TEIP: Limanowa Press 08 June 29th July 19 th The First Days of Camp By: Beata Malinowska Language camp in Limanowa started on the 29 th of June. Some of the young people came early in the morning, some in the evening, and some even at night or the next morning! The first day was full of new acquaintances, new friends, and generally new people. Everyone was very tired, so they went to sleep early. The second day of our camp was better. We had a good sleep so we were all happy. After breakfast, it was time for English lessons--at last! I asked some people what they felt. Marta Tyszkiewicz said that she was afraid of her first lesson, but once it started she was constantly smiling. Her English teachers appeared as polite and Why is it Important to Learn English? By: Norbert Alankiewicz Why learn English? There are many reasons to learn English! First, English is the most popular language in the world. It is used as an official language in many countries. If you know English, you can communicate everywhere. English is also used in many spheres of human life, for example, in business, marketing and to send information. happy people. On the other hand, Jagoda Mlynek said that she was curious about the lessons. Her curiosity was quickly fulfilled. However Ewelina Kilianwas excited. She couldn t wait for the first d ay of activities. She said that she enjoyed her lessons but especially liked playing volleyball as an afternoon activity. And what about me? I must think for a moment surely I was afraid a bit, but now I know that was unnecessary. Our lessons are great. I hope that these three weeks will be great: filled with new experiences and happy campers. Moreover, many employers want their workers to know English. So we should learn English to get an interesting and well paying job. As you have read, there are many reasons to learn English. I can t imagine my future without this language.

PAGE 2 OF A Few Words from the American Group Leader By: Mary Ann Kasper, Camp Director Photo Caption Text I believe this camp motivated the students to expand their horizons, not only for the three weeks of the camp, but also for the rest of their lives. -Mary Ann Kasper My name is Mary Ann Kasper and I have been the volunteer 2008 American Group Leader of the Limanowa site of the UNESCO English Language Immersion Camp. I have been participating in the TEIP program for five years because I am committed to spreading the magic that always happens as a result of the cultural exchange of the UNESCO English Language Immersion Camps. The Limanowa site was in a beautiful location of Poland. I was very impressed by the very positive and productive educational opportunity for the participants of this camp. One of our themes for this summer was: Celebrating Initiative, Determination, Adventure and Courage in honor of the first Poles who came to America 400 years ago and arrived at JAMESTOWN, VA in October, Also, in the latter half of the nineteenth century, a literary figure emerged and exemplified the same spirit of the Poles who dared to come to Jamestown. He was Joseph Conrad, or Jozef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski, as many of you would know him. Born 150 years ago of Polish parents, he became one of the greatest novelists of the English language. Conrad taught himself the English language but he did not speak English fluently until he was in his twenties. His life at sea was full of adventure. By reflecting on the experiences of the Polish Jamestown settlers, and Joseph Conrad, perhaps students have a broader view of themselves and the world. Throughout the camp, Polish students and American staff were able to get to know one and other and enjoyed many camp experiences together. I believe that this camp motivated students to expand their horizons, not only for the three weeks of the camp, but also for the rest of their lives. We not only made new friends, but we shared a magical life-changing experience.

PAGE 3 OF The Journey to Camp By: Monika Krzyzanowska People from our camp came here from all different regions of Poland. Here at camp, we can find inhabitants of the following regions: mazowieckie, małopolski, łodzkie, dolnośląskie, wielkopolskie, podkarpackie, podlaskie, zachodniopomorskie, lubelskie, and świętokrzyskie. I asked 20 people where they came from, how many hours they had to travel, and how many kilometers they drove. Natalia Chmiel from room 90 drove from her home in the region of zachodniopomorskie, which is situated in the north of Poland. She drove 600 kilometers and that took 14 hours. Natalia said, The journey was very tiring. I had to take a train and then I traveled by bus and I completely couldn t sleep. Though her journey was long, it did not break the record. Agnieszka Krzyzak and her brother Michał traveled the longest distance. She drove from Croatia, where she was staying with her parents. Her trip took a total of 27 hours. Whereas the longest journey took 27 hours, the shortest took only 5 minutes it s Magda and Marcin Krzak, who live in Limanowa. Everyday they come from their house to our school. As we have read, people from our camp came here from all different regions of Poland. Some of them have had to travel long distances just to have the opportunity to improve their English. I hope that they will succeed in their efforts. Whereas the longest journey took 27 hours, the shortest took only 5 minutes... A Mystery/Riddle By: Natalia Maśloch Someone who can t speak goes to a shop and wants to buy a toothbrush. He starts to show the shop assistant signs like he s brushing his teeth. The shop assistant knows what he wants and gives him a toothbrush. Now a question: Someone who is blind goes to the shop and wants to buy sunglasses. How can he show what he wants? The Mistress of the Haunted House (Amy Moyer) and her little helpers (Simon Madziara and Chris Długozima)

PAGE 4 OF The girls in Poland are just the best. - Marcin Gieraga If you could live in any American City By: Michalina Borula New York: Many people, like Weronika Chrapczyńska, Ewa Czeremuźyńska, Chris Długozima, and Aga Krzyiak would like to live in New York City. They say that in NYC, it would be easy to find a good job since it is such a big and popular city. Ewa thinks there would be a lot of things to do and many interesting people to meet. Aga has a friend who lives in the city and thinks it s the best city in the world. Chicago: If I could live in any American City, it would be Chicago. Magda Krzak agrees; she likes Chicago because it is a popular city and near to the lake. Simon Madziara also chose Chicago as the city he would like to live in. Las Vegas: A lot of people would like to live in beautiful Las Vegas because they like the lifestyle. The city is really dangerous though; the crime rate is high. Washington D.C.: Washington D.C. has a lot of beautiful monuments, says Mrs. Smith. She also adds that the city has energy. She finds this city appealing because of the many museums and because of how clean it is. Seattle: Aniela Januś wants to live in Seattle because the television show Grey s Anatomy is filmed there. Why Should Someone Visit Poland? First, one important part of Poland is its history. We have a very long and great history. Many monuments from the past have been preserved. In Poland there are also a lot of museums. Second, Poland has great physical features. There are many fields and woods where all kinds of animals live. In Poland there are also big lakes, rivers, and mountains. In addition, Poland has access to the sea. Moreover, the people in Poland are very friendly and many of them speak English! There are many famous people that come from Poland, for By: Jurek Knopik example, John Paul II, Lech Wałęsa, and Tadeusz Kosciuszko. Furthermore, the food in Poland is very tasty. Poland is also an interesting culture to learn about. In Poland, there is always so much to do. Marcin Gieraga agrees that Poland is a great place for travelers to visit and even said, The girls in Poland are just the best. I suppose that every traveler should visit Poland, because there are so many reasons. Poland is open to visitors and tourists.

PAGE 5 OF A Typical Day at Camp By: Kate Pytlarezyk At camp, we get up at 7:00 am and go to breakfast. Later, at 9:00 am, we go to the school for four hours to learn English. Next, we go to lunch at 1:00 pm. After lunch, we have afternoon activities. Before supper at 6:00pm, we get to go to our rooms for 30 minutes. After supper, we have evening activities, such as soccer and beauty shop. At 10:00 pm, we go to sleep. I like this camp because we have great teachers and friends. Do you feel Feel? By: Ewa Czeremuźyńska Nowadays Feel is the most popular Polish band. Teenagers are crazy about them. The band has five members: Piotr Kubicha, the band s leader, sings and plays guitar. They play pop music. The most popular songs are A gdy jest juz ciemno, Jak auiola glos, and Pokaz na co cie stac. They are playing many concerts all over Poland. This is a lucky year for them; the band has won loads of awards and sold thousands of records. I think music helps students to learn English because you have to look up new words in the dictionary and you are doing it without obligation. If you learn new words you can try to find sense in the lines of the song. It s a great way to learn because it is easy and painless. Others agree: Chris Długozima: Yes [music helps me learn English], because when we listen to music we are relaxed and can remember words effectively. Ania Paprocka: Yes [music Music and Learning By: Simon Madziara helps me learn English], because it is easier to study in this way. I like this type of learning. Dancing Pictured here: Marcin Gieraga and Sybila Morczyńska I like this type of learning Ania Paprocka

PAGE 6 OF Interview with Martyna Buczek By: Christopher Długozima and Pola Konkolewska I am happy to be here and help as much as I can. - Martyna Buczek Martyna Buczek is a beautiful girl from Brooklyn, NY. She is only 18 years old but she can speak Polish fluently. Her parents were born in Poland and they taught her Polish when she was very young. She visits Poland every summer with her family. Chris: What is it like to be the only fluent Polish-speaking American at camp? Martyna: It is of course a great experience. It s a little bit tough because I have to do a lot of translating and most of the time I am tempted to speak Polish to the Polish students. However, I am happy to be here and help as much as I can. C: Do you want to teach the American staff any Polish words? M: Yes, of course! I want to teach, and even though the American staff has to teach English, it is also helpful to know some Polish words. P: Oh! And what would you like to change at this camp? M: Hmmm. haha there is really nothing that I would change about this camp. However, I heard from the campers that they would like more discos, and I would also like to have that. C: How and when did you start learning Polish? M: Polish was actually my first language. My parents thought that it was necessary to learn their language first. C: How do you communicate with your neighbors and family--in English or in Polish? M: Since I know that most people in Greenpoint are from Poland, I speak to them in Polish. A lot of the stores in Greenpoint are Polish; therefore, everyone uses this language. Ultimate Frisbee P: I ve got a question about camp. What do you like about camp? M: First of all, I love the people at camp. Everyone here is so nice and friendly, and I m so happy that I had such a great opportunity to meet him or her. I also like the activities and how everyone is so eager to participate in them. Ultimate Frisbee By: Norbert Alankiewicz C: How do you continue to practice Polish in America? M: I have attended Polish school for 13 years and I am usually among Polish teenagers. I also have family and friends in Poland so I speak to them over the Internet or telephone. We have many interesting activities offered to us here at camp. Yesterday, on Wednesday, the 2 nd of July, I went to Ultimate Frisbee for my afternoon activity. I have never played Ultimate Frisbee before so I didn t know how to play the game. At the beginning, we learned about the rules. They turned out to be very simple. I think Ultimate Frisbee is similar to soccer; everything happens very fast and you have to run all over the field. After the rules were explained to us we got to play a match. It was really exciting! The kids all thought it was wonderful, and I liked Frisbee too.

PAGE 7 OF Dear Kasia & Tomek: An Advice Column 1. Kasia & Tomek, I fell in love with a local boy and we are here for 2 weeks what should I do? - Sad Sally A: Dear Sad Sally, You have to tell him how you feel! Take his address, e- mail, and telephone number. If your love is real, you will be in touch with him. True love will survive all troubles. Remember this. You have to have hope and faith and everything will be all right. When I first got the topic of this article the title was Campers Favorite Sports, but I changed it to Favorite Sports Other than Volleyball. Whenever I asked people what their favorite sport was, their answer was always volleyball. It s unbelievable, how many people love this sport. Here are the opinions of some people from the camp, but not about volleyball Magda Krzak s favorite sport is snowboarding, because she loves snow. Monika Krzyzanowska s favorite sport is scuba diving, because she likes the colorful sea and fish. Christopher Długozima is passionate about dancing, because it is a kind of entertainment. Ewa Czeremuźyńska s favorite sport is swimming, because she thinks it s a lot of fun. Michalina Borula s favorite sport is basketball, because it s relaxing for her. Allegra Czerwinski s favorite sport is skiing, because she has been skiing since she was 5 years 2. Dear Kasia & Tomek, I have a problem. The boys from the camp are annoying me all the time. They re acting like pigs and they and they poo in places they shouldn t! Please, help me! A: Kasia & Tomek think that you make problems bigger than they actually are. Think about it. If that doesn t help, go to the gynecologist. Favorite Sports Other Than Volleyball By: Beata Malinowska old. She says that when skiing, she is not afraid to make mistakes because the snow makes falling painless and fun. Mrs. Connie loves to go running. She is training to run in the New York City Marathon. My favorite sport is volleyball, and the exception to the title. I think it is very exciting and interesting. My favorite Polish player is Mariusz Wlazły. Natalia Chmiel likes to play cards because she thinks it s very exciting. She also thinks that playing card games creates rivalry. Aniela Januś loves to play pingpong. She has played it since she was five years old and thinks that this sport is extreme. Aga Krzyzak enjoys modern dancing, because it s great fun and it s a great way to meet people who are interested in dance. Marta Tyszlciewice s favorite sport is soccer because she thinks its fun to watch on T.V. Jagoda Młynek s favorite sport is skating, because she thinks it s beautiful. Did you know that Kasia and Tomek are actually the pen names of Kuba Sowa and Ines Godlewska?
