3 Students at Melbourne Campus WHO IS THIS GUIDE FOR? Pathways are all about options. There are many ways to and through university. This guide will help you find a pathway that suits you best. This guide is for anyone interested in applying to an undergraduate degree at La Trobe University, including those who have, or haven t, finished high school, TAFE students and mature-age applicants. It s also for people who want to transfer to La Trobe from another university, or even transfer courses within La Trobe. It is relevant to local applicants (Australian and New Zealand citizens, permanent residents of Australia, applicants in Australia with refugee status), and international applicants currently studying English, Foundation Studies, Year 12 or postsecondary studies in Australia. The best way to use this guide is in conjunction with our undergraduate course guides, which provide details on all our undergraduate courses, including costs, scholarships, industry experience, overseas study, accommodation and life at La Trobe in general. There are separate guides for local and international applicants. For a copy of the local Undergraduate Course Guide 2014, visit: latrobe.edu.au/study/course-guides For a copy of the International Undergraduate Guide 2014, visit: latrobe.edu.au/international/publications You ll also find course information online: latrobe.edu.au/courses Pathways Guide

4 PATHWAYS TO AND THROUGH LA TROBE You ve finished Year 12 and received the required ATAR If your course application is successful, VTAC will send you an Offer Letter with instructions on how to accept an offer and enrol. For more information, visit: latrobe.edu.au/students/new-students but did not receive the ATAR required for entry into your preferred course You may be eligible for credit if you: enrol in a La Trobe course your ATAR allows, then transfer to your original choice (see page 3) enrol in TAFE, then transfer to a La Trobe course (see pages 5-23) enrol in a single subject. This way you ll find out if a study area interests you while gaining credit towards a future application (see page 4) enrol in a diploma at La Trobe Melbourne and transfer into the second year of a La Trobe course (subject to results), see pages 4 and 18 for more information. and you d like to defer your start If you re offered a La Trobe course and want to defer your studies, you may be granted deferral for up to a year or more. Make sure you complete the deferral form so your place is waiting for you at the end of your deferral. Please note: although this pathway is available for most courses, there are a few exceptions. For more information, visit: latrobe.edu.au/students/new-students/ accept/defer Whether or not you ve finished Year 12 Don t worry if you haven t finished Year 12. You have options: Enrol at TAFE Doing a TAFE course may allow you to transfer to a La Trobe course with eligibility for credit. We have articulation agreements with many post-secondary institutions, so you know how much credit you ll get in advance (see pages 5-23). Use your work experience Apply for our Work Recognition Program, which takes your work experience into account instead of formal academic qualifications (see page 4). Enrol in a single subject or our Tertiary Enabling Program Enrol in a single subject. Doing a single subject at La Trobe allows you to find out if an area of study suits you. You may also gain credit for a future course application (see page 4). Apply for our Tertiary Enabling Program, which runs for 18 weeks and gives you a strong foundation of skills to help with your future course application (see page 4). Complete a Diploma at La Trobe Melbourne You can go directly into the second year of a La Trobe course by completing a diploma at La Trobe Melbourne subject to results (see pages 4 and 18 for more information). 2 Pathways Guide 2014

For more information, visit: latrobe.edu.au/school/apply/pathways/transfer Mature-age applicants You re unsure about which course to do We understand the need to balance life s commitments with study, so we offer flexible study options and plenty of support to mature-age students (21 years and older), including childcare facilities on or near most of our campuses. If you re not over 21, you can still apply it just means you re registered as a Non-Year 12 applicant. For different pathways into uni as a mature-age student see page 4 in this guide. For more information, visit: latrobe.edu.au/mature-age If you re unsure what you want to specialise in you can enrol in a general degree and specialise later. 6 pathways to and through La trobe Work Recognition Program Our Work Recognition Program (WRP) is the first of its kind in Victoria. It s designed to help students (21 years of age or older) enter university for the first time, whether or not you ve completed Year 12. It takes into account your work experience to date and you re not required to have any formal academic qualifications. All you need is a minimum of 12 months full-time paid employment since completing high school. The WRP is an alternative entry method to the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (see right). The program is available for admission into the following La Trobe courses: Bachelor of Arts Bachelor of Social Sciences. LA TROBE MELBOURNE AND ACN IN SYDNEY You can go directly into the second year of your La Trobe course by completing a diploma at La Trobe Melbourne (subject to results). Operated by Navitas and based on our Melbourne Campus, La Trobe Melbourne offers five diplomas that get you into a range of our courses in science, business, health sciences, IT, and media and communication, provided you meet entry requirements. Navitas also offers La Trobe University business courses through ACN in Sydney. You ll study in Sydney s CBD and graduate with a La Trobe University degree. For a full list of courses and more information about La Trobe Melbourne please see page 18 and visit: latrobemelbourne.edu.au For more information about ACN in Sydney, please visit: acn.navitas.com You can apply for the WRP if you: are 21 years of age or older on 1 January of the year you intend to start tertiary study have a minimum of 12 months full-time paid employment since completing high school. For more information, see: latrobe.edu.au/mature-age/apply/matureage-special-entry/work-recognition Tertiary Enabling Program * If you re keen to study but not sure where to start, our Tertiary Enabling Program (TEP) will help you develop the academic skills and confidence you need to get going. The program is offered in Albury-Wodonga, Bendigo, Mildura, Shepparton and Broadmeadows in partnership with local TAFEs. You ll complete four subjects as part of the TEP: Introduction to Social Science Introduction to Adult Learning Introduction to Maths Introduction to Science. You may be accepted into one of these courses once you ve completed the TEP: (Accounting) Diploma in Business Bachelor of Education Bachelor of Early Childhood Education Bachelor of Physical and Health Education Bachelor of Physical and Outdoor Education Bachelor of Outdoor Recreation Education Bachelor of Health Sciences Bachelor of Nursing Bachelor of Human Services and Master of Social Work Bachelor of Arts Bachelor of Social Sciences. If you meet the entry requirements for these degrees, you won t need to sit the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (see right for more information). Courses are only available on certain campuses. For more information about TEP requirements and campuses, visit: latrobe.edu.au/mature-age/choosela-trobe/help-to-get-in/tertiary-enablingprogram Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) * The STAT is an aptitude test. La Trobe only accepts the Multiple Choice version of the STAT, which consists of 70 questions designed to assess a range of competencies considered important for success in tertiary study. You ll have to sit the STAT if you don t have an academic record (VCE/HSC or equivalent) and you re applying through our Mature-Age Special Entry Scheme (apart from our Work Recognition Program). Our Work Recognition Program (see left) is an alternative to the STAT. You might choose to sit the STAT even if you have an academic record. Some people do this to supplement their application. Everyone is different, so we strongly encourage you to speak with a selection officer before you decide. We also offer STAT preparatory courses at some of our campuses. You register to sit a STAT through VTAC or UAC. Contact our Future Students Centre for more information: T latrobe.edu.au/study For an information booklet and sample questions you can buy online, visit: acer.edu.au/tests/stat Single subjects * Enrolling in single subjects is a great way to find out whether a particular area of study is right for you, and it can also boost your confidence for further uni studies. While completion of single subjects doesn t guarantee admission into an undergraduate course you ll still be required to apply separately for an undergraduate degree a strong performance can help your application. You may also be eligible to receive credit (Advanced Standing) for the subject/s you successfully complete. You may choose this pathway to enhance your qualifications if you re working and don t plan to enrol in a course. For more information, visit: latrobe.edu.au/mature-age/apply/pathways * Not available for international students. 4 Pathways Guide 2014

For more information, visit: latrobe.edu.au/study questions? Local applicants: Future Students Centre T International applicants: La Trobe International T Mid-year entry To apply for mid-year entry, visit our mid-year entry webpage for key dates and a link to our online application. Applications usually open in March and close in late July. Please note: not all courses offer mid-year entry. Find out more at: latrobe.edu.au/courses Local applicants Local applicants seeking entry in first semester (February 2014) should apply online through VTAC or UAC. Their websites will guide you through the application process and let you know about the information you need to provide. Applications for 2014 open at 9 am on Monday 5 August 2013 and close at 5 pm on Friday 27 September Late applications are accepted until early December each year, but conditions and fees usually apply. See the relevant website for key dates. Victorian applicants: vtac.edu.au Interstate applicants applying to Albury-Wodonga and Mildura Campuses: uac.edu.au VTAC Personal Statement You'll need to complete and submit a VTAC Personal Statement if you wish other information to be considered during the selection process. This may include information such as work experience or reason for applying. You may wish to provide other documentation in support of your application. Special Entry Access Scheme (SEAS) There are six categories of special entry programs to help you gain entry to La Trobe if you have experienced educational disadvantage or circumstances demonstrated to have had a negative impact on your Year 12 studies: Category 1: Personal information and location (includes Mature-Age Special Entry) Category 2: Non-English speaking background Category 3: Difficult circumstances Category 4: Disadvantaged financial background Category 5: Disability or medical condition Category 6: SALT (Schools Access La Trobe). For more information, visit: Victoria: latrobe.edu.au/school/apply/special-entry/ victorian-applicants NSW: latrobe.edu.au/school/apply/special-entry/ nsw-applicants International applicants International applicants can read about application procedures, download an international undergraduate application form or apply online at: latrobe.edu.au/international/apply There are usually no deadlines for international applicants seeking entry in If a course has a closing date for applications, it will be specified in the course description at: latrobe.edu.au/courses Please note: some courses have limited places and are subject to a quota, so apply as early as you can. If you haven t yet finished your post-secondary studies, La Trobe may make you a conditional offer subject to completion with a specific grade point average. We strongly advise you check the La Trobe International website for further important information about the application process, including provision of academic qualifications and results, student visas, English-language requirements, refund policies and other key details. For more information on the application process, please contact La Trobe International: T Selection Selection for most courses is based on your academic achievement. In some cases, La Trobe also considers other factors or requirements for specific courses. These might include a folio or interview. It s important to note entry is competitive, so you re not necessarily guaranteed a place in your chosen course on the basis of meeting academic requirements or having done post-secondary studies. This is another reason why it s a good idea to get as much information as you can about your chosen course before you apply. 26 Pathways Guide 2014

29 COSTS, FEES AND SCHOLARSHIPS Local students All undergraduate courses at La Trobe are subsidised by the Australian Government through Commonwealth Supported Places (CSPs), which means the government subsides the cost of your course and you pay a student contribution. You can pay your student contribution upfront annually or take out a government loan through the government s HECS-HELP scheme to help you manage the cost. You don t need to start repaying the loan until you re earning a salary nominated by the government and indexed annually. Your student contribution depends on the discipline you study and the individual subjects you take. In 2013, the annual contribution rates varied from $5,868 to $9,792. To find out the cost of your chosen course, and other university costs, visit: latrobe.edu.au/students/fees Students on campus Scholarships To help with university costs, La Trobe offers many scholarships to undergraduate students, in different categories and with different aims and eligibility criteria. Some scholarships are designed to support students experiencing financial hardship, and others recognise outstanding academic achievement. Check our Scholarships Guide 2014 for information about scholarships at La Trobe, or visit: latrobe.edu.au/scholarships International students International students pay tuition fees in advance each semester. These fees are subject to an annual adjustment: fees generally rise by no more than seven per cent per annum. Tuition fees for individual La Trobe courses are online. Each fee is based on the standard annual credit-point load for the course. The usual annual load is 120 credit points, based on subjects worth 15 credit points each. Read more at: latrobe.edu.au/international/fees/tuition High-achieving international students, or those from developing priority areas, may be eligible to apply for a scholarship to help with the costs of their studies.
