2 Why Ann Arbor? Ann Arbor s IT sector has seen rapid growth over the past decade. We ve always been an innovator in the IT industry. The University of Michigan was part of the ARPANET research effort that was the forerunner of today s Internet. Since then, the IT/software sector continued to evolve and grow. Today the sector includes 300 plus firms and employs 6,700 people. Demographics The Ann Arbor MSA boasts a young and well-educated population. An Educational Powerhouse In the 2013 fiscal year, U-M research spending grew by 9.5 percent to an all-time record of $1.33 billion putting Michigan in the #1 spot nationally for research funding at public universities. Of that record-breaking amount, more than $4 million was dedicated to research in the field of information.
6 TALENT ENHANCEMENT Ann Arbor SPARK, Washtenaw County - Employment Training & Community Services, and Michigan Works! combine together to provide an extensive talent package for regional attraction companies. The Talent Team works with a staff of recruiting professionals that help hundreds of companies per year and help place thousands of employees each year in the region. The following programs are customized to a specific company s need and are designed to attract, train and retain key talent that will help drive business success in the Ann Arbor region. Talent Partnership: Team Talent works closely with the management team to plan and implement a talent program that will meet specific needs in terms of high quality talent acquisition. We will integrate the following programs into existing company HR efforts and recruiting processes to ensure seamless support. Talent Identification: Team Talent will use the following tools to identify potential candidates: Post positions on the Michigan Talent Bank, Ann Arbor SPARK website, Craigslist, e-washtenaw and through University Alumni websites Search the Michigan Talent Bank, a database of thousands of qualified candidates, and screen potential candidates Feature opportunities in the Ann Arbor SPARK weekly talent newsletter Selective networking through Linked-In, My Space and Facebook Host senior level, invitation-only career networking events Connections to Michigan college and university placement offices for on-campus interviewing and promotions, as well as a feature in communications to all college placement offices and on our College Connections web portal for college students Talent Screening: Team Talent will screen candidates based on your specifications and will work with you to include your postings in Job Fit, which is a system to benchmark your top performers, and then find people with an appropriate background and personality profile. Talent Portal Ann Arbor USA offers IT/software companies a multitude of access points to talent. One of the most popular is the Talent Portal - a free online job posting system that spotlights executive and knowledge-based positions as well as internships and positions for new college graduates. In 2010, more than 400 companies posted over 1,300 jobs to the Talent Portal. Of those companies, 41 percent hired at least one new employee identified through the portal.
