(Nursing) Curriculum Vitae Contact Information , Ext (work) (fax) Work Professional Employment 2013 Current Clinical Ethicist The role of the Clinical Ethicist is to act as a resource to the HHS community (including staff, leaders, physicians, learners, patients and families) to enhance patient care, staff worklife and advance the strategic goals of HHS. In this role, the Clinical Ethicist: educates stakeholders about healthcare ethics facilitates ethical analysis, conflict resolution and decision-making advocates for ethical practices and processes develops systems, resources and research to enhance the integration of ethics in healthcare collaborates to enhance ethical practice across all clinical programs and populations in the hospital The Clinical Ethicist is accountable for: Developing and implementing an effective clinical ethics program that meets emerging standards and is continuously engaged in reflection and quality improvement Advancing the field of bioethics through professional service, original research and knowledge translation activities Acting as a project manager to develop systems and resources within HHS to enhance the quality of end-of-life care and support ethical care of the dying across the hospital Supporting other ethics-related projects/initiatives, as required Neonatal Nurse Practitioner McMaster Children s Hospital 1

2 Principle role is to provide comprehensive, holistic, family-centred care to neonatal clients, in acute care settings, through the use of advanced skills, knowledge and education in health assessment, diagnoses and management, as well as health promotion and disease prevention. Enacts the plan of care in accordance with scope of practice as outlined by the College of Nurses (CNO) and hospital policy and utilizes medical directives and delegated medical acts, as required in order to facilitate this plan of care. The specific components of the skills, knowledge and abilities are: health assessment and diagnosis, health care management and therapeutic interventions; health promotion and prevention of illness. The Neonatal NP role encompasses the core competencies of advanced nursing practice: clinical practice; research; education; leadership; and collaboration / consultation / referral. NP practice is characterized by the simultaneous blending and utilization of these competencies at a level of complexity that reflects the NP's critical thinking skills, clinical nursing experience and advanced education that supports their clinical practice components. Cross appointment with McMaster University as Assistant Professor in the School of Nursing Present Clinical Ethics Consultant Hamilton Health Sciences Ethics Mediation: A formal and structured mediation process co-facilitated by two ethics consultants, following standard policies and procedures of the Ethics Consultation Service. Ethics Case Debriefing: A case review focusing on exploring the experience of the interdisciplinary team regarding a difficult patient care situation. Ethics Education: Provision of formal or informal education to a group of health care professionals regarding the ethical dimensions of a particular topic, issue or case. Ethics Coaching: Coaching is non-directive support in that it is founded on the premise that individuals are capable of solving their own problems with appropriate support and information. Quality improvement: methods of quality improvement include: (1) reflective analysis and debriefing of cases with ethics consultation team members; (2) continuing education; (3) tracking and recording ethics consultation activities in the ethics consultation service database; (4) evaluation of the ethics consultation services by users. 3 The responsibilities of this role were to support and actively participate in the work of the clinical ethics consultation service, clinical ethics committee, clinical ethics policy working group, and clinical ethics education working group Present Ontario STABLE Program Outreach Education Instructor Ontario STABLE Program co-owner Burlington, Ontario S.T.A.B.L.E. Program Lead Instructor An education program that focuses exclusively on the post-resuscitation/pre-transport stabilization care of sick infants. The mnemonic S.T.A.B.L.E. stands for the six assessment and care modules in the program: Sugar, Temperature, Airway, Blood pressure, Lab work, and Emotional support. A seventh module, Quality Improvement stresses the professional responsibility of improving and evaluating care provided to sick infants. Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Lead Instructor - An educational program that introduces the concepts and skills of neonatal resuscitation. It is designed to teach individuals and teams who may be required to resuscitate newborn babies Education and Development Clinician, Neonatal Nurseries McMaster Hospital Supports the staff in the Neonatal Nurseries with their ongoing educational needs. Involved in corporate and local initiatives that support patient safety and quality improvement. Plans, organizes and facilitates annual review, new staff orientation and student placements Neonatal Intensive Care Nurse McMaster Hospital Collaborates with multi-disciplinary team to assess, plan and implement interventions for direct patient care of the compromised critically ill newborn Upholds the principles of family centred care and support of families. Supports peers, students and new staff learning needs at the bedside. Member of the Neonatal Transport Team responsible for the transfer of critically ill newborns from regional facilities to a tertiary centre for further management and care. Member of the Admission team responsible for attending at risk or high risk deliveries. 3
