In 1988 I was given a fresh aloe vera leaf by a neighbour in Spain and told to apply the cool aloe vera gel to my skin. At the time I was suffering from a number of skin problems: alternating periods of inflammation, extreme dryness and severe redness. Subsequent treatment with the leaf gel changed everything my skin and my plans for the future. Just one year later, Manolo, our first employee, planted 3,000 baby aloe vera plants in the sandy soil of our finca (agricultural land) in Andalusia. This was the foundation on which my husband and I built Santaverde, with the intention of making the wonderful effects of this ancient medicinal plant accessible to other people. My personal experience and our own certified organic cultivation gave rise to the unique Santaverde formulation principle which encompasses the full power of the freshly harvested plant and which we will present in more detail on page 11. The secret is a concentrated formulation of active ingredients from pure aloe vera juice, supplemented by valuable plant oils and extracts. The pure juice from the core of the leaves, aloe vera gel, is a powerful active ingredient complex for the skin and the entire body. 7 Where we grow our aloe vera The climate in Andalusia is ideal for the growth of aloe vera plants, which have a wealth of active ingredients generally unknown to the world market. It s not just a question of climate, though, it s also down to working by hand. In the first two years, the aloe vera plant needs its own active ingredients for growth. 12

8 Where we grow our aloe vera Where we grow our aloe vera On the Finca Verde, it s down to us All year round, everything on our finca (agri cultural land) in Estepona revolves around our valuable raw material, aloe vera. Cultivation of the fields follows the guidelines for certified organic cultivation, and the plants are cared for throughout the year exclusively by hand. Harvesting begins after the sunniest months of July and August. All mature plant leaves in the fields are removed from the mother plant. To do this, every single leaf is carefully scored at the base and pulled off the stalk by hand without damaging the mother plant. The freshly harvested leaves are taken directly for further processing on the finca. Today, around 20,000 aloe plants grow on our fields, covering two hectares 14 15

9 Where we grow our aloe vera Where we grow our aloe vera A production laboratory surrounded by fields We guarantee the quality of our valuable aloe vera gel, the main component of all Santaverde products, by processing entirely by hand. We believe that to ensure the naturalness and richness of the active ingredients, machines are no replacement for the human hand and eye. The freshly harvested leaves are taken for further processing in our modern laboratory in the middle of the finca. This guarantees the exceptional freshness of our raw material. First, the leaves are cleaned of soil residue and washed carefully. After the thorny leaf edges and the hard exterior casing have been removed, the soft interior leaf fillet can be extracted. Finally, the transparent gel fillets are selected according to quality and purity. Careful removal of the leaf fillet from the exterior is essential to quality. In the hills of Estepona, you can find out about organic cultivation, harvesting and processing of the medicinal plant, aloe vera. During the harvest period from September to January, as well as in May and June, you can watch through the glass walls of the laboratory as the aloe vera gel, which is so rich in active ingredients, is carefully extracted. The concept underlying our product formulations aims to incorporate as many regionally sourced raw materials as possible: from certified organic cultivation, wild harvesting and fair trade. This means our purchasing policy works hand in hand with the projects behind our raw materials. Our certified organic cultivation of aloe vera on our own fields in southern Spain means we can avoid long transport routes. Harvesting and processing take place on site and are performed carefully by hand. We can therefore guarantee the highest purity and quality of our main raw material, save energy, protect the environment and create more jobs than an automated production facility. 14 Certified quality Certified quality Pure natural cosmetics All our formulations consist of pure, valuable plant juices and oils, delicate hydrolates and nutritious plant extracts. We reject the use of chemical-synthetic fragrances, colourings and preservatives, mineral oils or parabens. As a guarantee of this, all Santaverde skin care products bear the NATRUE label, a sign of quality for certified natural cosmetics ( The internationally recognised label sets out very strict quality standards for ingredients and production methods to be fulfilled by all certified products. Animal protection Within the EU, all cosmetics and raw materials tested on animals, and the sale of these, have been prohibited by law. This does not apply, however, outside the EU. The Leaping Bunny Seal ( on all Santaverde products is a globally recognised seal of approval for cruelty-free cosmetics. The seal is also effective in preventing animal testing of individual raw materials and finished products worldwide. What s more, all Santaverde products are 100% vegan. Certified organic cultivation Claudio Itcou has been working as a foreman at the finca for six years The 100% pure aloe vera juice, aloepur, and the majority of the raw materials used in our cosmetics bear the EU Bio seal which is based on the EC Eco Directives Nos. 834/2007 and 889/2008. The Bio seal is the recognised symbol across Europe for products from organic cultivation. This prohibits the application of genetic engineering and mineral nitrogen fertilizer, stipulates species-appropriate keeping of animals, reduction of energy consumption and conservation of reserves of raw materials

16 The power of aloe vera The power of aloe vera Quality criteria The moisturising, regenerating and healing power of aloe vera has been a part of popular medicine for centuries. The secret of its effect lies in the holistic interaction of over 200 different vital substances, such as vitamins, minerals and amino acids. A measure of its quality is its aloverose content. This unique molecule is contained only in the gel of the Aloe vera barbadensis Miller plant. The higher the aloverose content, the higher the proportion of powerful vital substances and the more intensive the effect on the skin. The particularly high aloverose content of our plants is due to the microclimate of Andalusia and the fact that our cultivation and processing methods are kept as natural as possible. Why is the climate in Andalusia ideal? Series of tests have demonstrated that aloe vera from Andalusia has a particularly high aloverose content. Thanks to the annual temperature differences between summer and winter, the plants are exposed to positive stress stimuli. These induce them to store more essential ingredients than would be necessary, say, in tropical cultivation areas. Why do we process the aloe vera by hand? The aloe vera gel inside the hard exterior casing of the leaves is where the plant s active ingredients are stored. We extract the valuable gel by hand a very complex method, but one which preserves all active ingredients of the freshly harvested plant. It is only in this way that we can avoid having to filter out parts of the leaf casing in subsequent processing steps, thereby damaging important active ingredients or losing them completely. Why do we cultivate the aloe vera according to certified organic guidelines? Organic cultivation means we can allow the plant its natural growth period. As a result, it can enrich its valuable active ingredients over a number of years. We avoid enhancing growth by the use of synthetic fertilizers, since this encourages the plant to quickly take up large quantities of water. Of course, this would lead to bigger harvests, but the proportion of active ingredients to water content would decrease rapidly. Why do we use the pure leaf juice? The use of pure aloe vera juice in a product formulation is considerably more complex and expensive than taking dried aloe vera powder and adding water to liquefy it again. The drying process used to produce the powder can damage sensitive ingredients or destroy their holistic correlation. The full effect of aloe vera can only be achieved by using the pure juice
