Recent updates and discoveries (unplanned data sources) in the SW06 data Arthur Newhall, Ying-Tsong Lin, Jim Lynch, Tim Duda Reminder on data and availability Studies from unplanned data sources
SW06 website (new additions) Place to go for data and information Still password protected, still maintained Contains data links to data contacts to get data documentation general information/notices SW06 specific presentations and general publications Data, links, contacts include Acoustic data (contact for 5 SHRUS, WHOI vla/hla, ARL/UT arrays) Mooring data/info (all WHOI PO mooring data, 45+ moorings) tides currents, ADCP data temperature, salinity, pressure All ship's ctd and xbt casts All shipboard data (seasurface temperature, speed, heading, location, etc) charts, spreadsheets,... Transmission schedules, Internal wave activity timeline (oceanus, sharp) contacts for data scanfish bathymetry satelite images WaMoS radar images (Knorr/Oceanus) Skymaster (airplane) surface radar images Full water column temperature, salinity, and sound speed profiles at Shark hla/vla (more later) Photos - small set of general SW06 photos Images - Oceanus Magazine cartoon (next slide)
SW06 website (continued) Presentations: SW06 presentations at the ASA Conference in Paris (Jun29-Jul5, 2008). SW06 presentations at the ASA Conference in Miami (Nov 10-14, 2008). General publications: Oceanus Magazine SW06 article (Oceanus, Vol. 45, No. 3, July 2007). Oceanography Magazine SW06 article (Oceanography,Vol. 20, No. 4, December 2007). JASA-EL SW06 Special Issue (JASA-EL, Vol 124, Issue 3, September, 2008) SW06 WHOI Data and mooring report Notices/general information publication target dates Links to APL/UW NLIWI site password protected Contain other information not on WHOI site If there is Anything you want included Anything missing Anything corrected Please let me know Image from Oceanus Magazine, WHOI
WHOI VLA/HLA mooring motion/tilt 3 transponder system for LBL system for VLA and HLA VLA tilt, HLA hydrophone placement Student Alexey Shmelev thesis chapter Important for array processing HLA before (left) and after (rt) Aug 19 th event Top of VLA - Channel 1 motion
WHOI VLA/HLA data processing All m-seq data pulse compressed to get arrival structure WHOI 224Hz, WHOI 400Hz, MSM100Hz, MSM 200Hz, MSM 800Hz, MSM1600Hz Linear frequency modulated data matched field filtered LFM 300Hz and LFM 500Hz All shark 48 hydrophones and 5 SHRUs All receptions (2+ months) Intensity fluctuations, signal coherence studies 100Hz, 224Hz, 300Hz, 400Hz, 500Hz signals from SHRU MSM 100Hz pulse compressed
WHOI VLA/HLA data processing (cont) All data also mode filtered (up to 500Hz) WHOI sources, MSM sources, LFM sources Calculated normal modes at the VLA location available for entire data set Study modal intensity fluctuations (Duda talk), coherence, 100Hz Mode filtering
WHOI VLA/HLA Sound Speed Estimation Temperature data on VLA from 80m (bottom) to 13.5 meters (top of mooring) Surface temperature sensor lost during tropical storms Created Entire Sound Speed Profile ASIS mooring Nearby SW34 PO Mooring HOPS model prediction Submitted IEEE JOE (Lin, Newhall, Duda, Lermusiaux) using SW34, ASIS With HOPS model T/S from SW34 Surface temp from ASIS/HOPS Merged using Temperature OEFs T/S relationship models predictons Necessary for accurate acoustic modeling. Shark VLA
Unexpected data sources Many "sources of opportunity" available Many "unplanned areas of study" A few follow in the next slides
SW39 'Bottom Lander' before battery pack explosion On Aug 2, 2007 at 23:04:56 hours (GMT), a lithium battery pack short caused a massive gas leak which resulted in blowing both endcaps off the battery pressure case of a moored Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP). The explosion was heard on (and overloaded) all the SW06 hydrophone receivers. The furthest one from the explosion was SW49 (a single hydrophone receiver) at a distance of over 40 km away. If time later, will show ROV recovery movie. Lithium battery pack
Spectrogram of acoustic 'source of opportunity' reception at SW49 of ADCP explosion Broadband signal Used for bottom inversion Lowest freq head wave (through bottom) arrives first, then direct acoustic path, followed by multipaths (reverb). The other frequecies are from other SW06 sources.
Original Sei Whale signal at ch8 on WHOI VLA Very little known about Sei Whale vocalizations Receptions for only 2 days Sep at very end of expt.
Mode filtering on VLA Mode 1 Mode 2 Goal: Use mode dispersion properties to back propagate to create/model original source signature Approach: Enough bandwidth for acoustics normal mode analysis Beamform using HLA Mode filter using VLA Mode 3 Sei whale signal with mode 1 and mode 2 overlayed on signal from Channel 3 on Sept 13
Fin Whale Vocalizations Laso have Fin Whale vocalizations Better studied in literature 3 separate animals below Q: are the different signatures considered communication? Audio sped up 5 times Vocalizations well-studied HLA beamformed and tracked Audio sped up 10 times
What we have now Rich data set Novel studies still available Get information online What's next Data available Cooperation encouraged Possible SW06 collaboration with WHOI/RPI ocean informatics initiative NSF funded Develop new data fusion and visualization tools They are interested in working with us and the SW06 data set.
If time, a movie
SW39 Movie The SW39 mooring release jammed so the bottom-mounted mooring had to be recovered with the aid of an ROV which made a video of its approach to the mooring (next slide). The explosion audio was over-laid onto the video. Notice the after-effect (reverb) of the audio portion of the explosion on the video. It was almost musical perhaps even a little scary.
