Chapter I Background

Using Bibble 5 Background What is Bibble 5? Bibble 5 is a fast, flexible photographic workflow application. Bibble 5 is designed to help you optimize your digital photographic images and to help you organize and catalog those images. It allows you to adjust and optimize your images very quickly, and to batch adjust and convert these images to prints, send via , share on the web or edit or view in other applications. Bibble 5 provides three major categories of features: Asset Management, Image Editing, and Output Generation. Asset Management is the means to catalog your digital photographic assets (called Master Files), view and add metadata to these assets, and search and browse based on that metadata. As your volume of digital photographs grows from hundreds to thousands of images, maintaining a coherent and organized library of those photographs becomes quite critical. Bibble 5 provides all the tools needed to catalog your current photographs, to search and to browse through those catalogs quickly and efficiently. Image Adjustment & Optimizing is the process of applying color management and correction, exposure adjustment, and other creative image editing tools to your original photographs, enabling you to optimize your photographs in the least amount of time. Bibble 5 offers image adjustment tools that operate on entire images (like exposure compensation or white balance) and also offers Selective Editing to allow you to adjust regions or smaller portions of your images. Output Generation will take the previews you see in Bibble and create new image files that you can print, share on the web, and access in other applications. Bibble 5's powerful Batch Conversion system helps automate this process. What can Bibble 5 do? Bibble 5 can help organize your photographic catalog, importing images and assigning keywords and other metadata to your images to help you quickly find the images you are looking for. Bibble 5 can improve your images, optimizing exposure and color, white balance and detail, lower digital noise or sensor imperfections, remove optical distortion or many, many other things. Bibble 5 can prepare your files in many formats for optimized output, for many different output rendering intents. 8

Background What is Photographic Workflow? Photographic Workflow refers to all the activities that occur between the initial image capture and the final destination of your photograph. Photographers have very different workflows, depending on the volume of shooting they do and what the photographs will be used for. Your workflow might be as simple as downloading images from your camera's memory card and printing them on a printer attached to your computer. Or, it may include the addition of keywords and star ratings to search and sort your images, image adjustments and corrections, backup and archiving, printing locally and sharing your photography on the web or sending your files to printing service bureaus or pre-press facilities for final printing. Bibble 5 supports a wide range of workflow options and working styles to ensure that you can get the best quality from your photographs in the least amount of time. 9

Using Bibble Introduction This guide introduces key concepts of Bibble 5 Pro, and explains each feature and tool within the application. Quick Start Guide Just want to get started right way? This brief chapter will show you how. Bibble 5 Interface Introduces key concepts of Bibble 5, hardware and software requirements, supported image formats, and other background information. About the Library How to get images into Bibble, and various options associated with the Library and Cataloging images. Editing Images Working with images and Bibble 5's editing tools, ensuring you get the best image quality from every exposure. Output Images Applying image adjustments, and getting files out of Bibble. Organizing, Keywords, and Metadata Using Keywords and other Metadata to help organize your image catalog, so you can find your images quickly. Versions, Stacks, and Views Working with multiple versions of a single image file, stacking similar images to reduce clutter, and working with Bibble 5's views. Adjusting the Interface and Application Preferences Adapt Bibble 5 to conform to your working style instead of changing how you work. 10

Background 1.2 Getting Started This section will introduce the key concepts of Bibble 5 and get you stared quickly. The general process of working in Bibble follows the following steps: 1. Select a folder containing images you want to edit. This can be an existing folder on your computer, a Bibble 5 Catalog folder, or a search or metadata folder. 2. Select one or more images to edit. 3. Make the adjustments you want to optimize your photo 4. Export the images using a Batch Output or with the File -> Save Image As... menu option The Thumbnail Panel shows all the supported images for the container that is selected in the Browse Panel. So the first step is to select a Folder that contains the images you want to get started with. Step One: Selecting a Folder Images are stored either on your computer in a folder, or within your Bibble 5 Catalog, or both. You can find your images by using the Catalog or File System Tabs in the Browse Panel. Simply click through the folders in your Catalog, or use the Search or Browse tools to find the images you want to work with. Clicking on a Folder name will load thumbnails for all the Versions in that folder into the Thumbnail Panel. Select the File System Tab Select the folder that contains your image files Step Two: Selecting Versions To view or adjust images in Bibble 5, you need to select them first. The selected Versions will appear in the Preview Panel, where you can view and edit your images. Select A Version to View or Edit The Thumbnail Panel in Bibble 5 will show thumbnails for all the Versions in the folder you have selected. Click on a thumbnail to display a larger view of that Version in the Preview Panel. The adjustment tools will change to the settings for that Version, and adjusting the tools will change the settings on that Version. Select the thumbnail you want to work on Selecting Many Versions You can also select more than one Version, to work on several Versions at once, or to compare and select the best image out of many similar images. 11

Using Bibble 5 To Preview several images, simply select several thumbnails in the Thumbnail Panel. There are several ways to select several images: Hold down the CTRL key (Command key on Mac's) while clicking thumbnails. Each thumbnail you CTRL +Click (or Command+Click) will be added to the selection and will be added to the Preview Panel. Hold down the SHIFT key, then click two thumbnails. All thumbnails between the two thumbnails you clicked will be added to the selection. The last image you select is called the "Active" image - this is the image that is shown in the Preview Panel, and this image's settings will appear in the Tools Panel. Making changes to the image adjustment tools will apply these new settings to the Active image and will update the preview window to show the results of your changes. You can preview many Versions at once by clicking on the Single/Multi View toggle button. The Preview Panel will adjust the size and layout of all the preview images, allowing you to quickly compare and view many Versions at once. This is very useful in selecting between several Versions that are similar, or comparing multiple Versions of the same image. While in Multi-Image mode, metadata adjustments like ratings and keywords, as well as pasting settings, and deleting versions will apply only to the single Active Image. Step three: Editing in Bibble 5 Editing images in Bibble is easy: just click and drag any of the image adjustment tools in the Tool Panel and the 'Active' image will be adjusted according to the changes you make. Start making image adjustments You can undo any change you make by pressing CRTL+Z (Command+Z on a Mac), or selecting Edit -> Undo, and redo adjustments using CTRL+Y or Edit -> Redo. The adjustments you make to your images are automatically saved, so your can proceed from image to image quickly without needing to stop and save your changes as you go. See the Chapter on Editing Images to learn the details of the many image editing tools available in Bibble 5. Step Four: Exporting Images Once your images look great, you'll need to Output them before you can share your work on the web, over , or before you edit the images further in other applications. Use the Output Tab on the Browser Panel to export one or more images. Or, if you just want to quickly make JPEG images from the versions you've been working on in Bibble, just select the images you want to Export, and press 'F'. That will send all the selected images to the Full Size JPEG Output Batch. The Chapter on Creating Output Images goes into more detail on this topic. Moving On Now that you have mastered the basics, you can move on to more advanced topics, like: Building a Library or Working from the File System 12

There are many more ways to optimize and customize the Bibble 5 interface. These will be discussed in greater detail in a later section. 18

Background 1.5 Understanding Image Editing Bibble 5 is a non-destructive image editor, meaning that adjustments you make to your images in Bibble 5 will never alter the data in the original image. You are free to experiment and alter your images as much as you want, knowing that you can always revert to the original version. As a non-destructive image editor, the adjustments you create are stored either in an "sidecar" XMP file, within the Bibble 5 catalog file, or both. As such, you will need to create an output image using Bibble 5's Output Batch tools or File -> Save As menu options to allow your image adjustments to be visible to other applications. When you edit a photograph in Bibble 5, a new Version is created that contains the adjustments you've made. Bibble allows more than one set of image adjustments to be made on a single photograph, allowing you to efficiently make many versions of a single image. Creating a new version does not make a copy of the original Master File, but rather just allows you to apply different image adjustment and metadata to the same Master Image. Image files that are opened and edited within Bibble 5 are called Master Files. Bibble 5's XMP Files Bibble 5 stores its settings in an XMP file that is slightly different that other popular image editors and Asset Management applications. We do this to prevent Bibble from overwriting settings created by other applications and to circumvent limitations inherent in the current XMP standard (such as only being able to export the metadata from one Version at a time, or the inability to save different settings for a RAW file and a JPEG that were created in camera as a RAW+JPEG pair). Bibble 5 uses a similar, but slightly different filename to store this enhanced XMP data. The XMP filename is created by simply adding ".xmp" to the end of the complete filename for the image file it describes (while many other applications build the XMP filename by first dropping the image file extension (like "jpg", "nef" or "cr2") before adding "xmp"). So a Bibble 5 XMP file would look like img_0000.jpg.xmp while an XMP from other applications for the same image would simply be img_0000.xmp. Bibble 5 will allow you to create a "standard" XMP file that other applications will read - but this will of course limit the settings that the other applications see to those officially supported by the XMP standard (one set of metadata per image file). Shared XMP Data Other applications store image adjustments in sidecar XMP files, and metadata added in other applications can be imported into Bibble 5. These include: 0- to 5-Star Rating Image Color Labels Tags (called 'Picks' or 'Selects' in other applications) Categories and Keywords IPTC & EXIF Data Likewise, applying any of these settings to images in Bibble will write this data back to the XMP file for those images. Many applications allow you "sync" settings from XMP files with the settings they hold in their internal databases. Once this "sync" process is complete, adjustments made in Bibble will appear in those applications as well. See the section on Keywording & Metadata for additional information. XMP Data Exclusive to Bibble 5 Settings from image editing tools within Bibble and other applications are also stored within XMP files; however, these settings are not shared amongst applications from different manufacturers. This is due to the technical differences in implementing various image adjustment tools. These differences in how the various tools are implemented give each application its own image quality characteristics, and prohibit image adjustment settings 19

Using Bibble 5 from being shared between applications. Using Bibble 5 in no way limits what you can do with your images or which applications you can use edit or manage your digital photographic files. Metadata Collection During Import Bibble 5 reads and collects metadata embedded in image files, in Bibble XMP files, standard XMP files and in Bibble 4 '.bib' files. The process and order of collecting metadata from these various sources is shown below. 1. If a Bibble XMP file exists, metadata is read from this file and no other metadata is imported. 2. If no Bibble XMP file is found, metadata is read from Standard XMP files 3. If XMP content is embedded in the image file, this is read next and is added to any previously found XMP data, but common fields found in any any other source are ignored. 4. Metadata is then read from Bibble 4 ".bib" files, and this information is added to previously found metadata, but common fields found in bib files any any other source are ignored. 20

Background 1.6 Understanding the Library Asset Management is the means to catalog your digital photographic assets (called Master Files), add metadata to these assets, and search and browse based on that metadata. Thus, building and managing a library with one or more Catalogs of images is a key part of asset management. The Bibble 5 Library & Catalogs If you choose to use Bibble 5's Asset Management features, you will start by importing images into a Catalog. This Catalog is where data and metadata about your photos will be stored. The Library consists of one or more Catalogs, which store many types of data: Original Master Files (or references to Master Files stored in other folders on your computer) Metadata for image searching and browsing Image adjustment settings, and the history of image adjustments Previews & Thumbnails Catalog-specific settings Asset Management is Optional You may prefer not to manage your photographic assets in Bibble 5, while still utilizing Bibble 5 for image editing and RAW file conversion. Or, you might want to get started quickly, just selecting a folder on your computer to work in without even thinking about Asset Management. That's no problem! Though Bibble 5 does contain advanced asset management tools, Bibble 5 is unique in that it does not require you to use these tools. If you are content with a file-system based management approach (where you organize your images by folder and sub-folders that are already present on your computer), or if you use a 3rd Party Asset Management tool that builds and maintains your folders of images, then you can use Bibble 5 in "File System Mode" - just like in Bibble 4. Which to Choose? If you are not sure if you want Asset Management or not, you don't have to decide now! Start using Bibble 5 from the "File System" tab, browsing folders of images direct from your computer or memory card. You can browse, edit, and optimize images from folders on your computer right away - without importing them, building a Library, or even thinking about "Asset Management"! Later, if you decide that you'd like to see images from many folders in one browser view, would like to search or browse by EXIF, IPTC, or other metadata, or would like to use any of the other features that require Asset Management, then just import your folders of images "By Reference", leaving them in place on your hard drive, and instantly building a Bibble 5 Catalog. You can build a Catalog of some or all of your images, but still use Bibble 5 to work on images without having to import them into your Catalog. This is perfect when you just need to quickly work on a small number of photos and don't want to search or keep a permanent record of these images. Features Requiring Bibble 5 Catalogs You'll gain access to the following features when using Bibble 5's Asset Management features, but you'll need to import images into a Catalog first. Browsing Multiple Folders at once - select multiple folders to view thumbnails from all the selected images, or you can Recurse folders to shown thumbnails from the selected folder and all sub-folders of the selected folder. 21

Using Bibble 5 Persistent Edit History - maintaining a log of every image or metadata adjustment you've made to your images, and keeping that log available from day to day, month to month (working in File System mode limits the adjustment history only within that one Bibble 5 session). Image Searching - Find images by searching for filename, EXIF, IPTC or other metadata. Metadata Browsing - Browse through your catalog using EXIF, IPTC or other metadata. Image Stacks - Group Versions from one or many Master Files together into Stacks. Off-Line Image Browsing - Find and manage images that are stored on off-line media like CD's, DVD's or external hard drives. Initial Image Settings - Bibble will store the first set of adjustments found for a every image as those images are bring imported, allowing you to quickly revert to these settings at any time. The Initial Settings may be the Default settings at the time of import, or may have been edits or adjustments made by Bibble 5 on a different computer, or before importing the images into your Library. Multiple Catalogs - Pro only Bibble 5 Pro allows you to build, open, and work with many Catalogs from your Library simultaneously. This allows you to group, backup, and manage sets of files as Catalogs, while preserving the ability to browse, search, and access any image in any open catalog. Image Settings for Images in a Catalog When images are first imported into a Bibble 5 Catalog, the initial settings used for that image are taken from a Bibble XMP file if one exists. If no Bibble XMP file is found, metadata settings (Keywords, Rating, Labels, IPTC or XMP tags) are read from standard XMP files, or the image file itself. Once images have been imported into a Bibble 5 Catalog, changes to any image or metadata settings are stored within the Bibble 5 Catalog. These may be written back to the Bibble XMP files "on demand" by selecting the thumbnails for the images you want to write out the settings for, then right-clicking one of the thumbnails and selecting XMP -> Write Bibble XMP files. Alternately, you may choose to have Bibble 5 always keep the XMP files up to date with the Preference "Allow Bibble.xmp creation for photos in Catalog". 22

Background 1.7 Understanding Output Generation Output Generation will take the previews you see in Bibble and create new image files that you can print, share on the web, or otherwise access in other applications. Since Bibble 5 is a non-destructive image editor, the image adjustments and optimizations you create in Bibble are only accessible to other applications when exported, either individually, or through Bibble 5's powerful Batch Conversion system to industry standard formats like JPEG or TIFF files. Output Batches process images that are added to the batches applying image conversions, file copying, renaming, or other actions while applying pre-defined settings. Batches are used to perform operations to many images at once, speeding your workflow by simplifying repetitive processes. The following types of Batches are available in Bibble 5: Image Output Batches convert Bibble 5 Versions to a new image file that can be accessed by any other application. Copy Output Batches take images that are added to the batch, or take images from a pre-defined location, and copy the Master Files to another location accessible from your computer. These batches can apply image or metadata settings, and can optionally include the resulting files in the current Catalog. These batches can optionally delete the original files, thus moving the from one location to another, or can leave the source images intact. These batches can optionally rename the output images. Image Output Batches Bibble 5 comes with several pre-built Image Output Batches to convert your Versions to output images using pre-defined settings. You can customize any of these Batches or make new ones customized to your working style. The following Batches have been created for you: File Type & Size JPEG Full Size JPEG Image type, 90% image quality Same Pixel Dimensions as the Master File JPEG Proof JPEG Image type, 80% image quality Half Height, Half Width of the Master File 16-bit TIFF TIFF Image type, with 16 bits-per-pixel color data Same Pixel Dimensions as the Master File 8-bit TIFF TIFF Image type, with 8 bits-per-pixel color data Same Pixel Dimensions as the Master File Comments Converts to srgb colorspace. Ideal for printing and final destination usage Converts to srgb colorspace, ideal for sharing on the web Ideal when exporting images for editing in other applications that support 16-bit images Ideal when exporting images for editing in other applications that do not support 16-bit images Copy Batches A Copy Batch does just that - it copies the Master Images added to the batch to a predefined location or locations, optionally renaming the destination files. A Copy batch will copy all Sidecar files that accompany the images added to the batch, ensuring that XMP and other sidecar files are kept together with the original files. Copy Batches are great for automating backups and for downloading images from camera memory cards. 23

Background JPEG Extension Depth JPG, JPEG 8 Bit JPEG files are the most common image files, and are ideal for sharing on the web, by , or for sending to online printing facilities. JPEG files are limited to 8-bit color, and are compressed by a user-selectable amount. Bibble uses a scale to set the JPEG compression level. A setting of 100 will produce a very large file that will show virtually zero compression artifacts. A setting of 50 will produce quite visible artifacts, but will also result in a much smaller file. Bibble defaults to a setting of 80 for Proofs, and 90 for Full Size JPEG's, which provide a good balance of file size and image quality. TIFF TIF, TIFF 8 Bit or 16 Bit TIFF files use only lossless compression, ensuring that 100% of the detail in the original image is preserved in the output image. TIF files can be either 8 Bit or 16 Bit, and produce very large file sizes. About Image Compression Image Compression is the process of lowering the file size of an image to allow more images to be stored in a fixed amount of space. Image compression can either be Lossy or Lossless. Lossy Compression means that data is lost during the compression process. Data that is lost is never able to be retrieved, meaning that the compressed image will lack detail and image information that was present in the original image. Small amounts of lossy compression (like JPEG Compression level of 90 or higher) produce images that are very similar in detail and image quality to the original image, while more aggressive compression settings (lower numbers, like 50 or 70) will produce noticeable compression artifacts and detail loss. Lossless Compression reduces the file size with no loss of data, and therefore no loss of image quality. 27

Using Bibble About Image Size In film photography, understanding the size of an image was simple - it was simply the size of the print. With digital photography, things are a little more complicated. There are at least three different aspects to the "size" of a digital photograph: File Size - Typically measured in megabytes (MB), this measures to the amount of disk or memory card space consumed by the image file. Pixel Size - Measured in pixels or megapixels, this is measures the number of individual pixels or colored dots that comprise the image. Print Size - Measured inches, millimeters, or other physical units of measure. Any time a measure of length, like inches or centimeters, is used to describe a digital image, they are referring to Print Size. Every digital photograph from a given camera will start out with the exact same Pixel Size, which will be something like 3000x2400 pixles, or about 7 megapixels and corresponds to the number of photo-sites or pixels your camera's sensor has. However, the File Size for different photos from the same camera will vary. This is based on image content and is due to compression techniques used to make the file as small as possible. Generally speaking, a higher megapixel camera will produce larger files. Print size is determined by two things: Pixel Size and how many pixels to print in a given physical size, commonly called DPI or dots per inch or PPI, pixels per inch. For example, the 3000x2400 pixel image from the example above, when printed at 300 DPI will be exactly 10 inches by 8 inches (3000 pixels / 300 pixels per inch = 10 inches). Changing only the DPI in no way affects the file size on the photo or the pixel size, it only changes the Print Size. For example, changing that same image to 600 DPI, which would yield a 4 inch by 5 print. DPI and Print Size only matter when printing an photo; DPI is irrelevant to images on screen, in , or otherwise viewed, edited or used on a computer. Pixel Size alone determines how much information or "quality" in stored in the image file. Cropping & Resizing Cropping an image is used to re-compose the shot to include only portions of the original image, or to change the Aspect Ratio - the height relative to the width - of the photo. If you have several images from the same camera that you want to print the same size, some after cropping and some without cropping, then the DPI of those images must be different. Resizing allows you to make the Pixel Size larger or smaller than the original image. To continue the example from above, suppose you cropped a portion of the image from the center of the frame, say 1500 by 1200 pixels. A "Full Size" output image from this cropped image would be 1500 by 1200 pixels - much smaller than your original image. You could still print this image at 10 inches by 8 inches - but that would be at 150 DPI instead of 300. If you wanted to make an output image in Bibble 5 that had the same pixel dimensions as the original file, you would need to upscale - or stretch - the image back to 3000x2400 pixels. This does not add information or quality to the photo, and it will not print significantly better now than before it was resized. NOTE: See the topic on Cropping for details on how to crop in Bibble 5 When DPI or Print Size Matters If you print from within Bibble 5, then DPI and Print Size will be handled for you automatically by our Print Output system. If your images are only shown on computer screens, in or in other electronic forms, then DPI and Print Size are meaningless. DPI and Print Size only matter when you output images from Bibble to be printed by someone else. 28

Chapter II Library and Catalogs

Using Bibble 5 Library and Catalogs Cataloging and Asset Management in Bibble 5 is the fastest way to help you organize your images. Bibble 5 lets you import your images into searchable Catalogs, allowing you to organize your images to make finding specific images quick and easy. You can import images that already exist on your hard drive, on a network or external drive, or on removable media like CD's, DVD's, or memory cards. Once images are in a Catalog, you can search by keywords, filename or other attributes, browse by shooting information, keywords, and many other attributes, and the Catalog stores other information about your images, and the adjustments applied to your images, making Bibble easier and faster to use. This section will examine how to create Catalogs, the various options available when creating Catalogs, and the features available when using Catalogs. Library Tab Showing Two Catalogs Catalogs are grouped together on the Library Tab of the Browse Panel. The image above shows the Catalog Browser with two Bibble 5 Catalogs open, and highlights some of the controls offered in the Catalog Browser, like the Search Box and the Recurse Folders toggle. Importing Options There are five main ways you can use Bibble to organize your images: 1. Importing & Copying the Image Files 2. Importing & Moving the Image Files 3. Importing & Refering to Original Locaion 4. Importing & Referring to Original Files (Advanced - Pro Only) 5. Not Importing Images (File System Mode) The first four options all will build a catalog of your images, allowing you to search and browse through the catalog to view images from any number of different folders or to search for images by keywords, image settings, shooting time or date, or many other items. The last option - Not Importing Images - allows you to bypass Bibble 5's built in Asset Management system. This is a great option if you are using another application to catalog and organize your images, and only want to use Bibble for image editing and optimizations. This option allows you to browse images by folder, allowing you to get right to work without waiting for images to import or to be copied or moved into your catalog. This option, also called the File System approach, is the fastest way to get started with Bibble 5, but does limit some of the features only available when using a Catalog. 30
