Concurrent Enrollment Team The K 12 Connections/Concurrent Enrollment team at Southeast Community College wants you to get a head start on college courses while you are still in high school. We believe that students who earn 7 to 9 college credits while still in high school are more likely to graduate from college than students who do not take advantage of this opportunity. Nationally published research studies support this belief! We offer a varied list of courses in a variety of delivery methods. We want you to find one that works for you! 4 Dear Concurrent Enrollment Student, Welcome to Southeast Community College! We are excited that you are taking this opportunity to expand your horizons and grow your educational opportunity by taking college classes while still in high school. More and more students nation wide are taking college classes for college and/or high school credit. The course or courses you will take are indeed college courses. The rigor and expectations will be the same as they would be if you were in a class on one of our campuses. What you should know about concurrent enrollment: These are official Southeast Community College courses, taught according to our college syllabi, using college level textbooks. High school faculty and other adjunct faculty who are approved to teach concurrent enrollment classes have submitted an application to SCC, their credentials have been reviewed, and they are authorized to teach the college course. Academic work in these courses is at the college level you should anticipate a rigorous set of objectives and a more substantial time commitment to complete the work outside of class time. These courses create an official Southeast Community College transcript. You are enrolled in a section of a course, and an official grade is submitted to SCC. The official SCC transcript will not indicate that you took the class at an off campus location. It will simply list the course name, code, quarter and grade. Since these courses create a transcript, this credit can be used towards a degree at SCC or transferred to most public and many private colleges in Nebraska and around the country. Every college and university has its own policies regarding acceptance of transferred credit. We urge you to check with any colleges you are interested in attending to ask about their transfer credit policies and specific classes you take from SCC. Some of the courses through the Southeast Nebraska Career Academy Partnership (SENCAP) are offered at no tuition cost to students. Most courses, however, cost the low per credit hour rate that SCC charges and a small per hour fee. Please remember that you will also be responsible for purchase of college texts. Congratulations on making this decision and taking this important step. The following pages will provide you with a lot of information and hopefully answer all of your questions. Please read this handbook carefully. Feel free to contact us if you have other questions or need additional assistance! Sincerely, Dr. Randy A. Nelson SENCAP Director Page 4 of 18

What is a Concurrent Enrollment Course? Concurrent enrollment, sometimes called Dual Credit, refers to a course where a student is earning both high school and college credit for a course which is usually taught at the student s high school by a high school or adjunct instructor approved by Southeast Community College. These courses are offered at SCC s low tuition rate (compared to other colleges and universities) or possibly at no cost to the students if a part of a Career Academy curriculum. Concurrent Enrollment/Career Academy Partnering High Schools Ashland Greenwood High School Beatrice High School Bruning Davenport High School Cedar Bluffs High School Centennial High School Crete High School Deshler High School Diller Odell High School Dorchester High School Elmwood Murdock High School Exeter Milligan High School Fairbury High School Falls City High School Fillmore Central High School Freeman High School Friend High School Heartland Community High School Lincoln Christian High School Lincoln Public High Schools Louisville High School Malcolm High School Mead High School McCool Junction High School Mead High School Meridian High School Milford High Schools Nebraska City High School Norris High School Plattsmouth High School Raymond Central High School Seward High School Shickley High School Southern High School Thayer Central High School Tri County High School Wahoo High School Waverly High School Weeping Water High School Wilber Clatonia High School Yutan High School Enrollment Procedures Students must register through their high school guidance department and be approved by the high school in order to take Concurrent Enrollment courses. Official college registration forms are provided to the high school for students to complete, parents/guardians to sign and the high school to sign approval of the student taking the course. Guidelines for student eligibility: a. The student has demonstrated readiness to take a college level course. b. The student has taken any pre requisite classes OR c. The student has obtained appropriate scores on the COMPASS or ACT tests. Page 5 of 18

There is strict Timeline or Calendar that must be met for registration and payment of tuition and fees. This calendar is provided to the high school. Students are required to complete and submit: 1. Registration Form Credit Courses. Originals are available through the high school counselor s office. 2. Permission for Enrollment Form. On this form you will list identifying information, including your Social Security number, and the course or courses you wish to take. A parent or guardian signature, acknowledging SCC policies and payments, must be included. Finally, a school counselor or principal must sign the form that you are approved. You must be 16 years old or older in order to take courses from Southeast Community College unless special permission is given. What it Means to Start a College Transcript Students need to understand that the grades earned in a college course from Southeast Community College will become part of a permanent college transcript. Poor grades in a Concurrent Enrollment course could have an impact on college academic standing and eligibility for financial aid after high school. Students should be aware that there may be differences in the way their college grade and their high school grade may be figured for the course. A student may not receive the same grade for the college course as he/she receives for the high school dual credit portion of the course. Students need to understand the meaning of grades in the SCC system that may be different from the high school grading system. For example, F is the grade for Unsatisfactory performance below 60%. W is used when a student withdraws from a class within the calendar limits created for each SCC term. A W replaces any grade the student may be earning to that point. There are important deadlines for adding, dropping and paying for SCC classes that must be followed. It is recommended that students obtain a Catalog from SCC or access it online at: Page 6 of 18

Adding/Dropping a Course When registering for a class, students have a choice as to payment. 1. Send a check with the Registration and Permission for Enrollment forms. (Please do not send cash. If all you have is cash, perhaps your school can convert it to a check for you. Mailing cash is never a good idea.) 2. Include the Credit Card name (MasterCard/Visa or Discover), the number, expiration date and the name of the person on the card with the Registration and Permission for Enrollment forms. 3. Receive a bill from SCC. If you register in the spring for fall classes, you will receive a bill over the summer. Payment is due by the first class meeting. If you register for spring classes during your fall semester, you will receive a bill as soon as we have the paperwork. Payment is due by the first class meeting. 4. ALL billing questions should be addressed to Audrey at the SCC Business Office on the Beatrice campus: or , apriefer@southeast.edu Students should keep in mind that you cannot register for any future SCC class nor receive a transcript if you have any outstanding bill at SCC. Students and parents/guardians need to also remember that bills can be sent to collection agencies if necessary. If a student decides to drop or withdraw from a course, official paperwork must be completed by SCC. Please discuss your decision with your high school counselor or principal. Ask that person to contact either Janet Claassen, Randy Hiatt or any of the regional SENCAP coordinators to get the paperwork completed. If a student drops a class before the first class meeting, a full refund of tuition and fees can be made. All students have until % of the class term to drop and receive a tuition refund. You or your counselor can obtain the date from Janet Claassen or Randy Hiatt. There will be no record of this course on the student transcript. After a class has met 12.5% of the time or more and less than 75% of the time, if a student needs to withdraw, a grade of W will be entered on his/her transcript with the class name and number. Once again, official paperwork needs to be completed. Have your school counselor or principal contact Janet Claassen or Randy Hiatt. Failure to attend class does not constitute a drop or withdrawal. Failure to contact one of the SCC team members to complete the appropriate paperwork could result in a grade being entered permanently on the student s transcript. A student who does not drop following the appropriate deadlines and procedures will still be responsible for all tuition and fees associated with that course. Page 7 of 18

Grading System At the beginning of a Concurrent Enrollment class, students should receive a syllabus and other information from the instructor as to grading policies and criteria for that class. Please review What it Means to Start a College Transcript. At the end of the course, grades are posted to WebAdvisor for student access. Grades are not mailed. The SCC Catalog states, Grades are posted to WebAdvisor within one week following the end of the term. Grades become part of the student s permanent record. It is the student s responsibility to review his/her grades for accuracy. If there is a question or disagreement with the grade, a student must contact the campus Registration and Records Office. Grade disputes must be resolved within 10 classroom days (not counting Saturdays, Sundays or holidays) after the start date of the next term. On the 11 th classroom day of the next term, the grade is considered to be permanent. Students can access their grades online with WebAdvisor using login ID and password. Contact SCC Student Services for more information. The SCC grading scale is listed here: CREDIT TRANSCRIPT KEY Grade Status Honor Points Description Percentage A+ Permanent 4.0 Excellent A Permanent B+ Permanent 3.5 Above Average B Permanent C+ Permanent 2.5 Average C Permanent D+ Permanent 1.5 Below Average D Permanent F Permanent 0.0 Failure Below 60 P Permanent ** Pass NP Permanent ** No Pass I Temporary ** Incomplete W Permanent ** Withdraw AU Permanent ** Audit No Credit PX ** Pass Exam CW ** Credit by Waiver **Not included in GPA Students should refer to the SCC Catalog for definitions of grades P, NP, I, W, AU, PX, CW. 9 Transfer Agreements SCC maintains special cooperative programs and transfer agreements with many colleges and universities. Any student who has successfully completed the courses identified in the articulated curriculum with an equivalent of a C (2.0 on a 4.0 scale) or higher and is admitted to a participating institution will be: 1. Granted standing comparable to current students who have completed the same number of equivalent credit courses toward an associate/baccalaureate level degree; and 2. Able to progress toward an associate/baccalaureate degree completion at a rate comparable to that of students who entered the associate/baccalaureate institution as first time freshmen. Every college and university has its own policies governing transferring credit. It is the responsibility of the student to check with the receiving institution regarding courses that may transfer from SCC. Transfer Equivalencies for Career Academy Courses Most of the courses offered through the SCC Career Academies (in the ESU2, ESU 3, ESU 5, and ESU 6) are transferable. Please remember that the receiving school determines transferability, and this list is subject to change.
