2 01 32 nd edition of Jazz em Agosto The 32nd edition of Jazz em Agosto will take place between 31 July and 9 August, with a series of concerts in the outdoor auditorium of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. In 2015, Jazz em Agosto will be marked by the presence in Lisbon of large-scale orchestras, one of the characteristics with which it has been identified for three decades, along with the concept of jazz timelessness through the involvement of musicians revisiting past projects to reinvent them or highlighting, through new projects, the importance of their journey. This year s edition also pays particular attention to saxophonist Mats Gustafsson, with two projects, the ambitious Fire! Orchestra featured in the opening concert - and the surprising Swedish Azz. A special highlight to the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the AACM of Chicago, with the presence of Henry Threadgill and Wadada Leo Smith, both iconic musicians of this association. Fire! Orchestra Jazz em Agosto will open with the Fire! Orchestra, an ambitious project by Mats Gustafsson who has turned the Fire! trio - Mats Gustafsson, Johan Berthling and Andreas Werliin into a large ensemble of mind-blowing energy. They will perform in Lisbon with 19 musicians, life-long friends and stage buddies of the trio s founders, featuring the voices of Sofia Jernberg and Mariam Wallentin. The Fire! Orchestra reveals the explosive power of music created from the friction between jazz, psychedelic rock, improvised music and electronics. Michael Mantler s Jazz Composer s Update & Orquestra Jazz de Matosinhos In 1968, Austrian trumpeter directed the Jazz Composer s Orchestra s historical album, enjoying the talents of Carla Bley, Don Cherry, Pharoah Sanders and Cecil Taylor. More than 45 years later, Mantler discovered the timelessness of the liberating spirit of this recording, in an update of this project that will be performed exclusively in Jazz em Agosto, by the Orquestra Jazz de Matosinhos. Mats Gustafsson s Swedish Azz A Quintet brought together by Mats Gustafsson and Per Åke Holmlander, Swedish Azz is based on the repertoire of the founders of Swedish jazz in the 1950s and 60s, inspired by the sounds drifting over from the West Coast, albeit pervious to local musical tradition, to deconstruct it with the contribution of Dieb 13 s electronics marking the contemporaneity of the project. RED trio & John Butcher The Portuguese jazz ensemble, having enjoyed success abroad in partnerships with major international musicians, revives its 2011 encounter with saxophonist John Butcher, which was preserved on the disk Empire.

3 02 Lok 03 Alexander von Schlippenbach / Aki Takase / DJ illvibe The project from pianists Alexander von Schlippenbach and Aki Takase, with DJ illvibe, crosses space and time to create music that, in this concert, consists of an improvised accompaniment to the 1927 documentary Symphony of a Great City. This black and white feature film, directed by German Walter Ruttmann, records the various daily situations encountered in the German capital, through visual impressions without apparent order or narrative and a revolutionary montage technique. Ingebrigt Håker-Flaten s The Young Mothers The Young Mothers is the new sextet that Norwegian bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten created in Austin, where he now lives, with four musicians from Texas and one from Chicago. It s described by critic Clifford Allen as a brilliant band that merges modern jazz, free improvisation, indie rock, hip hop and a caterwauling Afro-groove reminiscent of the Brotherhood of Breath. Wadada Leo Smith s The Great Lakes Suites feat. Henry Threadgill The Great Lakes Suites project, regarded as one of the most remarkable works of trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith, will have its European première at Jazz em Agosto. This concert will also feature saxophonist Henry Threadgill who, like Wadada, is one of the most representative musicians of the Chicago Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Orchestre National de Jazz dir. Olivier Benoît The Orchestre National de Jazz was completely redesigned in 2014 by its new artistic director Olivier Benoît. Since then, it has been developing its Europa programme, a series of city portraits, whose aim is to outline a complex and subjective musical map of European contemporaneity. Young talents Sophie Agnel, Alexandra Grimal, Theo Ceccaldi and Eric Echampard will all be featured in this orchestra.
