2 Dear New Students and Parents: Welcome to UVA! Now that you ve decided to come to the University, you have several more important decisions to make before arriving on Grounds in August. As you know, access to a computer is essential in the pursuit of your academic goals. Although it s not required, nearly 99 percent of last year s entering class brought notebook computers with them to the University. The lighter-weight models are so portable that you can take them everywhere enabling you to collaborate with peers in group study spaces around Grounds, write papers on the Lawn on a beautiful day, and carry your laptop home with you during school holidays. If you are considering a new computer, UVA recommends certain standards for hardware and software. Cavalier Computers, located in the University Bookstore, sells computers that meet or exceed University standards from Apple, Dell, HP, and Lenovo that are called Computing at Virginia, or CAV program computers. These are the only fully supported computers at UVA endorsed by the University. CAV Program computers make your life easy as they come pre-installed with essential software. Every CAV Windows computer comes with Microsoft Windows 7 Professional, Microsoft Office, a Web browser, , virus protection, (Symantec Endpoint Protection AntiVirus which does not expire and auto updates!), and other commonly used Internet utilities. The Mac comes with a Mac OS X, Microsoft Office and a similar software bundle, appropriate for that platform. CAV Program computers have a custom configuration that securely and optimally makes your computer ready to connect to the UVA network. CAV Program computers include up to a full, four-year, manufacturer s hardware warranty. That means if your laptop breaks, Cavalier Computers Service Dept., located inside the UVA Bookstore and TJ s Locker, will handle its repair. Cavalier s technicians are Apple-, Dell-, HP-, and Lenovoauthorized. Spare parts are already on hand for CAV Program models. There is no need to schedule an appointment with a service technician or box up your computer and ship it far away. This minimizes your downtime. Should you have an extensive repair, you will be offered a loaner computer to ensure your studies do not suffer. There are many decisions to make and more things to do, both before and after you arrive on grounds. Let the CAV Computing and Dorm Delivery Program help alleviate the worry and hassle of Move-In Day. Our staff can deliver your computer, printer and technology accessories to your dorm room before you arrive. We also offer a wide range of UVA Housing approved dorm supplies that will be delivered at no additional charge. 5 What Comes With Your CAV Program Computer Worry Free Computing with On-Grounds Service & Support Cavalier Computers, a division of the UVA Bookstore, offers students the ONLY fully supported computers endorsed by UVA. Your CAV Program computer includes a pre-installed customized operating system which will sync with the UVA Network in the safest way possible. Unique UVA software is installed for information backup to the UVA Servers and connectivity to UVA s wired and wireless networks. You will be ready to go out of the box with no additional software to purchase or configure. You can have your CAV Program computer delivered in the manner most convenient for you. We will have it waiting for you in your dorm room, ship it to your home or notify you of its arrival for pick-up at the main Cavalier Computers Showroom. Your CAV Program computer will have installed and configured a full version of Symantec Endpoint Protection Suite with auto updates for anti-virus, spyware and firewall protection. All CAV Program computers include a full version of Microsoft Office for PCs and Macs. Your CAV Program Dell, HP and Lenovo computers will be pre-installed with Microsoft Windows 7 Professional, a more robust and comprehensive software package than the Home Version typically included with consumer models. Your CAV Program computer will also come with a 3 or 4-year manufacturer s warranty (a CAV exclusive for Apple). In addition, Dell, HP and Lenovo computers come with accidental damage protection plans covering your computer from spilled drinks, drops, and more (accidental damage coverage not available for Apple Computers). Each Dell (excluding XPS13), HP and Lenovo models come with a three-year battery warranty, as opposed to the one-year available at most other computer stores, that can save you as much as 450 in future battery expenses during your time at UVA. All CAV Program computers include UVA restoration media. Should a re-build be necessary, this media will restore your computer to its initial state with all of the UVA specific software and settings back in place. Service department located on grounds inside the UVA Bookstore, open six days a week. Bookstore Hours: Mon Fri 8:30am 7pm, Sat 10am 6pm. Service Department drop-off location also available at TJ s Locker in the Aquatic Fitness Center open 7 days a week. Manufacturer certified local service technicians to expedite your service. CAV Program computers receive priority service over non-cav computers. Spare parts for CAV Program computers are in-stock to reduce repair time. Inventory of loaner computers available for CAV Program computers needing lengthy repairs. UVA Restoration media included to restore your computer to its initial state with all of the UVA specific software and settings back in place, should a re-build be necessary.
