2 Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine for Female Infertility Carolina Medina DVM, DACVSMR CVA, CVCH, CVTP, CVFT According to traditional Chinese veterinary medicine (TCVM), female reproductive function depends on the normal activities of Qi, Blood, the reproductive organs and the Channels. The Kidney controls the uterus and ovaries and Kidney Jing controls the germination and growth of the ovarian follicle. Kidney Qi gives rise to ovulation. The Liver regulates the estrus cycle and provides Blood to nourish the uterus and genital structures. The Channels carry Qi and Blood from the organs to the fetus. The primary Channels involved in reproduction are the Conception Vessel and the Chong Vessel. The Conception Vessel receives and regulates the Qi of the Yin Channels and assists the reproductive functions. The Kidney is closely connected to the Conception Vessel. The Chong Vessel originates from the uterus, preserves the Qi and Blood of the 12 Regular Channels and regulates fertility and estrus functions. The Liver is closely associated with the Chong Vessel. Female infertility syndrome includes the following disorders: anestrus due to ovary quiescence or persistent corpus luteum, irregular estrus, anovulatory follicles or silent estrus. Female infertility can be divided into 3 TCVM Patterns: Kidney Qi Deficiency, Kidney-Liver Yin Deficiency, and Qi-Blood Stagnation. The Kidney stores Jing and dominates reproduction through Kidney Qi. Therefore Kidney Qi Deficiency affects reproductive function and leads to infertility. Kidney Qi Deficiency can be treated with acupuncture points CV-1/3/4, GV-3/4, KID-7, BL- 24/26, Bai-hui, Shen-shu, Shen-peng, Shen-jiao and Yan-chi and the Chinese herbal medicine Yin Yang Fang. Kidney-Liver Yin Deficiency prevents the hormonal system from properly influencing the reproductive functions resulting in infertility. Kidney-Liver Yin Deficiency can be treated with acupuncture points SP-3/6, KID-6/7, BL-18/23/52, Bai-hui, Shen-shu, Shen-peng, Shen-jiao and Yanchi and the Chinese herbal medicine Liu Wei Di Huang. Qi-Blood Stagnation prevents reproductive organs from functioning properly despite normal hormone levels, causing infertility. Qi-Blood Stagnation can be treated with acupuncture points GV-14, LIV-3, GB-34, LI-4, SP-10, BL-17/23/52, Bai-hui, Shen-shu, Shen-peng, Shen-jiao and Yanchi and the Chinese herbal medicine Lotus Formula (Jing Tang, Cooling Foods for the Warm Weather Ahead As summer approaches, dogs and cats with a tendency toward Yin Deficiency will especially suffer, as they attempt to cool their bodies. Foods ods can be added to help them keep cool in the hot summer months. These foods are not recommended for Yang Deficient Animals. Proteins: turkey, chicken egg whites duck, rabbit, clams, crab Vegetables and Fruits: broccoli, celery, cucumbers, tomatoes, eggplant, mango, cranberries, watermelon, strawberries, pears, bananas, mushrooms, white radishes Grains: barley, brown rice, millet 2
3 AATCVM and WATCVM Join Forces to Meet Common Goals The inaugural meeting of the World Association of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (WATCVM) was held on September 14, 2013 in conjunction of the 15 th Annual International TCVM Conference in Madrid, Spain. 7 Welcome to the New AJTCVM Editor-in-Chief Dr. Judith Saik will be assuming the Editor-in-Chef position of the American Journal of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Journal (AJTCVM) as of April Send manuscripts to: MESSAGE FROM THE NEW AJTCVM EDITOR- IN-CHIEF AJTCVM News I had my daughter Catie and started looking for a position that might not demand so much of my time. The University of Pennsylvania came to my rescue and offered me a position that would allow me time with my daughter while teaching residents and serving on the biopsy and necropsy services Once my daughter was a little older, I accepted a position as a toxicologic pathologist at Dupont s Haskell Laboratory in Delaware but continued to serve as a lecturer at Penn in the Large Animal Course. I remained at Dupont for a number of years learning development of products and working with regulatory agencies such as the FDA and EPA. It was the perfect preparation for a position that became available at Merial Animal Health Products, where I combined my love of domestic species pathology with research and development of veterinary pharmaceuticals. I hail from New Orleans, Louisiana and graduated from Louisiana State University Veterinary School in I met my husband in veterinary school (same class), married at the end of our senior year and the two of us headed for a mixed practice in Maryland. My duties were mostly with the large animal clientele while my husband joined the small animal team. After a couple of years, I set up my own mobile, predominately equine, practice. As time marched on, I became increasingly interested in the underlying mechanisms of the diseases I worked with daily. This led me to evaluate pathology residency programs and accept a 3-year residency program with the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary School. Following successful completion of this program and attaining pathology boards, I remained at the Large Animal Facility (New Bolton Center) as a lecturer for a year before accepting a position in the Comparative Pathology Section at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. This position gave me the opportunity to work with a wide variety of species (snakes to turkeys to fish and just about any mammal you can think of) providing pathology support for research projects on the NIH campus along with investigating disease outbreaks in colonies maintained at the site. While at NIH, While I was working in the pathology positions, I continued to provide a small amount of clinical work on horses. I have been an avid horsewoman my entire life and continued to own horses and stay active in the equine community. While maintaining my state license to practice, I attended a continuing education course about 8 years ago where I watched an acupuncture demonstration on a horse with severe laminitis. It was one of the most amazing things I have ever witnessed and I vowed I was going to learn the technique. After all, how hard could it be to throw a few needles into an animal?! I have realized over the years how wrong that first simple assumption was as I daily learn new things when applying TCVM to my cases in our small animal clinic in Winterville Georgia. Under Dr. Cheryl Chrisman s expert guidance, the AATCVM journal has been instrumental in helping so many of us in our own educational journeys to master TCVM and I know I am personally excited when I see the journal show up in my mail twice a year. I hope as Editorin-Chief of this journal to continue to provide (along with our Associate Editors) the great mix of articles, which readers have come to expect that provide added clinical expertise, as well as delve deeper into current research, the cornerstone for evidence-based TCVM. Judith E Saik DVM, DACVP 7

9 AATCVM News AATCVM BOARD MEETING MARCH 12, 2014 The annual meeting of the AATCVM Board was March 12, Dr. Judith Saik was introduced and will assume the role of Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (AJTCVM) May Dr. Suzy Brannan provided the financial report and the AATCVM is financially solvent. She also reported that the AJTCVM also has a solid list of advertisers. Dr. Cheryl Chrisman reported that the AJTCVM 9(2) will be another strong issue with a good balance of basic science and clinical studies, as well as continuing education. Dr. Hawkins reported that money is available for high quality TCVM research projects and 2 proposals should be submitted shortly. Dr. Shen Xie reported that applications have been made for inclusion of AJTCVM in the Thomson Reuters Science Citation Index (SCI) and United States National Library of Medicine (PubMed) databases. The process takes approximately 1 year. Inclusion in these databases will greatly increase the number of papers submitted to AJTCVM, since most Chinese researchers can only obtain MS and PhD degrees after publication in an SCI approved journal. Mr. Zhen Zhao presented membership recruitment and retention statistics and the Board discussed ways to promote membership and streamline the methods to join or renew. Individuals who do not have a pay-pal account are having trouble applying on-line with a credit card. Other people struggle with the on-line application process itself. A designated member service phone line and will be established to improve the membership process. Methods of streamlining AATCVM free memberships for current acupuncture students have been improved. AATCVM RESEARCH COMMITTEE Each spring, AATCVM evaluates research proposals related to Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) from individual researchers and those affiliated with any group or country and awards small grants to those that qualify. All research proposals should be well designed, following the outline listed on the AATCVM website ( illustrating that the applicant understands the problem and proposes a sound scientific method of investigation. Completed proposals should be submitted to: HawkinsDL@ajtcvm.org. All proposals must be received at the latest by April 1 of the award year and are reviewed by the AATCVM Research Committee chaired by Dr. Dan Hawkins. The committee may request an external review or consultation by an expert regarding specific issues pertaining to the proposal. The results of the Research Committee evaluation will be sent to the principal investigator by May 1 of the same year. Funding will be awarded to those investigators whose projects have been approved by May 30 of the current year. The AATCVM Research Committee requests submission of TCVM research proposals as outlined on the AATCVM website by April 31, AJTCVM Call for Papers Support the American Journal of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (AJTCVM) by submitting your manuscripts to the AJTCVM Editor-in-Chief Dr. Judy Saik at: saikj@ajtcvm.org.
