2 Andrea Collins, LVT, VTS (ECC): Meet our Speakers Andrea is a graduate of the Veterinary Technology program at Blue Ridge Community College, graduating in Immediately following graduation Andrea began working in the small animal Intensive Care Unit of the Virginia Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine. In 2008 Andrea took on the role of manager of the unit where - in addition to her role of LVT - she oversees daily functions of the ICU and manages its many employees. As an ICU LVT she cares for critical patients, treats incoming emergencies, and teaches senior veterinary students and clinical staff both basic and advanced nursing skills. In 2012 Andrea became a Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) in Emergency and Critical Care. She is a member of VALVT, NAVTA, AVECCT/VECCS. Her professional interests include emergency and critical care medicine, teaching, management, and promoting the veterinary technician profession. Outside of the veterinary field, Andrea has a strong passion for promoting breast cancer awareness and is a volunteer for the Virginia Blue Ridge Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Janyce Cooper, LVT, VTS (Dental): Janyce Cooper was recently named the 2013 Licensed Veterinary Technician of the Year for the state of Virginia. She received this honor from the VALVT in recognition of her professionalism, expertise, and compassion and in upholding and improving the standards of professional practice and education. In addition to being the Virginia State Technician of the Year, Janyce was one of five veterinary technicians nationwide chosen by the Petplan Pet Insurance company to be in the running for their Licensed Veterinary Technician of the Year program. Janyce is a 2003 graduate of the Veterinary Technology Program at Blue Ridge Community College. Her professional interest in animal dentistry began in early 2004, when she began working at Pet Care Veterinary Hospital in Virginia Beach. Her fascination with exotics mixed well with her passion to educate and improve the dental health of clients pets. Promoting quality dental care became her ambition and as a result she has brought a higher standard of care to Pet Care Veterinary Hospital. In 2006, Janyce was certified as a Veterinary Dental Technician through the American Society of Dental Technicians. She has recently completed the credentialing process, which included 6,000 hours of experience (3,000 related to dental practice) along with an additional 50 hours of continuing education in various areas of animal dentistry specified by the AVDT. In 2013 Janyce obtained her Veterinary Technician Specialty in Dentistry.
3 Alison Gottlieb, BS, CVT, VTS (ECC) Common Emergencies Several common emergencies are covered from pathology to triage and emergency treatment. Some topics covered are; GDV, the blocked cat, and respiratory emergencies. Alison Gottlieb passed the National Veterinary Technician exam and also the Emergency Critical Care boards sponsored by the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society (VECCS). Her career started at Cat Hospital At Towson (CHAT), this is where her passion for cats was able to bloom. Before starting Four Paws Consulting, she was part of the health care team at the Veterinary Referral Center in Little Falls, NJ from 1997 until it closed in Ms. Gottlieb was a Senior ICU Nurse, with the responsibility of triaging and stabilizing emergencies and caring for critically ill animals. She was also responsible for training new technicians at the hospital, through lectures and hands-on experience Ms. Gottlieb is a graduate of Towson State University, with a BS in Animal Behavior. She has published articles in Veterinary Technician journal and was twice featured as the cover story. Alison served as a member at large on the board of regents for AVECCT in She is currently the chair of the seminar committee for NAVTA. In 2007, Alison had the pleasure of lecturing internationally invited to New Zealand and Australia to speak at the University of Massey as well as Queensland University. She was invited back to Australia in 2009 to share her expertise in feline medicine, at Brisbane and Queensland University in Australia. In 2010, Alison was a featured speaker at the ECC Congress in England. She spends her free time with her energetic pitbulls and her indoor and feral feline friends. Together with her business partner Jessica Kerr; they travel to clinics and conferences helping technicians and improving patient care through Four Paws Consulting. Rebekah Gunn-Christie, DVM Dr. Gunn-Christie graduated from North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine and completed a residency in clinical pathology at the University of Florida. She successfully passed her pathology board exam and has been a pathologist with Antech Diagnostics since Dr. Gunn- Christie strives to find a healthy work-life balance. Her professional activities also include being a consultant with the Veterinary Information Network (VIN), assistant adjunct professor at NCSU, active member of the Quality Assurance Committee of the American Society of Veterinary Clinical Pathology, presenter at numerous continuing education seminars, and contributor to various text books and journals. She is also a registered yoga teacher, leading classes at several studios in the Raleigh, NC area. Bridget Hickman, DVM
4 Randy C. Lynn, DVM, MS, DACVCP Diabetes Mellitus in Dogs and Cats... Too Much of a Sweet Thing Diabetes mellitus is a complex, multifactorial disease that affects pets and people throughout the world. Unfortunately, the incidence of this condition is increasing in all species affected. This lecture will review the history of the disease, as well as current theories on the pathogenesis in dogs and cats. Dr. Lynn completed graduate training in Veterinary Physiology and Pharmacology and graduated from the College of Veterinary Medicine at the Ohio State University in After two years of full time veterinary practice in Greensboro, North Carolina he worked at Schering Animal Health for one year. In 1986 Dr. Lynn moved to CIBA-GEIGY Corporation (now Novartis Animal Health) where he spent 11 years working in product development, professional services and finally in the regulatory affairs department working directly with the FDA to gain approval for new products. His efforts helped produce several new product approvals including Interceptor, Program for Cats, Sentinel and Percorten-V. In 1997, he joined Blue Ridge Pharmaceuticals and began work on several new products including PZI VET, Navigator, Surpass and ProZinc. In 1998 Blue Ridge was acquired by IDEXX Laboratories. In 2008, the pharmaceutical division of IDEXX was sold and he re-joined Intervet Schering-Plough as Manager of Technical Services. In 2010 Intervet Schering-Plough was renamed Merck Animal Health. He is currently responsible for educating veterinarians about Merck Animal Health products and acting as a goodwill ambassador to the veterinary profession. Dr. Lynn is the author or co-author of several veterinary textbooks and numerous research articles. He often lectures at local, national and international veterinary meetings regarding veterinary pharmacology, parasitology and internal medicine. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics and a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Clinical Pharmacology. Megan Shepherd, DVM, PhD, DACVN Choosing the Best Food for Your Pet In this hour Dr. Shepherd will discuss the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) Selecting the Best Food for your Pet document. Dr. Shepherd graduated from the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine (VMCVM) in 2006 and went on to practice an equine private practice in Maryland for 2 years. Dr. Shepherd found a calling in nutrition and research and returned to Virginia-Maryland to complete a PhD in biomedical and veterinary sciences along with a comparative nutrition residency. She is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Nutrition and has been a faculty member as a Clinical Assistant Professor at VMCVM since As a faculty member she provides clinical nutrition consultation for all species (mostly cats, dogs and horses) to inhouse clinicians, veterinary students, and refering veterinarians. Dr. Shepherd also teaches nutrition to veterinary students; VMCVM is one of only 18 vet schools that has ACVN diplomates.
5 Leslie Sinn, DVM CPDT-KA Dr. Sinn obtained her bachelor s degree in Animal Science and her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine degree, both from the University of Georgia. She continued on at Georgia for additional training, successfully completing an internship in small animal medicine and surgery while caring for all of the exotic, avian cases and wildlife cases seen at the hospital. Dr. Sinn moved to Northern Virginia in 1985 and helped to establish one of the first avian and exotic practices in the area. After five years in private practice, she returned to academia when she joined the faculty at the Northern Virginia Community College's Veterinary Technology Program. Although she continues to teach at NOVA, her focus is now entirely on behavior. She has completed over 400+ hours of post-graduate studies in psychology, animal behavior and welfare and is currently fulfilling the requirements of a residency in behavior medicine with the goal of achieving board certification with the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists (ACVB). As a veterinarian with a behavior-only practice, she specializes in finding solutions to all types of behavioral issues and concerns. Dr. Sinn currently works out of three veterinary facilities in Northern Virginia and also does house and farm calls. Florence Szfora, LVT, CCRP Canine Physical Rehabilitation: More than Just PROM Passive Range of Motion is a great way to begin the rehabilitative process for some post-operative patients. Why do we do it and can we be doing more? Physical rehabilitation is a crucial part of our patients recovery process. Explore the simple techniques that can be done in a private practice, the reasoning behind them, and learn how to recognize when to refer patients for further rehabilitation with a specialist. Learn about other techniques and modalities used in a common rehabilitation clinic and the challenges we face on a daily basis. Florence Szforza received her Bachelor s Degree in Wildlife Management at Virginia Tech in In 2004, she received her LVT degree through St. Petersburg Junior College in St. Petersburg, Florida. Florence has been employed by the VA-MD College of Veterinary Medicine since From , Florence managed the small animal surgery department and has gained a considerable amount of experience in caring for both orthopedic and neurological patients, pre and post-operatively. From 2008 to present, Florence has been designing rehabilitation protocols and performing physical rehabilitation for many VTH patients. Florence completed her CCRP certification through the Canine Rehabilitation Certification Program at the University of Tennessee in 2011.
6 William Tyrrell, DVM, DACVIM ECG Interpretation for the LVT This lecture will discuss both common and complex arrhythmias in the dog and cat. Diagnosis and basic treatment for arrhythmias will be reviewed. Dr. Bill Tyrrell is a 1992 graduate of the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech. After graduation, he spent four years in small animal practice in Northern Virginia where he became fascinated with cardiology and echocardiography. He then began a cardiology residency program at the Angell Memorial Animal Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. He completed his residency credentials with Chesapeake Veterinary Cardiology Associates (CVCA) and achieved Diplomate status in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in the College of Cardiology in He is now one of the principal owners of CVCA and helps operate their ten offices throughout Virginia and Maryland. Bill is a past president of the VVMA, NVVMA and the VMCVM Alumni Society. His primary research interests lie in giant breed cardiomyopathy etiology, genetics and cardiac biomarkers.
