BACKGROUND: A.R.S requires the Arizona Board of Regents to establish the Arizona Area Health Education Center (Arizona AHEC) system in the University of Arizona College of Medicine. The system consists of five area health education centers, each representing a geographic area of the state. The centers are: Eastern Arizona AHEC (EAHEC) in Globe-Miami Maricopa AHEC (MAHEC) in Phoenix Northern Arizona AHEC (NAHEC) in Flagstaff Southeastern Arizona AHEC (SEAHEC) in Nogales Western Arizona AHEC (WAHEC) in Yuma Arizona AHEC was established through the National AHEC program in 1984, prior to the 1990 enactment of A.R.S As a sponsored project of the University of Arizona, the Arizona AHEC Program is administered under the direction of G. Marie Swanson, PhD MPH, who is Dean of the College of Public Health and who also holds a faculty appointment in the College of Medicine. A.R.S requires the Board to appoint, among others: A governing board for each of the five centers. Board membership will consist of health care providers and consumers and will reflect the ethnic representation of the center s geographic area. Each governing board will make recommendations to the director regarding health professionals educational needs, local program priorities, and the allocation of system monies. Board members are not eligible to receive compensation or reimbursement of expenses. The requested appointments for center boards meet the above criteria. Contacts: George H.
