Summer School We offer a wide variety of courses from NAU's regular curriculum during a three-week presession and two five-week sessions each summer. In addition, we offer a number of workshops, seminars, institutes, and intensive special-interest short courses. For selected academic courses, we also offer a ten-week summer session. For information about summer sessions (costs, schedule of classes, and application procedures), request our summer bulletin, which is published each February by the Summer Sessions office of Continuing Education. (For information about summer housing, contact the Office of Residence Life at ) Please be aware that if you enrolled at NAU during the preceding year's summer session or for the fall or spring semesters preceding the summer sessions, you don't need to submit additional admission application material for the summer sessions. For more information, contact Summer Sessions, Continuing Education, NAU, PO Box 4117, Flagstaff, AZ ( or ) Interactive Television We are currently offering about twenty-five courses each semester for university credit through our interactive television system. This exciting new method of teaching allows interaction between students and instructor, despite the miles between them, and permits the use of sophisticated visual aids, such as computer graphics, video modules, and pad camera reproductions. We continue to develop additional ways to use this technology to improve educational opportunities throughout Arizona. We have interactive classrooms at many sites, and additional sites are under construction. The control rooms for these classrooms are configured to be "user transparent," and operators using them can move from one to another with complete ease. NAUNet Telecommunications Network This interactive microwave network allows multiple sites to interconnect with one another. Our first instructional sites, in Flagstaff and Yuma, were completed in These were soon followed by sites in Phoenix (Arizona Department of Education and Supreme Court), Kingman (Mohave Community College), Tempe (Arizona State University), Tucson (University of Arizona), and Holbrook (Northland Pioneer College). Sites on the Navajo and Hopi Reservations have just recently been completed, and we plan additional sites in upcoming years. Our system is fully interactive, and we plan to include T-1 data and telephony services on many circuits. 14 Consultation Service NAU provides facilities and personnel for both onand off-campus workshops, institutes, conferences, and other consultation services to educational, business, community, and social organizations in Arizona. Requests for such services should be directed to Continuing Education, NAU, PO Box 4117, Flagstaff, AZ ( or ). Educational Opportunities through Information Technology NAU is providing access to education throughout Arizona and beyond by using exciting technology to link people and programs in ways that have only recently become possible. These services are described briefly in the paragraphs that follow. For more information, contact Educational Systems Development, NAU, PO Box 5752, Flagstaff, AZ ( ). NAULA and the Satellite System The Northern Arizona University Learning Alliance (NAULA) is a voluntary alliance of more than one hundred satellite downlink, cable, and wireless cable sites across Arizona for the delivery of statewide programs. We support NAULA with a C-band satellite transmission (uplink) system, which we completed in 1990, that can transmit to areas covering the contiguous forty-eight states. In addition, we are developing educational programming to make use of this system to reach individual homes, public schools, community colleges, and other governmental entities. Our system is especially promising for bringing people from diverse areas together for educational conferences and for providing regular courses and other educational programming to people in remote parts of the state. For instance, this system brings foreign language courses to areas where on-site instructors are unavailable.

7 NAU IS also a founding member of IDEANET, a nationwide distance education alliance. Production Facilities The center of NAU's communications system is our broadcast-quality television production studio and postproduction facility along with master control for NAUNet-Flagstaff, our campus-wide NAU cable television system, the "feed" to Flagstaff Cablevision, and a satellite reception facility that has Ku-band and C-band downlink (receive) antennas. Statewide Programs NAUNet currently includes sixteen interconnected instructional sites throughout Arizona, and the network continues to grow. As a result, students In many parts of the state can pursue higher education goals without leaving Iheir home communities.
