4 What is payroll? Payroll is the amount money paid to an employee over a set amount of time. Payroll involves calculating total income, employee / employer taxes and voluntary deductions, (health insurance, 401K) to determine an employees net pay and total taxes due. It is critical that payroll is handled in an accurate and efficient manner. The IRS estimates that the average fine for late or inaccurate filings is $850. The #1 reason why merchants outsource their payroll is for tax compliance.
