Carpenter, MD and Kathleen Kerr, MD) Gulf War Illness: Evaluation of an Innovative Detoxification Program. Project underway. Funded by the United States Department of the Defense. ($629,095 total with $68,557 subcontracted to USU) 2010 until Co-Investigator (with Erin Applegarth). Cultural identification, quality of life and perception of mental illness: A cross-cultural study of American Filipinos and Pacific Rim Island Students This study examines the relationships between cultural identity and the perception of mental illness in a cross-cultural study. Duties include supervision of students, data management, and analysis. Funded by Broughton Fellowship ($1500). Co-Principal Investigator/Project Director (with A. Santiago-Rivera, Ph.D.) Biopsychosocial Well-Being Among Akwesasne Residents A multidisciplinary study designed to examine the effects of toxic chemicals upon the mental health of the residents of Akwesasne. This study also examines the importance of culture and quality of life as variables impacting mental health. Duties included budget management, training staff from a different culture using a team approach, assessment management, data management and analysis. Funded by The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences ($100,000/annum/5years) April 1995-present. Co-Principal Investigator, (with A. Santiago-Rivera, Ph.D.) Initial Development of an Interview Protocol for use with Native Americans Responsibilities included conducting interviews, managing a budget and conducting data analyses.
