2 Dear Parents and Guardians, We all want the best for our children. West Alabama offers a growing array of high-wage jobs. Being able to compete for these opportunities will require a clear understanding of the necessary skills and education. In this changing world, what worked best for us may not be the best choice for our children. In today s job market, sixty-five percent of jobs require an associate degree or advanced technical training. The best opportunity for our children may be found in equipping them with necessary knowledge to select an educational option right for them. Choices your eighth grader will make this school year can impact career opportunities for a lifetime. Through dual enrollment, students have the opportunity to take college and technical training courses while in high school. These courses enable them to obtain high-paying jobs immediately out of high school without the burden of college debt. Many companies offer apprenticeships to help fast-track students and develop their career paths. Your student will have an opportunity to explore exciting career paths at this year s West Alabama World of Works (WOW) event. WOW will present real-world simulations of available career options. Each hands-on exhibit will be presented by top employers in our region. By attending WOW, students will learn how to begin building a meaningful career at the beginning of high school. This booklet highlights what it takes to succeed in various industries and lists sample occupations, general educational requirements, and average salaries. Please discuss this information booklet with your children, encourage them to ask questions, and seek additional support. WOW will be held Thursday, October 8th and Friday, October 9th at Shelton State Community College s Martin Campus. Sixty-five percent of all jobs will require an associate degree or advanced technical training. Businesses and industries today need highly skilled employees who show up to work on time, dress appropriately, have excellent communication skills, and can perform in a team environment. In the latest State of the Workforce Report produced by The University of Alabama, the projected worker shortfall between is projected to be approximately 114,000 workers. This shortfall means that your student has tremendous opportunities to obtain successful high paying employment. Making early preparations for education and career pathways is crucial. Beginning in ninth grade, students will develop a four-year plan based on their interests, strengths, and career goals. High school students often struggle to get the kind of experience required for many of today s top career opportunities. This is why the primary focus of career and technical education is to work with local and international businesses in different career fields to ensure students are equipped with the skills needed for lifelong success. Today, students have opportunities to gain these skills through dual enrollment programs, internships, apprenticeships, and on-the-job training. Through dual enrollment programs, eligible high school students may enroll in college to earn high school AND college credits! In fact, some students are receiving their high school diploma AND their associate degree simultaneously at no cost. Many companies in our region offer apprenticeships which allow your student to learn and earn through on-the-job training. Some of these programs include the Nucor Technical Training Academy, Mercedes-Benz U.S. International mechatronics program, McAbee Construction welding apprenticeship, and Premier Electric apprenticeship. Career Coaches are available in every high school to assist your student. These career professionals can assist with career exploration and assessment in addition to guidance regarding college and career choices. They can also help your student with dual enrollment and scholarship applications, college admissions, and financial aid applications. The Career Coaches conduct classroom presentations, coordinate job shadowing opportunities, and arrange for business and industry tours, and schedule guest speakers. 28 CONTACT YOUR CAREER COACH LEANN WILSON Tuscaloosa City Schools Bibb County Schools dwilson@tusc.k12.al.us LADONNA BECK Tuscaloosa County Schools lbeck@tcss.net BETTIE BRIGGINS Hale County Schools Perry County Schools bbriggins@halek12.org MATTHEW VINES Fayette County Schools Lamar County Schools mvines@fayette.k12.al.us Career Coaches can be contacted directly to help your student take advantage of the numerous opportunities available. You may also visit org/workforce.html to learn more about technical training available to your high school student.

29 As you start exploring career opportunities, you ll learn what work experience, training, courses, and degrees are needed for every job that interests you. High School Career and Technical Education Career and technical education is the foundation for the trend toward college- and career-ready education. Successful students in career and technical education have the skills to enter the workforce, enroll in training programs, or excel in a two- or four-year college program. For more information, visit workforce.html. Apprenticeship Learn a craft or trade from a skilled craftsperson or master trade worker through supervised, full-time work that meets Alabama state standards. At the end of your apprenticeship, you ll receive a nationally recognized certifi cate of completion. Community College Affordable community colleges and technical colleges are located in every region of Alabama. Earn a technical certifi cation or an associate degree to prepare you for immediate entry into your career or to launch you directly into a four-year college or university. Four-Year College or University Alabama has many public and private colleges and universities. The Alabama Student Assistant Program, a state-supported and federally-funded grant program, helps support students who want to attend college in Alabama but need fi nancial support. Nearly eighty Alabama schools participate in the program. For more information, visit nancial-aid/college-scholarships/scholarships-by-state/ alabama-scholarships/alabama-student-assistance-program/ Military Service All branches of the U.S. military provide skills training, fi nancial aid for college, and career opportunities in return for three or more years of service. Some people choose the military as a long-term career, while others use it to prepare for college or a career in private industry or public service. On-The-Job Training After earning a high school diploma, some graduates immediately start earning money as an entry-level employee. Through on-the-job training, they are able to learn new skills and gain valuable work experience. Looking Ahead Region 3 Career Centers Thank You to our Education Partners. 30 P.R.I.D.E. of Tuscaloosa th Street Suite E Tuscaloosa, AL T F E pridetuscaloosa@gmail.com Dear Students, Parents, and Guardians, Thank you for your participation in the 2015 WOW Career Expo. The Expo is a great event and provides an opportunity for students to gauge their interests and set a tentative career path to be better equipped for the marketplace upon graduation. One of the biggest issues employers face today is fi nding and retaining qualifi ed candidates who are dependable and remain drug-free throughout their career. Many students and parents do not fully comprehend the truly addictive nature of current legal and illegal substances. Drugs today are considerably more potent and addictive than in years past. In fact, a single use can alter the brain and its functionality for the rest of your life. I encourage students and parents alike to become more educated on the potency and availability of current drugs as well as being aware of the long-term consequences of drug use and addiction. PRIDE of Tuscaloosa provides materials to anyone who would like more information about the drug epidemic our society and our community currently faces. Additionally, PRIDE representatives are available for presentations to parent groups, community and civic organizations, churches, schools, and anyone who wants to learn more about current drug trends. Our goal is to lay a foundation that will help children and adolescents make sound decisions that will conclusively lead to a successful future. For more information, visit our website and follow us on the social media platforms below. On a chosen career path, there will be many obstacles for a student to overcome to ultimately achieve their goals. Drug use and addiction does NOT have to be one of those obstacles. Sincerely, Derek Osborn, APS Executive Director PRIDE of Tuscaloosa facebook.com/prideoftuscaloosa 30
