GCC Mission Glendale Community College prepares students for further higher education, employment and advancement, and successful participation in a global society. ( History 50 Years of Momentum Brief background of institution (year established, etc.): In 1965, a burgeoning city welcomed the first community college in the West Valley, and the second in the newly formed Maricopa Community College District. Housed in temporary facilities at the Camelback and Maryland extensions of Phoenix College, 1,974 students enrolled in liberal arts classes at the new Glendale Community College. By September the following year, the college moved to a permanent, 147-acre campus, accentuated with 226 majestic palm trees that lined the central mall. The palm trees, along with the Spanish-influenced architecture of the original campus buildings, are two GCC icons represented in the official logo. The Northwest Valley population exploded during the 1980 s and 1990 s and with it, the need for affordable higher education. In 2000, the GCC North campus opened at 57th Avenue and Happy Valley Road. A 2004 bond election provided capital funds for expansion and renovation to main campus facilities. The most recent additions, the Public Safety Science and Life Sciences buildings incorporate innovative, hands-on teaching facilities, collaborative environments, and LEED-certified design. Additional class locations were added at NAU s North Valley campus, Valley Vista High School, and the Communiversity in Surprise. Keeping pace with rapid population growth in the West Valley, GCC expanded community business development efforts. The main
2 campus is home to the Chrysler Employee Training Center, the Arizona Procurement Technical Assistance Center, and The Institute for Business, Industry and Technology, partnerships that contribute to the economic vitality of Glendale and Maricopa County. With this driving momentum, Glendale Community College stands at the threshold of its next 50 years. With a focus on sustainability, strategic growth, advancing technology, GCC will continue its commitment to student success, build on a reputation of quality education, and strive to inspire excellence in all who attend. The (A.R.S D.2) pertaining to the Institution having a veteran steering committee has been established. Glendale Community College under the guidance of Vice-President Janet Langley, Ed.D (Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs) has received approval by the College President Irene Kovala to proceed to form and activate this committee. V.P. Langley has gathered the support of several deans and staff along with the Veteran Service Center, with its coordinator Chuck Pierce and Dominic Pressley, President of the Veteran Support Coalition and their board; this includes the Advocate for Veteran Successes, (Chris Spicer). An evaluation meeting is planned on Feb. 5, 2014 to determine the next course of action. Glendale Community College has a stand- alone Veteran Service Center where the personnel have received and are continually being trained on issues concerning our veteran population. We also have an Advocate for Veteran Successes who is creating even more connections to information and community based help. Through our center the veterans receive help in their educational certification process and we can redirect veterans to a variety of other services as their needs are assessed. GCC has Career and Counselling Services, Disability Services, Multicultural Services and other services available for specific issues affecting our military family. We also have Veteran Service Organizations we can refer veterans to if they are in need of further service connected problems that need to be resolved. Through the GCC Veterans Website we also guide veterans on solutions concerning their certification process on concerns related to what chapter they qualify for and check sheets to assist in this process. Also on the website there are links for help in a crisis situation i.e. (National Veterans Crisis Line) and many other links for information and questions with our Q and A. We have also set up our Veteran Support Coalition with meetings twice a month to review problems or successes in their education process. This is a chance to experience other vets in a relaxed environment and share concerns with their peers. Glendale Community College as stated above has a stand-alone facility the (Veteran Service Center) on the campus specific to the needs of veterans and their families. See about the VSC at ( Map ( The GCC website and the Veterans website both provide the location and services of the center, this is located on the first page of the GCC website in the ribbon at the bottom. Glendale s Veteran website is at ( which includes many links like enrollment, employment and careers, Veteran resources, and frequently asked questions. These include areas for the veteran and his or her family. The Veteran Support Coalition and the Veteran Service Center have also established a communication and
13 resources for student veterans, as well as family members (A.R.S D.7). Institution provides peer mentoring and support for student veterans (A.R.S D.5): This must include the provision of counseling services oncampus or referrals to other counseling and crisis resources (e.g. National Veterans Crisis Line, military support programs, VA & Vet Center counseling, community-based counseling). This may include formal and informal mentoring programs (students, faculty/staff, community members, etc.). ENGAGE in the Military/Veteran Community? (A.R.S D.6, D.8) Minimum Required Areas of Focus-please information/examples regarding: information table in our Student Union to further insure our veterans are receiving every bit of information we can provide. This table is manned by a veteran work-study as a way to add a personal touch to our efforts to improve communication and outreach. Glendale Community College, College 101 New Student Orientation (NSO) is a required, 1.5 hour, free class (usually held the week before classes start) that will introduce you to the GCC campus, culture, your fellow students, and academic expectations. During this academic requirement veteran students are introduced to the Glendale procedures and a tour of the campus. A list is collected at these events of all veteran attendees and an addition veteran orientation is scheduled in two separate classes to accommodate schedules to inform veterans of the additional requirements involved with their education process with-in the first month of their classes. In conjunction with all we provide above our Career and Counselling Center, Bruce Thomas from the (Faculty: Counseling Department) is holding a Veterans Transition Group meetings twice a month on the 2nd and 4rth Monday for veterans who would like to express their concerns during this program among their peers.(see attached) The district is also providing their veteran support with programs like the Understanding PTSD Webinar (see attached) sent by the Office of Academic Affairs and other programs being suggested like Veterans Career Transition Program (Syracuse University) (see attached) the entire Maricopa Community College District network is striving to help our veterans and their families. Part of the referral process is provided through other services like the (National Veterans Crisis Line, military support programs, VA & Vet Center counseling, community-based counseling) (Veteran Supportive Campus---section Respond ). This is accomplished through our continued networking and contacts with organizations like the Glendale Stand up for Veterans Event, Student Veterans of America, the Arizona Department of Veterans Services and the Arizona Coalition for Military Families to name a few that have brought veterans and their families needed services. The information collected with these organizations and others is made available through hand-outs, fliers, and one on one sharing. This type of information is redistributed though all of the previous avenues as mentioned prior in this assessment such as our veteran service table in the student union or made available as received to the veteran. GCC communicates to the administration, faculty, staff, and every veteran that this is a team effort and everyone needs to work together. This is being done by training, implementing polices, community out-reach, and a strong one on one attitude toward having Glendale Community College and its veterans who are in transition to complete their educational goals to hopefully secure an active employed part of their community. Further in some cases having some of these same veterans to mentor other veterans to accomplish their possibilities in education through our Veteran Supportive Campus here at Glendale Community College. 14 Institution actively outreaches to military/veteran community, including military installations to provide information on programs, as well as to identify resources that may be of benefit to student veterans (A.R.S D.6). Institution partners as appropriate and needed with public and private sector organizations to strengthen support for and success of student veterans (A.R.S D.8.). Outreach (print, web, etc.) accurately reflects graduation rates for student veterans. Outreach (print, web, etc.) clearly indicates costs, options and responsibilities for financing education. Institution engages in promoting community-based collaborations to allow the private sector to support veteran s resources centers through financial and in-kind gift. Series on Vietnam Veterans the story by Joe Mendoza - Coordinator (Multicultural Center) Local veteran service offices, i.e. Disable American Veterans, Chapter 20, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Wounded Warrior Project to name a few Student Veterans of America ---- GCC Veteran Support Coalition an active chapter GCC Career and Counselling Center on use of Link-in as a networking tool and resume help in job support. Included in this process is the Veteran Service Organizations (VSO) like the (DAV (Disabled American Veterans), Veterans of Foreign Wars, and The Wounded Warrior Project etc.) who has connected with Glendale Community College for even greater outreach provided. GCCs Veteran Support Coalition and Advocate are also continually reaching out the community with fliers, posters. events and phone calls to strengthen our bond to the support of our veteran family. Finally through the Veteran Supportive Campus Certification we will increase our range of information, training and support to other veteran organizations helping Glendale Community College to encourage our veterans through partnerships beyond our campus.
