1 WP2 HUEX 1. Activities in the last 6 months a. Tool developments: a.i. Specification of HUEX processing chain. The HUEX processing chain has as a central component the InterIMAGE platform. The other major components are the interpretation knowledge models for the automatic extraction of human settlements and image processing operators. In principle one knowledge model must be defined for each set of input image types (i.e., sensor specific). InterIMAGE already contains operators that process optical image data, but no SAR specific operators, which should be developed within the next semester. Furthermore, the computational performance issues of the current version of InterIMAGE in terms of processing time and memory consumption will also be tackled during the development of the HUEX Tool. a.ii. Specification of two test cases for the HUEX tool. The first has to do with the extraction of settlements from optical data; and the other, with extracting settlements from SAR data. a.iii. Definition of data sets for validation. The group of PUC- Rio has started to define the actual sites for the test cases, selecting at the same time the image data available for the sites. This work is being supported by the INPE group. At PUC- Rio we are also currently investigating sources of reference data to be used for accuracy assessment (e.g. MODIS land cover product MOD12). a.iv. Creation of the 64bit version of InterIMAGE. During the period 64bit versions of the InterIMAGE system, for Linux and Windows, have been created (the 64bit Windows version is curently in the test phase). This task has enabled the system to work with images of large pixel sizes (size will ultimately be restricted by the primay memory available). 1

2 a.v. Specification of InterIMAGE 2. The group at PUC- Rio has started in May 2012 the specification of InterIMAGE 2. The basic idea is to restructure the system s core in order to have a system that is more flexible, robust and efficient (in terms of image size and processing time) than the actual version. b. Secondment Gianni Cristian Ianelli from UPV Start: 3 May 2012 Duration: 6 months During the period the work plan for the secondment was revised. Currently the secondment is learning about InterIMAGE functions and actually experimenting on programming on InterIMAGE by changing some of its functionality. Additionally, the secondment has started to investigate sources of reference data to be used for accuracy assessment of the test cases proposed for the HUEX Tool. b. Completed secondments. b.i. Secondment Marcel Ziems from LHU Start: 15 April 2012 Duration: 1 month Worked primarily on the adaptation of his PhD research about decision fusion based on the Dempster- Shafer theory to the InterIMAGE and the HUEX Tool.
