6 II. Scientific Report II.A. Results achieved during period 20/12/2006 to 31/01/2007 The Action has achieved in its first 4 weeks the establishment of a strong foundation upon which to start the Action and build in We have established the CoP (see below) to ensure seemless transfer of technology/information between the scientific and stakeholder arms of the Action. We have established heads of all 4 working groups with leading experts that are enthusiastic about the Action. We have designed the website with a launch planned in Feb/Mar 2007 that includes an on-line participant registration feature. Moreover, and most significantly, we have established special task-forces that are charged with expedient and efficient provision of Action deliverables related to the Tasks outlined in the Action MoU. Thus far, 11 task-forces have been formed that will address 8 of the 19 Tasks from the MoU and span all four WGs. These task-forces comprise a limited number of focused participant groups in at least 2 COST signatory countries and will report to the appropriate WG leaders. STSMs will be targeted to these task-forces in 2007, and one is already proposed with application to be submitted to the Brussels office shortly. We have set two joint WG meetings for 2007 with WGs 1&2 meeting at INRA Angers, FR in the Spring and WGs 3&4 meeting in ES in the early Fall. These meetings will include scientific overview presentations, short talks from young scientists, and most importantly round-table discussions to develop the Action Scientific Plan. Also on the agenda for these meetings will be development of EU FP7 projects (cooperation, people, industry); and key active participants have expressed enthusiasm for developing such projects within the COST 873 framework. The next MC meeting is scheduled in conjunction with the Fall WG meeting in ES. A third meeting is tentatively planned for October 2007 by the CoP depending on budget availability. Concrete contacts have been established with COST 853 for Implementation of Technology from that Action into ours; with a Phytosanitary ERA-NET to coordinate future meetings and research activities; and with the European Plant Protection Organisation for information exchange and transfer of technology related to pathogen diagnosis/monitoring (see below).

Dissemination of results Action Related Publications and Reports: None to date Conferences and Workshops: None to date Web site: Site designed, to be launched 02-03/2007 Scientific and Technical Cooperation: COST 853 has delivered a cherry microarray that will be applied in COST 873 for rapidly determining the self-compatibility (reproductive) of varieties. This will enable us to more effectively select cherry cultivars for our screening of disease resistance (WG3) and for incorporating commercially suitable cultivar mixtures in orchards (WG4). A special-task force will be developed in 2007 to steer the screening of cherry cultivars using this chip with a lead at Agroscope Changins-Wädenswil ACW (Switzerland). Thus Technology Transfer and Implementation is planned from COST 853 into COST 873 to further the mission of our Action. Transfer of results: EPPO Bacteriology Panel Official contact with Chair and expression of interest in collaborating, particularly on harmonization of diagnostic/monitoring protocols (contact with D. Caffier). COST 873 promotional material will be presented at the upcoming Panel meeting in Tunis (Feb 2007). Committee of Practioners (CoP) has been established by the MC with a Head (Bernard Blum, Agrometrix AG, Basel, CH). B. Blum is also the Vice-President of the International Biocontrol Manufacturers Association ( This CoP is charged with arranging the smooth transfer of technology from Action scientists to stakeholders (industry, growers, plant protection officers) and the transfer of concerns/interests of stakeholders to Action scientists. The CoP will also take the lead in developing Technology Transfer workshops, perhaps one even in Fall 2007 depending on budget availability in conjunction with the IBMA annual meeting in Switzerland (10/2007).
