2 Certificate in Transport and Logistics The objective of this program is to meet the growing demand for expertise in transport and logistics. The program will provide a basic preparation in the theory and skills required for the students to pursue careers in this field. Admission Requirements To be admitted to the Certificate in Transport and Logistics, students must meet both the academic and language requirements of the program. Academic Requirements: To be admitted to a certificate program: 1) Students must hold a CEGEP diploma (DCS or equivalent) or 2) Students 21 years of age and over who do not have the normal academic background for admission may be admitted as mature students. Students between 18 and 21 who do not have a CEGEP diploma but have at least a high school leaving certificate may be accepted into a qualifying program to be determined by the Department. Formal admission to the certificate program will normally follow upon satisfactory completion of the qualifying program. Students below 18 years of age without a CEGEP diploma (DEC) will not be admitted to a certificate program nor will they be permitted to take courses! Language Requirements: Applicants whose mother tongue is not English, and who have not completed both a high school and a CEGEP program in the province of Quebec, must submit acceptable evidence of facility in English before their application for admission can be considered. 3 Admission Procedures You can apply for admissions to the Certificate in Transport and Logistics online at The application fee is $60 (non-refundable). This fee includes application for evaluation of transcripts of previous education for students requesting advanced standing in a program. You must also provide several pieces of supporting documentation in order for your application to be processed. For more information, please visit: Application deadlines are: February 1 (Spring semester), June 1 (Fall semester), and October 1 (Winter semester). Please note that students who do not register within one year from their date of acceptance will be required to reapply. A Student not wishing to be admitted to the program or who has applied for admission but has still to be accepted may register as a Special student in individual courses on a selected basis provided they have the necessary prerequisites and meet the admission requirements. 4 The Program Recommended but not required prior to entry are the CITT Distribution 1 and 2 courses. The Certificate in Transport and Logistics consists of ten required three-credit courses. Classes are offered once a week for 13 weeks and are generally from 6 to 9 p.m. Courses can be taken in the Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer sessions. Classes in the Spring and Summer sessions may be given in less than 13 weeks. Not all courses are offered every semester. 5 Course Descriptions EDEC 205 Communication in Management 1 Continuing Education: requirement for the EA, AAC, and the Canadian Institute of Management Because this course uses a workshop format, attendance at first class is desirable. Written and oral communication in Management (in English): emphasis on strategies for identifying, analyzing and solving writing and speaking problems. Course work based on academic and professional communication in management. CMSC 101 College Algebra and Functions CMSC 000 Remedial Mathematics or diagnostic test Linear and quadratic functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, applications. Sequences and series, mathematics of finance. Permutations and combinations. Trigonometric functions, radian measure, trigonometric equations, solutions of triangles, applications. MGCR 293 Managerial Economics Requirement for CMA, CGA, I.C.B., the EA of AACI, and the CRA (Formerly ) The course focuses on the application of economic theory to management problems and the economic foundations of marketing, finance, and production. Attention is given to the following topics: price and cost analysis; demand and supply analysis, conditions of competition. BUSA 364 Business Law 1 Continuing Education: requirement for CMA, CGA, the Canadian Institute of Management. This course cannot be double-counted from the Certificate in Management. An introduction to the legal system and basic legal principles affecting business. Tort negligence, contracts, forms of business organization, creditors' rights and bankruptcy. CTPT 205 Introduction to Logistics Introduces aspects of logistics such as: transportation, inventory management, warehousing, materials handling, packaging, customer service and order processing and examines how these activities impact organizations. 6 CACC 520 Accounting for Management This course covers financial and managerial accounting. The course provides an understanding of the various financial statements as well as cost behaviour, cost/volume/profit relationships, budgets, responsibility accounting and relevant costing. CTPT 220 Physical Distribution Systems approach to physical distribution, traffic management, plant and warehouse location, inventory control, information flows and order processing, supply scheduling, total cost planning, organizational patterns. Integrating marketing principles, focusing on problem solving and decision making from the physical distribution perspective. CEC1 206 Transports Economics CEC1 202 Micro Economics Or MGCR 293 Managerial Economics Transportation economics in the location of industry; the market structure of carriers and users. Cost structure of carriers. Supply and demand in transportation prices. Cost-oriented pricing. Economics of discriminatory and administered pricing. Competitive distortions attributable to unequal distribution of subsidies for infrastructure and its maintenance and the unilateral imposition of public duties for government national and regional economic objectives. Review of impact of new technologies. CTPT 341 Transport Law and Regulations BUSA 364 Business Law 1 Law as it relates to all modes of public transportation in Canada; law of the carriage of goods and the rights and liabilities of the carriers, shippers and consignees; the National Transportation Act and the legal consequences of the declared national transportation policy. CTPT 207 Transport Policy CEC1 206 Transport Economics The purpose of the course is to give the student an appreciation of the major broad transport issues and policies facing Canada in the 1990s.
