3 NON MEDICAL HELPER SUPPORT 2014/15 BAND 1 SUPPORT ASSISTANTS CURRENT ROLE DESCRIPTOR PREVIOUS ROLE DESCRIPTOR DESCRIPTION OF ROLE HOURLY RATE (VAT not applicable) Practical Support Assistant Buddy/ Practical Support Initial Support - Assists in orientation to the University and its setting, including early registration and campus familiarisation. On-going Support - Provides practical assistance in academic-related situations including organising course materials and transferring books to and from bags. Library Support Assistant Library Browser Provides assistance in a range of ways, including locating and retrieving materials, collecting and returning books and photocopying relevant sections under direction from the student. Reader Reader Involves either reading directly to a student or reading onto a recording device for a student to listen to at a later point Scribe Scribe Involves writing or typing verbatim from a student s dictation, in a variety of situations usually with the student present. Workshop/Laboratory Assistant Practical Lab Support Assists the student in accessing practical workshop or laboratory elements of their course. May include providing physical support to assist students in organising lab equipment and experiments.
4 Sighted Guide Practical Support Assists students with visual impairments to navigate round and familiarise them with the University campus. BAND 2 ENHANCED SUPPORT ASSISTANTS Study Assistant Mentor Provides regular study assistance for students where frequent organisational support is required. Specific areas of focus can include: Motivation, Time Management and Organisation, Planning, Reader/Note-Taker Mentor, Examination Mentor. Study Assistant Composite Support Provides a combination of support such as Library Assistance, Reader, Practical Support, Reading, Scribing and Study Assistance support as part of a single session. Examination Support Worker Examination Support Worker Exam Reader Involves reading examination questions to a student during an examination. Exam Scribe Involves writing or typing verbatim from a student s dictation during an examination. Manual Note-taker Note-taker Handwritten Involves taking an accurate and comprehensive set of notes during lectures, seminars and formal sessions. Clear, well structured notes will be provided to the student in handwritten format. Manual Note-taker Note-taker - Typed Involves taking an accurate and comprehensive set of notes during lectures, seminars and formal sessions. These will be provided either in hard copy or electronic format (e.g. via ) to the student
5 BAND 3 SPECIALIST ENABLING SUPPORT Specialist Transcription Service Transcription Support Consists of reformatting and transcribing academic materials into an alternative format such as Braille, Large Print or Electronic Format that is accessible to the student BAND 4 SPECIALIST ACCESS & LEARNING FACILITATORS Specialist 1:1 Study Skills Support 1:1 Specialist Dyslexia Tutorial Support Provides individual specialist support for students who have dyslexia, dyspraxia or other specific learning difficulties to facilitate study and develop effective study strategies. These may focus on: Note-taking strategies Reading strategies Writing essays and assignments Revision and exams Time management and organisation Presentations and posters Specialist Mentor 1:1 Mental Health Support Provides support, advice and guidance to students experiencing a range of mental health problems. Assessing how a student's mental health difficulties affect their ability to learn effectively, and suggesting practical coping strategies to help overcome problems All support workers will have undergone recruitment and selection and some basic training. Where further training has been undertaken this is indicated. All support workers are monitored and the support they give is regularly evaluated by the students.
