Getting published in Health Services Management Research Kieran Walshe Editor, HSMR and Professor of Health Policy and Management, Manchester Business School
Overview About the journal history, mission and aims What do we want to publish Submitting your papers some key issues for success Practicalities online submission, the review process and timescales
About the journal Leading research, theory and practice on healthcare organisations and health services management for the international community of academics, researchers, healthcare managers, policymakers and clinicians
About the journal Authoritative international peer-reviewed journal which exists to publish theoretically and empirically rigorous research on questions of enduring interest and concern to health-care organizations and systems throughout the world. Aims to serve an international community of academics and researchers on the one hand and healthcare managers, executives, policymakers and clinicians on the other. Aims to make a substantial contribution both to research and to managerial practice, and particular emphasis is placed on publishing research papers which offer actionable findings and on promoting knowledge mobilisation. The journal has been published since 1988, and is now in its 24th year of production, having published over 560 papers from authors in more than 30 countries in that time.
About the journal Not a generic health services research journal clear focus on healthcare organisations and management International dimension not a UK (or US) journal garnished with a few papers from other countries European focus official journal of the European Health Management Association
Editorial board Jeni Bremner, European Health Management Association Prof Mats Brommels, Karolinska Institute, Sweden Prof Reinhard Busse, Technische Universität Berlin, Germany Prof Jackie Cumming, Victoria University Wellington, New Zealand Prof Graeme Currie, Warwick Business School, UK Prof Huw Davies, University of St Andrews, UK Prof Judith Dwyer, Flinders University, Australia Prof Ewan Ferlie, Kings College London, UK Professor Naomi Fulop, University College London, UK Dr Trish Reay, University of Alberta, Canada
Future directions Increasing volume and quality of submissions Securing an ISI Impact Factor and entry into JCR citation reports Wider access journal bundling agreements, open access publishing Themed issues, supplements, and virtual themed issues
What do we want to publish? Evidence syntheses rigorous, robust and replicable reviews of the existing evidence Primary research reports of substantive empirical studies using a wide range of methodologies Conceptual and methodological developments relevant to healthcare organisations and management
What do we want to publish? Organisational and management focus in areas like... Leadership/governance/accountability Performance/quality/safety/productivity/efficiency Workforce/employment/human resources Organisational behaviour/development/strategy Change/reconfiguration...but not an exclusive or complete list of topics or themes
What do we NOT want to publish? Opinion, anecdote, descriptive accounts of initiatives or organisational developments Me-too empirical papers simply replicating what is already well known, adding nothing Narrowly technical or highly specialised papers with little wider general and international relevance or interest
HSMR 2012; 25(1) Assessing the relationship between volume and outcome in hospital services: implications for service centralization The organizational stress measure: an integrated methodology for assessing job-stress and targeting organizational interventions Safety subcultures in health-care organizations and managing medical error Public violence, staff harassment and the wellbeing of nursing staff: an analysis of national survey data The effects on length of stay of introducing a fast track patient pathway for myocardial infarction: a before and after evaluation Changing organizational structure and organizational memory in primary care practices: a qualitative interview study
HSMR 2012; 25(2) Does the patient-centred medical home work? A critical synthesis of research on patient-centred medical homes and patient-related outcomes Physician attitudes towards chronic disease management in the USA Relationships of hospital-based emergency department culture to work satisfaction and intent to leave of emergency physicians and nurses Competency assessment and development among health-care leaders: results of a cross-sectional survey Assessing governance theory and practice in health-care organizations: a survey of UK hospices Estimating the length of waits: a description of the period lifetable method and comparison with census and event based methods
Before submitting your paper Read the guidance to contributors and mission/remit of journal how does your paper fit? Read papers on similar topics areas in past issues of HSMR what has already been published? Write with an international readership in mind assumptions, focus, scope of literature Follow guidance on paper format, presentation, length, referencing, etc Choose a title that really reflects the content of the paper no rhetorical flourishes or metaphors
Practicalities of submission Guidance for contributors on journal website at All submissions online using Manuscript Central at All submissions acknowledged, and then put through three stage process editorial review, peer review, decision/revision
Practicalities of submission Editorial review fit with remit of journal, is there a realistic prospect of publication 4 weeks Peer review assess scientific quality, relevance and importance/significance and identify revisions 8 weeks Decision accept (often with revisions), revise and resubmit (usually means major revisions), reject Publication then depends on journal timeline
Conclusions Exciting times for HSMR move online, link to EHMA, new editorial board, revised mission Want to encourage new submissions to HSMR and can promise authors fast and fair feedback But relentless focus on remit and mission, and on raising the quality, relevance and importance of published papers
