COURSE SELECTION It is very important for students at Central to select courses wisely. When selecting your courses, please consider the following: 1. Graduation requirements. 2. Your life and career goals. 3. The things you enjoy learning. SELECT CAREFULLY! SCHEDULE CHANGES AND DROPPING COURSES AFTER SCHOOL HAS BEGUN Students have three days to add and drop classes at the beginning of each term. One-credit courses may be dropped (with parental, teacher and administrative approval) at the end of the first of the two terms. Depending on the class, one half credit may be awarded if a passing grade is earned for the first term. INCOMPLETES Grades of I (incomplete) will be assigned for unfinished course work. It is the student s responsibility to meet with the teacher to have the incomplete explained and a deadline set for the completion of the unfinished work. Failure to complete the work by the deadline will result in an F, and no credit will be issued. PROGRESS REPORTS Teachers are required to notify parents at mid-term if students are in danger of failing a course. This written progress report is a warning to improve immediately. Normally a counselor will also be notified, and he or she may schedule a conference with the student

REPORT CARDS AND PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES Report cards are issued to your student at the end of each grading period and are also viewable on Parent Portal. 4 th term report cards will be mailed. If you have a problem with your report card, contact your instructor. Report cards may be held due to fines, unserved detentions, etc. Parent- Teacher Conferences will be scheduled four times a year in the middle of each term. HONOR ROLL AND MERIT ROLL Students with a term grade point average (GPA) of or higher are recognized on the Honor Roll at the end of each grading period. Students with a GPA of to are recognized on the Merit Roll. PARENT PORTAL Parent Portal is a communication tool between school and home. This is a valuable resource to keep current on your student s progress. Teachers update their site on a weekly basis although some courses are not graded until the completion of a specific project. Please be aware that your student s final grade could differ from the Parent Portal information due to unexcused tardies or absences. For more information on Parent Portal, contact Janet Simon at the Aberdeen School District, , or log on to the District website at CREDIT FOR ALGEBRA 1 TAKEN IN MIDDLE SCHOOL Any student who successfully completes Algebra 1, and who passes the end-of-course exam with at least 80%, will be given high school credit. This grade will be recorded on his/her transcript, included in their GPA, and counted toward the 25 credits required to graduate from CHS. GRADING SYSTEM CHS operates on the A, B, C, D, and F grading system with plus and minus marks. Other grades you may receive are: N (no credit), I (incomplete), W (withdrawal) and EX (medical waiver for PE). Each course at CHS is designated as: G = General (open to all students) H = Honors (open to students who plan on furthering their education AP = Advanced Placement (select students) ALT = Alternative (select students) Exceptions to these are noted in course descriptions. Grade points (used in determining your GPA) are assigned based on the chart below. G H AP ALT A+ = A = A- = B+ = B = B- = C+ = C = C- = D+ = D = D- = F =

EARLY GRADUATION Any senior who meets Policy IFKA guidelines may be eligible to graduate early their senior year. A second meeting with student, counselor, principal and parent is necessary to finalize early graduation. OPEN CAMPUS Open Campus is considered available only to those seniors who exhibit the maturity to manage time not scheduled to be in a class. Open Campus is a privilege and can be revoked at any time for a variety of reasons. During Open Campus, students are to be in the library, the Commons Area, or completely off campus. If seniors are not in one of these areas, Open Campus privileges will be revoked. In order to quality for Open Campus seniors must meet the following requirements: 1. Must be in an average of three classes per term for the period that Open Campus is extended to them. 2. Must have earned a 2.5 grade point average the previous term on the weighted grading scale with no F or I on their report card. 3. Must have completed the following parts of Career Cruising by the end of the previous term before Open Campus is granted: - Matchmaker - Ability Profiler - Personal Learning Plan - Career & Life Goals 4. These privileges can only be reinstated by the principal or assistant principal. TRANSCRIPTS In order to have a transcript sent to a college or technical school a student needs to complete a transcript release. This form is available in Student Services as well as in the Registrar s Office. Students who are not eighteen must have a parent sign the form before a transcript can be sent. If an official transcript is requested it must be stamped with the school seal. Transcripts should be sent at the time a student initially applies to a college or technical school as well as at the end of the school year. HONORS COURSES Honors classes are designed for students who intend to further their education. Honors courses are assigned readings of more pages a night and will cover more material in a given class period. If you re ready for this challenge, Honors is right for you. Honors classes are more focused on student-generated and student-led discussion and observations and less emphasis on teacher directed discussion. This doesn t mean you won t participate in class discussion in a general class, but Honors classes put more responsibility on you to make and communicate key observations. Honors courses will require you to have more initiative. You will be given fewer reminders about due dates and more independent work. If you are ready for the challenge of regulating your own time, Honors is right for you

POST-SECONDARY EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES ADVANCED PLACEMENT CLASSES C.H.S. ADVANCED PLACEMENT COURSES Advanced Placement courses are college courses taught at the high school level. AP courses provide intensive critical thinking skills that prepare students for their college experience. These courses also prepare students for national three-hour exams offered at Central High School in May. There is an exam fee for each test taken. Advanced Placement courses may count as two credits toward graduation from CHS but count only as one credit toward the South Dakota Opportunity Scholarship. AP Biology AP Calculus AB AP Chemistry AP English Language & Composition AP English Literature & Composition AP European History AP US History AP and College Admissions: Colleges and universities value students who take the most challenging courses available at their school---for many schools, AP courses are the most advanced courses offered. In fact, 85 percent of selective institutions report that a student s experience favorably impact admissions decisions. AP courses on your transcript show colleges that you are intellectually curious, unafraid of hard work, and capable of learning the knowledge and skills expected of college students. Your AP Exam scores provide colleges and universities with additional information about your ability to succeed in college-level study. Check the admission websites of the colleges that interest you to see if sending your official scores will help support your application. If you would like to learn more about the college application process, click on Get In at How AP Can Help You Save on Cost of College: You probably know that if you earn a qualifying score on an AP exam, you can receive credit for the equivalent course at colleges and universities across the United States and in 60 other countries around the world. Depending on which college you attend, this could mean thousands of dollars saved. Here are some ways that AP can help you save on college that you might not have considered: Students who take AP courses and exams are more likely to graduate in four years, while most students take five or six years, and sometimes even longer, to earn bachelor s degrees at public colleges and universities. This means that the AP students who graduate on time save themselves and their families thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars in unnecessary college costs. Also, AP could increase your eligibility for scholarships. 31 percent of colleges and universities consider a student s AP experience when making decisions about which student will receive scholarships. If you would like to learn more about college costs and financial aid, click on Pay for College at

How to Earn Credit for Your Scores: If you earn an AP Exam score of 3 or higher, chances are you can receive credit, advanced placement or both from your college---most colleges and universities in the United States and institutions in more than 60 other countries grant credit and placement for AP scores or acknowledge AP scores in the admission process. College credit and/or advanced placement can be a big reward for all the hard work you put into your AP courses and exams. Also, when you enter college with credit you ve already earned through AP, you can save time and money. With a head start on your degree, you may have the flexibility to move into upper-level courses sooner, pursue a double major or study abroad. So, How Does It All Work?: The first thing to understand is that each college---not the College Board or the AP Program---makes its own decisions about awarding credit and placement. Most have a written policy spelling out things like the minimum score to earn credit for a given AP Exam, the amount of credit awarded and how credits are applied. To receive credit, you must request that the College Board send your official AP score report to the college of your choice, either at the time of testing or afterward through a score report request. Colleges will usually notify you during the summer about any credit, placement and/or course exemptions you have earned. APEX ONLINE COURSES APEX courses are one semester courses that are available to students who have been successful in the past AP courses. Students may schedule to take corresponding AP exams at CHS in May for a fee. Courses costing $350 each and that represent extensions of the CHS curriculum include: AP Macroeconomics AP Microeconomics AP Psychology AP Spanish Language AP US Government & Politics English Language/Composition US History Statistics Calculus A/B Biology Chemistry English Literature/Composition LEARNING POWER ONLINE COURSES Learning Power: South Dakota Online AP courses are full-year courses available online at the South Dakota Virtual School on a first-come, first-serve basis. 12 PROJECT LEAD THE WAY Project Lead The Way offers a different approach to learning and teaching. Through activity-, project-, and problem-based curriculum, PLTW gives students a chance to apply what they know, identify problems, find unique solutions, and lead their own learning. PLTW curricular programs include PLTW Launch, PLTW Gateway, PLTW Biomedical Science, PLTW Computer Science, and PLTW Engineering, the last of which will be implemented in the fall of 2015 at Central High School. Post-secondary institutions recognize PLTW students in a variety of ways: SCHOLARSHIPS: PLTW students often show increased performance and persistence versus their non-pltw peers. As a result, many colleges and universities award or encourage students to apply for scholarships for PLTW students to attend their institution. (At Augustana College seniors who attended a certified PLTW high school and who completed at least two PLTW courses and earned a grade of B of better in each course are encouraged to apply for a one-time PLTW Scholarship worth $1,000.) ADMISSIONS PREFERENCE: Data show that PLTW graduates often excel and persist at a higher rate than their non-pltw peers. As a result, many institutions wish to offer preference to PLTW students by: 1. allowing PLTW courses to act as one of the required courses for admissions, such as a science or math equivalency course, 2. utilizing PLTW programs or courses as part of the institution s weighted admissions requirements when accepting students into the institution or degree program, or 3. allowing completion of a PLTW program or courses to lead to automatic enrollment to the institution. COLLEGE-LEVEL RECOGNITION: PLTW classes are nationally standardized, project-based courses that prepare students for college-level work and culminate with a student assessment, which colleges and universities can use to determine if a student earns college credit. Some of the ways in which post-secondary institutions recognize PLTW students include: course substitution credit, advanced standing credit, partial course credit, bridge courses, and test-out or challenge exams. (At Augustana College seniors who have successfully completed PLTW courses at a certified PLTW school can apply to receive college credit.) ARTICULATION Articulation is a cooperative effort between South Dakota s high schools and technical institutes (Lake Area Technical Institute, Mitchell Technical Institute, Western Dakota Technical Institute, Southeast Technical Institute). It provides students with an opportunity to receive credit for skills previously learned if they have achieved a B or better in the high school courses and completed them within the last three years. Articulation agreements do not directly award post-secondary credits but help the students by reducing the amount of tuition they have to pay for a particular class. For example, a full year of Electronics at Lake Area Technical Institute awards six articulated credits spread across four classes. This results in the student saving six hours of tuition costs of approximately $ The student still takes the entire class ensuring that he/she becomes familiar with the full scope of the course and any specific terminology or emphasis that is required by his/her program. CERTIFICATION If a student enters a South Dakota technical institute with an applicable certification the student does not have to take or pay for the class that provides the certification. Example of the certifications available include: Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), C-Tech Copper Cabling Specialist, and C-Tech Fiber Optic Cabling Specialist
