4 About GIPE Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (GIPE) is one of the oldest research and training institutes in Economics in the country. Established in 1930, the Institute is registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, and the Bombay Public Trusts Act, The Servants of India Society, founded by late ShriGopal Krishna Gokhale, are the Trustees of the Institute. The primary object of the Institute is to conduct research into the economic and political dimensions of the Indian society, and to provide training to researchers in this domain. Under the pioneering leadership of late Professor D. R. Gadgil, its first Director, the Institute set exalted standards for high quality research, teaching and training in diverse branches of economics. In view of the eminent and sustained contribution of the Institute to teaching, training and research in Economics since its inception, and in recognition of its potential to emerge as a centre of excellence in the field of teaching and research in Economics, the University Grants Commission, in 1993, granted to the Institute the status of a Deemed to be University. 2
5 Pioneering GIPE The main thrust areas of research at the Institute are Agricultural Economics, Rural Development, Population Studies, Input-Output Studies for Planning & Development, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Monetary Economics & Finance, Public Economics, International Economics and the study of Economics of East European countries. Various Union Ministries and public funding agencies including the Government of Maharashtra, and private Foundations such as Sir Dorabjee Tata Trust have financed research at the Institute. In 1954, the Union Ministry of Food and Agriculture established the Agro Economic Research Centre (AERC) at the Institute. The Rockefeller Foundation contributed a substantial grant for research in Rural Demography. In 1964, the Union Ministry of Health, with a view to strengthen and expand research in Population Studies, established the Population Research Centre at the Institute. These initiatives were followed by endowments from Ford Foundation for research and training in the areas of Planning and Development, mainly in the area of Input-Output Studies. The Planning Commission has also instituted the 'Professor D.R. Gadgil Chair in Planning and Development' to promote teaching, research and informed debate on all issues relating to Planning and Development. In 1962, the University Grants Commission recognised the Institute as a Centre of Advanced Study in Agricultural Economics, and in 1964, as a Centre of Advanced Study in Economics. In 1977, the UGC, as a part of its Area Studies Programme, established at the Institute a Centre for Study of Economics of East European Countries. In the same year, the Reserve Bank of India instituted a Chair in Finance at the Institute. In 1989, the Ford Foundation funded establishment of a Research Chair and a dedicated section in International Economics to carry out research activities in International Economics and related subjects. Since its inception in 1930, Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics is renowned for its pioneering initiatives in qualitative research in diverse areas of economic theory and practice. Its studies on Poverty, Rural Employment Guarantee Schemes and Cooperatives were instrumental in shaping public policies, and in formulating economic plans at local and regional level. GIPE is the one of the handful of research institutions in the country to carry out research on demographic problems facing the country. Teaching Programs The Institute was initially affiliated to University of Bombay, and, in 1949, became a constituent recognised Institute of University of Pune. 29 Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics M.Sc. Agribusiness Economics 27
30 Agri Business Economics: The M.Sc. Agribusiness Economics program prepares students for careers in the agribusiness sector, both as officers in agribusiness organizations, and as economists in agribusiness related research organizations. The academic content of the program has three major modules: an economics module, a management module, and an agribusiness module. The economics module equips students with the core economics principles as well as the advanced quantitative techniques that are the basic tools used to analyze questions of business and policy. The agribusiness module complements these tools with a broad grasp of the current theory, data, and issues (both business as well as policy) surrounding the agribusiness sector in India. The management module provides students with an overview of essential managerial skills such as accounting, finance, marketing, supply chain management, risk management, and insurance. The three modules together provide students with the necessary theoretical knowledge to embark on a successful career as officers in agribusiness organizations, or as economists in agribusiness related research organizations. In addition to numerous field trips during the program, students hone their practical skills in a 2 month internship with leading sector organizations at the end of the first year of the program.
