1 April 2015 A Special Monthly Newsletter for Caregivers EDUCATION CORNER Care A Gram April, 2015 Karen L. Gilbert RN MS Vice President, Education and Quality Assurance Inside this issue: Caregiver self-care 1 Caregiver self-care We address caregiver stress and caregiver burden frequently. This repetitive message is vital! As the American Medical Association continues to remind us, caregivers that do not get help and support are 63% more likely to pass away within 4 years than non-caregivers of similar age. It is essential that caregivers take care of themselves in order to continue caring for their loved ones. This is not selfish, nor does it diminish your devotion to your loved one in any way. What are some of the ways in which caregivers can pamper themselves and recharge their caregiving batteries? Schedule time for something you enjoy outside of caregiving: window shopping with friends, a cooking class, a haircut, a massage, an hour or two in coffee shop with a good book, a long walk Is there a favorite chair (indoors or outside) where you can escape with a magazine for a while? Caregiver self-care Continued April Holidays Family Nurse Consultants Support Group Schedule April Special Events Creative Corner 6 Begin to envision things you would like to do in your life after caregiving: learn a new language, travel, a new career, volunteering, adult education classes Simply thinking or even daydreaming about what you want from life is therapeutic, and begins to form a foundation for your life after caregiving. Identify your support system! Reach out to your Family Nurse Consultant as often as you need. Identify those family members or friends who pathize and LISTEN to you when just need to vent! Allow family members or At Alzheimer's Community Care Character Counts! The mission of Alzheimer s Community Care is to promote and provide specialized, quality, compassionate care within a community-based environment to patients and caregivers living with Alzheimer s disease and related disorders. Sponsored by Alzheimer s Community Care, Inc. and the State of Florida Department of Elder Affairs, State of Florida Agency for Health Care Administration and the Area Agency on Aging Palm Beach/Treasure Coast Inc.
2 Page 2 April 2015 Continued.. empathize and LISTEN to you when just need to vent! Allow family members or friends to help you, to supervise your loved one while you take a much-needed break even if they do not do things exactly the way you do! Maintain your regular medical and dental appointments! Caregiving can exact a physical toll that is not always obvious on the surface high blood pressure, for example. Maintainting your medical checkups will identify such issues early before they do real damage. You are so very special! You deserve the best support as you care for loved one AND yourself! As written by Gail Sheehy in her 2010 book Passages in Caregiving : There is living through caregiving There is coming back after caregiving There is life after caregiving In an effort to lower the number of mailings we do each month, Alzheimer s Community Care would ask that if you have access to a computer and you are able to have this publication ed to you, please let your Program Manager know. The publication is in full color and is normally received before anything send in the post. Thank you.
