Business & Knowledge in the Climate-KIC The first Gothenburg Symposium 12th June 2014, Lindholmen
Climate -KIC The Climate-KIC is Europe s largest public-private innovation partnership focused on climate change. The community consists of dynamic companies, the best academic institutions and the public sector. The Climate- KIC connects partners and delivers innovations to the market with the goal to provide business opportunities with carbon reduction. Moderators: is the first Swedish partner in the Climate-KIC and during 2014/2015 the partnership will be expanded under the auspices of the Nordic Co-location centre into Sweden. Professor Greg Morrison and Climate-KIC Dr Mats Bergh CEO Johanneberg Science Park
Welcome session The aim of this session is to introduce the Climate-KIC and the importance of Climate-KIC in Gothenburg and for Chalmers. The session introduces the overall Climate-KIC structure and importantly the newly established Nordic Co-location centre which will expand to 5-8 new partners in Sweden in the near future. (Chalmers being the only partner in Sweden at present) This session will comprise formal presentations followed by prepared questions from the moderators. Karin Markides President, Anneli Hulthén Mayor of Gothenburg Professor Mary Ritter OBE CEO Climate-KIC Susanne Pedersen Director Climate-KIC, Nordic
Three pillars for the Climate-KIC The Climate-KIC has three pillars (education, innovation and entrepreneurship) supporting all activities to promote the knowledge-innovation community and with leads within each Co-location centre. In this session the Directors of each pillar provide their perspective on Climate-KIC activities and opportunities. This session will comprise very short introductory presentations with prepared questions from the moderators and the possibility for a limited number of audience questions. Ebrahim Mohamed Director of Education, Climate-KIC Dr Daniel Zimmer Director of Innovation, Climate-KIC Hero Prins Director of Entrepreneurship, Climate-KIC
The new Climate- KIC investment in flagship programmes: Building Technology Accelerator and HSB Climate-KIC recently announced that it is supporting a 100 million Euros investment in four new flagship programmes to accelerate its efforts in climate change mitigation and adaptation. The focus in this session will be on two of the three flagships (see end of the document for details) that Chalmers is involved in. The session will comprise two parts where the vision for each flagship will be presented, followed by a discussion on business and knowledge generation. Limited questions from the audience will be allowed depending on time. Dr Anaïs Sägesser Director Climate-KIC, Switzerland Katrin Hauser BTA Manager, Climate-KIC Switzerland Sanna Edling Project manager HSB Living Lab, HSB Associate professor Angela Sasic and Climate-KIC
The new Climate- KIC investment in flagship programmes: Building Technology Accelerator and Johanneberg District Factor 10 The second part of the session on Climate-KIC flagships will focus on Smart Sustainable Districts. Chalmers is an active partner in the flagship and together with societal and industrial partners has proposed Johanneberg as a flagship district. The vision is to create the world s first Factor 10 district. Assistant professor Leonardo Rosado and Climate-KIC Agneta Hammer Director, Gothenburg City Planning Birgitta Olofsson Vice President, Tyrens AB Filip Elland Sustainability Coordinator, Castellum AB
Coffee break The 5th IPCC assessment report and the Climate-KIC In April this year the Climate-KIC, Europe s largest publicprivate innovation partnership focused on climate change, responded to the latest IPCC report on climate change and called for greater collaboration between the private, public and academic sectors to develop the solutions we need to tackle climate change. In this session we consider the role of Climate-KIC activities and in meeting the challenges laid down by IPCC. This session will comprise short formal presentations followed by time for prepared questions and questions from the audience. Professor Richard Templer Director Climate-KIC UK Professor Holger Wallbaum and Climate-KIC Professor Filip Johnsson Dr Mohammed Hoseini Norwegian Public Roads Authority
Future change makers in the Climate-KIC The Climate-KIC offers students and young researchers the possibility to join summer schools, lectures and workshops within a leading European network of universities and research institutions. Further, the next generation can join internships in leading international companies. This session considers the possibilities and demands of future change makers through short presentations and questions from the audience. Assistant professor York Ostermeyer and Climate-KIC Anna Larsson Chalmers Students for Sustainability Jun Kono Climate-KIC PhD
Closing session and final remarks This session rounds off the meeting with a joint presentation by Professor Greg Morrison and Susanne Pedersen on future aspects of Climate-KIC, who to approach and details concerning the expansion of the Colocation centre into the Nordic countries. Professor Greg Morrison Chalmers University of Technology and Climate-KIC Susanne Pedersen Director Climate-KIC, Nordic
Appendix: Climate-KIC flagships Three Climate-KIC flagships where Chalmers are involved (from a press release for the European Business Summit 2014) Exploiting CO2 as a resource Under the leadership of Bayer MaterialScience, the enco2re programme will further broaden the approach for CO2 re-utilisation, connecting technology leaders as well as leading European universities and institutes in order to leverage a broad utilisation of CO2 as feedstock for chemical value chains. Bayer MaterialScience has successfully demonstrated the feasibility of utilising CO2 as polymer feedstock and has kicked-off the next phase of planning an industrial scale plant. Turning CO2 into high-value products, as well as evaluating the required infrastructure, the programme will contribute to further decoupling energy and resource consumption from industrial growth. Christoph Sievering, Head of Strategic Energy Management, Bayer MaterialScience commented: Bayer believes in the potential of industrial symbiosis and open innovation. Climate-KIC offers a unique umbrella for further leveraging our ambitions to turn value chains into closed carbon cycles. The Climate-KIC enco2re flagship is an industry initiative for enabling CO2 re-use. Climate-KIC drives innovation by connecting industry and technology leaders and convinced us with its elaborate 3-pillar concept of innovation support, educational programmes and start-up acceleration, Sievering said. Other Partners of the enco2re project include: Imperial College London, Delft University of Technology,, Laborelec, Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies, RWTH Aachen, GDF Suez, TU Berlin, AkzoNobel. Sustainable urban environments The Smart Sustainable Districts initiative will help some of Europe s highest profile city district developments become global exemplar projects testing smart, sustainable systems for replication in other urban areas world-wide. Initially working with four pilot districts from a wider collaborative network of 12, the project will bring together some of the most advanced innovations from Climate-KIC s network of over 200 partners. The project is led by Imperial College; Institute for Sustainability; TU Berlin; TNO; TU Munich; and Utrecht Sustainability Institute. Ian Short, Chief Executive of the Institute for Sustainability, commented: Climate-KIC s investment will not only help identify and mainstream a wide range of new products, technologies and services, but reinforce Europe s position as leading the climate change adaptation and mitigation agenda. Smart Sustainable Districts focus is on how we make change at scale against the complex background of cities and their existing infrastructure. Activity is designed to deliver against ambitious targets in four pilot districts, while capturing valuable lessons on how we can adapt new approaches for much wider application across Europe and beyond, said Short. Climate-friendly homes and offices The Building Technologies Accelerator will bring together multidisciplinary living lab teams across Europe to address the climate impact of new building technologies and accelerate the potential of low carbon products and services in the built environment. By the end of 2014, a range of new prototype technologies will be ready to be launched across Europe s building sector. David Goatman, Partner, Head of Sustainability and Energy at global property consultant Knight Frank, stated: Climate KIC is making an unprecedented investment into climate innovation via these four flagship programmes. These four flagship investments will deliver game-changing CO2 reductions and catalyse the development and up-scaling of new low carbon technologies across Europe. This in turn creates new jobs and economic growth across multiple countries. The flagships bring together a wide range of private, public and academic organisations in a unique combination to develop new goods, products and services that address the climate change challenge, said Goatman. Other partners for the Building Technologies Accelerator include: Delft University of Technology; ETH Zurich; EMPA; Chalmers University of Technology; Knight Frank; and IVE Spain.
