(see ) internet in a box : web based resources scraped and placed on hard drive for access via any intranet (LAN) Now with 50M pages of content with focus on Health Care worker training and also Zambian primary and secondary school curriculum and materials Next two slides: picture of eg in trainees hands and also picture 12V version (solar powered) with tablet Zambian Ministry of Education ordered 600 eg s in Feb 2014 to be placed in all primary and secondary schools in Zambia!!!

27 International Internships India, Jamaica, Zambia, and Travel Funds Students who elect to complete an international internship may apply for the Dr. Moses Sinkala Travel Scholarship The Center has cultivated relationships with partners internationally; thus, students may also complete for selective placement with our partners in India, Jamaica, and Zambia International internships must comply to SOPH standards and typically include an 8-10 week stay abroad

Foundation of global scholarly work at UAB Mentor students in the Sparkman Fellows program Meet twice a year for Works-in-Progress session to solicit feedback from one another on international scholarly projects

29 Community Organizations Sparkman Fellows The Sparkman Fellows Program is intended for highly motivated and engaged students seeking to enhance their understanding of global issues in a stimulating learning environment. Fellows will have the opportunity to engage with UAB faculty in a collaborative environment outside of the classroom as well as be mentored by faculty in the Sparkman Scholars program. A list of 2014 Fellows may be viewed here

30 Community Organizations Sparkman Community Partners There are numerous organizations and individuals based in Birmingham, Alabama involved in global health or development efforts around the world. The goal of the Sparkman Community Partners and Friends program is to provide a forum for collaboration and knowledge sharing to better leverage resources and increase impact. Members will be kept abreast of seminars, activities, and endeavors hosted by the UAB Sparkman Center for Global Health. Furthermore, participants may be engaged in collaborative initiatives with faculty, staff, and students from UAB, as opportunities arise. The Sparkman Center will also host an annual gathering for participating organizations and individuals to showcase their work and share best practices.

31 Community Organizations Friends of the Sparkman Center Similar to the Sparkman Community Partners program, the Friends of the Sparkman Center program aims to engage globally minded individuals. Those living in the Birmingham area who have or intend to do any of the following within the next six months are encouraged to join: Worked or volunteered abroad Studied internationally Engaged in advocacy

32 Peace Corps Partnership Masters International Peace Corps Master s International (MI) students graduate with a unique combination of an advanced degree and two years of substantive professional experience in an international setting. The benefits of the MI program at UAB include in-state tuition rates for all MI students and a one time $1,500 scholarship. MI students can also compete for the School of Public Health funds when they apply for UAB financial aid. Additionally, the Peace Corps service fulfills the MPH internship requirement and MI students may earn three credit hours while in the Peace Corps.

33 Peace Corps Partnership Coverdell Fellows This program is available to returned Peace Corps Volunteers (RPCVs) who pursue graduate studies in a variety of subject areas. More than 40 universities currently participate in this program, offering financial assistance to RPCVs, and opportunities for them to use the knowledge and skills they developed during their overseas service during their graduate work as they participate in service learning projects with underserved communities.
