5 ASBESTOS / PRODUCT Asbestos is widely used in Serbia, while in most developed countries, with the exception of Canada which is a major manufacturer, its use is prohibited. Asbestos in Serbia is rife in the building used for making pipes and roofing, as well as insulation in ships. 5
6 ASBESTOS / PRODUCT Cobest factory was founded in 1935 in Beogadu called YUGOSLAV Asbestos AD, in cooperation with the German company Feodor BURGMANN Asbestos-und Packungswerke DRESDEN. The factory produces seals for general purpose, mass and isolation materials, asbestos cords and tapes and other related insulation materials. Asbestos AD dislocated from Belgrade to Mladenovac in 1946, where the needs of future production completed construction of production facilities of 3000 m2. The factory was granted a new name industry of asbestos products - YUGOASBESTOS, and those with 10 workers produce 30 tons of finished products (asbestos braid, metaloplasti nih seals, terpeninskih pasta, etc.).. Factory Yugoasbestos apply new alternative fibers in exchange for asbestos in May 2000 changed its name to Cobest, which also gives priority environmental program production. Cobest 6

15 FUTURE STEPS Legislation: adoption of regulations: - The waste management containing asbestos; - RULES restrictions and prohibitions on the production, circulation and use of chemicals that represent an unacceptable risk to human health and the environment with deadlines for implementation that will lead to delays in production, especially of Electric Power Industry of Serbia, where there is a greater use of asbestos. Management of asbestos in terms of asbestos as a substance or mixture 1. prohibition of exploitation of asbestos 2. ban the use of asbestos in products 3. ban on asbestos imports Asbestos kills: Protect yourself! 15
16 FUTURE STEPS Waste Management, which consists, contains or is contaminated with asbestos - National implementation plan for the management of asbestos and waste which consists, contains or is contaminated with asbestos: a state historic amount of asbestos waste, an inventory of asbestos used and the waste that consists, contains or is contaminated with asbestos, review possible procedures for waste management which consists, contains or is contaminated with asbestos and the proposal Selection process: storage in the mines, treatment and disposal to landfill, export. As part of the plan is necessary to analyze all possibilities of managing asbestos waste from an economic, social and economic as well as technological aspects. 16
