2 Asbestos Government Regulations South Africa Asbestos Regulations Act (Act No 85 of 1993) Regulation Gazette No 7276 no R "Asbestos that forms part of a structure of a workplace, building, plant or premises (Asbestos cement sheeting and related products) must be painted or sealed with a protective coating to limit the release of Asbestos dust, combat weathering and inhibit growth of lichen or moss." All work has to be strictly done to a work plan, approved by the department of labour. A notification of Asbestos work to be done must also be sent to the department of labour What is Asbestos? Asbestos is a naturally occurring product that was mined for, up until 2002 in South Africa. It was used in many different products because it is fire and chemical resistant. There are primarily three types of Asbestos, Chrysolite (White Asbestos ), Crocidolite (Blue Asbestos ) and Amosite (Brown Asbestos ).Exposure to Asbestos dust is dangerous and can cause a variety of potentially fatal diseases.
