PVC treatment in Germany, Denmark and Sweden Regulations in Europe Vinyl 2010 A voluntary initiative of the PVC industry towards sustainable development in European Union. The main guidance actions: Utilization of tones of postusage PVC waste in the year Utilization of 50% of the detectable available PVC wastes (window sections, pipes armatures etc.). Research and development for new utilization technologies Pipes Cutters Materials Window and door profile Shutters and blinds Paneling and cladding Ducts for electrical cable

PVC treatment in Germany, Denmark and Sweden Technology There are two principal ways to recycle PVC: Mechanical recycling: PVC waste is ground into small pieces that can be processed into new PVC compounds ready for extrusion or lamination. Feedstock recycling: PVC waste is broken down into its chemical constituents, which can be used again to make PVC or other materials.

PVC treatment in Germany, Denmark and Sweden Technology (mechanical recycling) Technology (mechanical recycling) Pre-sorting. Granulating: post-consumer plastics are ground and washed. Flotation tank: if the different kinds of plastics are not sorted, they are separated in a flotation tank (density of the different plastics). Drying: clean plastic pellets must be dry because dampness decreases the quality of the end product. Melting: heat and pressure melt the plastic in an extruder (each type of plastic has a different melting point). Filtering: the molten plastic is forced through a fine screen to remove any contaminants that may have eluded the washing cycle. Pelletizing: the strands are cooled and chopped into pellets to be sold.

Asbestos removal in UK Construction Waste Management in Sri Lanka The Health and Safety Commission (HSC) has announced an amendment to the Asbestos (Prohibition) Regulations 1992, which affects the importation of products containing asbestos and which came into force 15 August 2003 in UK (Health and Safety Commission, 2006). Types of Asbestos Blue asbestos was used in sprayed or limpet asbestos on the underside of roofs or on girders and steel work. Brown asbestos - is found in many common building materials e.g ceiling tiles, lagging etc. White asbestos - this is the most common type of asbestos found in buildings. Asbestos related diseases Asbestosis - an irreversible scarring of the lungs that causes a decrease in elasticity. An industrial disease that was associated with past high levels of exposure of all types of asbestos. Lung cancer - increased incidence in those working with asbestos. All types can cause the disease with some evidence of more danger from blue and brown. Mesothelioma - cancer of the lining of the chest or abdominal wall. Again, evidence of increased risk from exposure to blue or brown asbestos fibers with the disease being triggered from low or short exposures to blue or brown. Diffuse pleural thickening - a nonmalignant disease affecting the lung lining.

Asbestos removal in UK Technology Regency International Group (UK) has developed a new technology asbestos conversion. 1. Loading 2. Shredding 3. Chemical bath (dewatering) The main process steps: 4. Furnace (the rest of the moisture removing) 5. Rotary kiln (1200 degrees, one hour) 6. Ejecting 7. Sealing

Conclusions and suggestions Conclusions The mechanical recycling used in PVC treatment in most European Countries. At present chemical, thermal and mechanical procedures for the fiber destruction of asbestos are used. Suggestions drawing up strategies and including C&D waste into their waste management plans; monitoring and controlling waste flows and waste disposal options; creating a legal framework and regulatory tools; assisting in the elaboration and diffusion of technical tools; using financial instruments; putting waste owners and collectors/recyclers in contact with one another; favouring the creation of suitable infrastructure; and playing a demonstrative and awareness-raising role.
