(1999): Gall midges (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) of Hungary. - Annls hist.-nat. Mus. natn. hung. 91: Abstract - The present gall midge fauna of Hungary comprises 332 species. Lasioptera rubi causing galls on stems of Rubus idaeus and other Rubus-species is the most common species. During investigation in 1988 and species were found from which 22 are new to the fauna of Hungary. The average number of 29 species per one locatity was relatively high. About 50% belongs to European, 30% to Euro-Siberian, 16% to Mediterranean and sub-mediterranean, and 4% to Holarctic species. Kochiomyia kochiae (KIEFFER, 1909) is the only representative of Pontic-Pannonian elements and Oligotrophus szepligetii KIEFFER, 1909 is a typical Pannonian species. Five Mediterranean species, viz. Orseolia cynodontis KIEFFER et MASSALONGO, 1902, Aplonyx chenopodii STEFANI PEREZ, 1908, Asphondylia dorycnii (MÜLLER, 1870), Asphondylia massalongoi RÜB- SAAMEN, 1893 and Asphondylia scrophulariae SCHINER, 1856 reach in Hungary the most northern limits of their distribution areas. Long-term changes in population dynamics were analyzed. Janetiella oenophila (HAIMHOFFEN, 1875) and Dasineura violae (F. Low, 1880) belong to disappeared species. 18 species are pests of agricultural plants. Economic importance of gall midges is discussed. With 5 figures. INTRODUCTION Hungary is the last country in Central Europe where the summarization of data about the gall midge fauna has not been done until now, although Hungary is noted for such processes on higher level of performance for the whole order of Diptera occurring in the Palaearctic Region (Catalogue of Palaearctic Diptera, Manual of Palaearctic Diptera). Such summarization of data reflects the present stage of knowledge and, therefore, it is necessary to do it after a certain period of time lasting perhaps several decades. In the past, data about gall midge species occurring in the territory of Hungary were included usually in reviews of gall-inducing insects and mites (MOESZ 1938, BALÁS 1941). AMB RUS was the first to give a review of gall midge species independently on the level of family Cecidomyiidae (AMBRUS 1963A, b). Since that time many years elapsed in which plenty of new data were gathered, mainly by AMBRUS. Now it is inevitable to make a summarization of the present stage of knowledge on the gall midge fauna and to evaluate

the gathered data from various points of view. And it is what we propose to do in the present paper. After a short outline of the history of researches dealing with gall midges, we present a list of gall midge species found in Hungary. We join also results of our investigation which we made in northern Hungary in 1988 and in the Mátra Mts in Then we evaluate the gall midge fauna of Hungary and compare its composition with faunas of other European countries. Attention is paid also to problems of the economic importance of gall midges in the territory of Hungary. HISTORY In Hungary researches dealing with galls caused by various animals were started to develop at the end of the 19th century with the zoocecidological activities of SZÉPLIGETI. He published (SZÉPLIGETI 1890, 1895) the first data about the occurrence of gall-causing animals in the territory of Hungary, together with descriptions of about 30 galls caused by undetermined animals which he found mainly in the environs of Budapest. Some of them were later described (or named only) by KlEFFER. The up-to-date knowledge about gall-inducing insects and mites were compiled by SZÉPLIGETI (1900) and KERTÉSZ (1902, 1903). SZÉPLIGETI (1900) mentioned 82 gall midge species from Hungary. The important French entomologist and specialist in Cecidozoa, J. J. KlEFFER, named three species of gall midges in honour of SZÉPLIGETI, viz. Janetia szepligetii KlEFFER, 1896, larvae of which cause galls on leaves of Quercus cerris; Dasineura szepligetii KlEFFER, 1909, whose larvae develop among deformed leaves on the vegetative tip of Campanula rapunculoides; Oligotrophia szepligetii KlEFFER, 1909, the larvae causing pustule galls on the leaves of Acer tataricum. The descriptions of several gall midge species are strictly associated with the territory of Hungary by the type-locality, e. g. Contarinia subulifex KlEFFER, 1897, from leaf galls on Quercus cerris, Contarinia cotini KlEFFER, 1909, whose larvae transform the flower buds of Cotinus coggygria into galls, both found at Budapest. KERTÉSZ (1989) described Asphondylia ruebsaameni, the larvae of which cause galls on the fruits of Ferula heuffelii. ACZÉL (1942) described Contarinia lentis, whose larvae transform the flower buds of Lens culinaris into galls. MÖHN (1968) described Lasioptera hungarica, the larvae of which develop inside the stems of Phragmites communis. In the 20 th century, five researchers contributed important knowledge about the occurrence and distribution of galls caused by various insects and mites in the territory of Hungary. MOESZ (1913) made a list of galls collected by SZÉPLIGETI and later compiled the results of his own investigations in his work "Die Gallen Ungarns" (MOESZ 1938). BÁLÁS in his ten contributions made reference to the occurrence of galls induced by insects and mites in St. Gellért Hill (BÁLÁS 1938a, 1939b), in the northernmost part of Hungary, at Komárom (BÁLÁS 1939c, 1941b, 1943) and in the southernmost part (BÁLÁS 1941a) and elsewhere (BÁLÁS 1939c, 1941b, 1943). He also paid attention to galls occur-

ring on plants in gardens (BALÁS 1938/?, 1941a, 1948). His knowledge about galls was summarized in his book (BALÁS 1941). GYŐRFI (1940, 1955, 1956) studied insects associated with forest trees. He mentioned the following four gall midge species, viz. Kaltenbachiola strobi, Plemeliella abietina, Clinodiplosisstrobi and Winnertzia conorum, among pests developing in spruce cones in the environs of Sopron. Also the larvae of Contarinia marchali were found in the seed of Fraxinus excelsior. ERDŐS (1957a, b) investigated the insect communities of Phragmites communis and later (ERDŐS 1962) of Calamagrostis epigeios. He discovered a new gall midge species, whose larvae develop in large numbers inside reed steins, without causing any visible signs and named it "Thomasiella massa" but did not describe it. MÖHN (1968) described this species as Lasioptera hungarica based on larva only and this name is valid. AMBRUS in his 30 contributions (AMBRUS ), of which the last three were published after his death, brought many new data about the occurrence of galls of cecidogenous insects and mites in various parts of Hungary. He collected galls in environs of Budapest (AMBRUS 1957), in the most western part at Sopron (AMBRUS 1958), Kőszeg (AMBRUS 1961), at Vendvidék (AMBRUS 1963c), in the broader environs of the lake Balaton (AMBRUS 1964/?;, in the Bakony Mts (AMBRUS 1964a, c, 1968a, 1979/?), in the Mátra Mts (AMBRUS 1975), northern part of Hungary and in lowlands along the river Tisza, in southern part near Szeged (AMBRUS 1962, 1971/?). He investigated also the gallinducing insects and mites at several arboretums: at Kámon (AMBRUS 1960/?), at Szigliget on the shore of the Lake Balaton (AMBRUS 1968/;, 1978), at Tiszakürt near Kecskemét, on the river Tisza (AMBRUS 1971/?), at Alcsút in the Vértes Mts (AMBRUS 1974), in the Botanical Garden of Vácrátót near the river Danube, northern Hungary (AMBRUS 1971a) and in the Hortobágy National Park (AMBRUS 1981). AMBRUS also studied the biology of several gall midge species which caused injury to several cultural plants (AMB RUS 1964e, 1965a, 1967, 1972, 1973, 1995). The present collection of galls which is deposited in the Hungarian Natural History Museum in Budapest includes several thousand specimens of plants damaged by various gall-inducing mites and insects, mainly by gall wasps (Cynipidae) and gall midges (Cecidomyiidae). The gall collection was established in 1912 when SZÉPLIGETI donated his collection of galls as a gift to the Natural History Museum. Later also MOESZ, BALÁS and AMBRUS gave their collections to the Museum and their gifts, including a very rich material of galls collected in various parts of Hungary, enlarged significantly the gall collection deposited in this Museum. The galls of gall midges form the substantial part of this collection comprising several thousand items. STUDY AREA The territory of Hungary includes square kilometres. The larger part is formed by the Pannonian lowland which is divided by several mountain groups, viz. Bakony, Vértes, Gerecse and Pilis, into a larger part called Alföld extending in the southern part along the rivers Danube and Tisza with their tributaries and the smaller part called Kisalföld in the northwestern part. The mountain Kckes, 1015 ma. s. 1. in the Mátra Mts, is the highest peak of Hungary. The largest lake

of Central Europe, Lake Balaton, 106 m a. s. 1., of 591 square kilometres, extends in the western part, and the Fertő (Neusiedler See, 115 m a. s. L, 320 square kilometres, in the westernmost part at the boundary with Austria. The country has a typical continental climate with hot dry summer, with the highest known temperature of 41.3 C and with a relatively cold winter. Mean year precipitations are mm. About 15% of the territory is covered by mixed forests of Pinus, Fagus sylvatica, several species of Quercus and also by a foreign floral clement, Robinia pseudoacacia. From biogeographical point of view, according to UDVARDY (1975), the territory of Hungary belongs to the Middle European Forest Province and to the Pannonian Province including the plains along the river Danube in the Carpathian Basin covered with secondary steppe floral associations. No regular research investigating the occurrence of gall-inducing insects and mites was made on the territory of Hungary, rather specific areas were selected and investigated such as the surroundings of lakes, Balaton and Neusiedler, various mountains and arboretums. In August 1988 we investigated the gall midge fauna at 19 localities in the northern part of Hungary, in the Börzsöny Mts, in the Pilis Biosphere Reserve and its surroundings (Fig. 1) and in 1997 at three localities in the Mátra Mts during the course of IUFRO Conference at Mátrafüred. MATERIAL AND METHODS We summarized all data about the occurrence of gall midges which were obtained by about twenty researchers who collected galls in various parts of Hungary during period of The results are compared to those carried out in the Czech Republic, particularly the qualitative and quantitative occurrence of gall midge fauna in the area of northern Hungary in 1988 and The dislocation of localities is given in the Fig. 1. Method of collecting is described in the paper of SKUHRAVÁ ( 1994). We evaluated all occurrence data of gall midge species occurring in the territory of Hungary from the zoogeographical point of view using the method of zoogeographical analysis according to SKUHRAVÁ (1987). The frequency of gall midge species in Hungary has been evaluated according to the number of papers which dealt with the occurrence of particular gall midge species (so called number of citations). In such considerations one citation includes either one or several localities where such species was found by a particular author. Data gathered by Hungarian researchers in a relatively long period of time, of almost one hundred years, were analysed, compared with those about the occurrence of gall midges ascertained in the Czech Republic, the Slovak Republic and in Hungary in 1988 and Such comparison made it possible to deduce the long-term changes in the population dynamics of several gall midge species in Hungary. The economic importance of gall midges was evaluated based on citations given mainly in the journal Növényvédelem which is devoted to problems of plant protection and in the publication Abstracts and bibliography of Hungarian plant protection (SZEMESSY ).

RESULTS List of species By each species, the following data are given: the host plant species where larvae cause galls; name(s) of authors, who found the species, with publication date. After a break sign, all localities where the species was found during our investigations in 1988 and 1997 are given. Each species new for the fauna of Hungary is marked by an asterisk before the species name. Finally, after a break sign, it is indicated wheather the species is a pest, and at least, the frequency of occurrence is given using the following abbreviations: sol.
