3 THE BOTANICAL GARDEN OF THE DEPARTMENT The Botanical Garden of the Department of Botany and Plant Physiology, Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences of the at Gödöllő was established in 1959 in order to help practical botanical education. It is situated on the slopes of the Gödöllő Hills (47 36' N, 19 21' E) at an altitude of 220 m above sea level. Meteorological data: average temperature: January -2,4 C (average min. of January: -16,0 C) July: 19,9 C (average max. of July: 32,8 C) yearly average precipitation: 560 mm. The characteristic natural vegetation of the territory is Aceri campestri-quercetum roboris, developed on a generally calcareous and sandy alluvial soil with about patches of clay. The total area of the garden is about 6 hectares. It includes a 2 hectares of natural forest of cool, continental forest vegetation of hornbeam mixed maple woodland, which is an exlusive speciality of the Gödöllő Hills and which has a national importance. A similar area of plots of herbaceous plants has been kept for scientific research. The garden includes a collection of agricultural plants (about 120 species) and a phylogenetical systematic collection (approx. 600 sp.). The latter contains mainly native Carpathian species. These two collections include herbs and protected plants as well. The recognition of herbs, shrubs and trees is also the subject of education. Presenting the endangered native species for the students is considered to be one of our main objectives. The garden contains some ornamental annuals and perennials as well as the most commonly planted ornamental shrubs in Hungary. A special collection of Carpathian Gramineae, Cyperaceae and Juncaceae is under construction. At present the Botanical Garden holds altogether 1200 plant species. A further planting programme is being established with material collected from various natural habitats. Laboratories of ecology, ecophysiology and the only "Global Climate Change and Plants Long-term Experimental Station in Eastern Europe operate in the premises of the botanical gardens (Ecological). The Gödöllő Botanical Gardens is an essential criteria and means of gradual education (24 subjects) and the Plant Ecology-Ecophysiology Ph.D Programme of the department. The catalogue of our seed collection (Index Seminum) has been published every year since the establishment of the Botanical Garden. It includes seeds from the botanical garden and from natural habitats. This activity gives the opportunity to maintain a seed-exchange partnership with more than 250 botanical gardens all over the world. Acknowledgements: In activity of botanical garden was ensured by GREENGRASS EU Framework 5 project (EVK2-CT ), CARBOMONT EU project (EVK2-CT ), Széchenyi Agoeceology national project (OM-00236/2002), Hungarian Scientific Research Foundation (OTKA , OTKA T22723) and Hungarian Academy of Sciences Research Group (1009) projects (granted to Z. Tuba). 3
