1 Sociology 5083 Methods of Field Research Fall 2009 Tuesday 2 4:50 Room 329 Main Instructor: J. Gaber, 220 Main ( ), jgaber@uark.edu Office hours: Monday and Friday 1 to 3, or by appointment Description An introduction to research strategies including intensive interviewing, participant observation fieldwork, (small group research strategies), content analysis, historical analysis, and comparative research. Emphasis on the practical aspects of designing and executing research involving multiple methods of data gathering and analysis. Objectives The class is organized around four objectives. (1) introduce students to the shared ontological vista inherent in all qualitative investigations; (2) expose students to a series of qualitative research techniques; (3) provide the opportunity for students to try their hand (or eye, or ear) and apply a qualitative research method (or two) in a real life data gathering experience; and, (4) allow students to develop a more complex multi data and multi method research approach. Special Note to Students Academic Honesty o All students are required to execute their own work. Group projects are not allowed. o Proper citation is required. If another person s complete sentence, syntax, key words, or the specific or unique ideas and information are used, one must give that person credit through proper documentation (source: Auburn University, Student Academic Honesty Code, Title XII, Chapter 1200, Definition, ). 1
