2 PREREQUISITES/ CO-REQUISITES/EQUIVALENTS None COURSE DESCRIPTION A clear understanding of, and breadth of knowledge regarding, both the theoretical principles and concepts of Information Systems (IS), and the ability to apply these concepts and frameworks to today s managerial challenges. An understanding of the role of IS in managing organizations, and in helping organizations achieve greater effectiveness. Conceptual models and practical applications of IS in organizations are featured. An introduction to business processes and how Information Technology (IT) enables businesses to function more effectively. The course director will teach related materials from the textbooks, websites, and academic/business journals. This is an interactive class. Students participation is highly encourage for better learning outcomes. Various videos and case studies will be discussed in class. At the end of the semester, students will have the ability to draw a schematic overview of Information Systems and related issues and concepts. This course is design in a way to support students in their career decision making. COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES By the end of this course students will demonstrate: - Knowledge of various types of Information Systems - How to plan and design a basic Information Systems - An understanding of different perspectives and aspect of Information Systems - An understanding of the online applications of Information Systems - The ability to recognize new business and research opportunities in Information Systems - The ability to present IS related project/research - The ability to critique IS related business case studies - The ability to evaluate and compare Information Systems in the market METHOD OF ASSESSMENT ASSIGNMENT VALUE DUE DATE Class participation 5% Ongoing Assignment #1 (individual) 15% Thursday, May 19 th BI group project presentation 15% Thursday, June 4 th IS design group project presentation 15% Tuesday, June 16 th IS design group project write-up 20% Tuesday, June 16 th Final Exam 30% Thursday, June 18th Total 100% MGT 3061 YA Summer I
3 PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENTS 1. Class Participation - students are encouraged to interactively participate in class. The first 20 minutes of each class will be assigned for paper/product review by students. 2. Individual assignments - there is one individual assignment for this course. Depends on the course material, the assignment will be around whitepapers, IT products/solutions, or similar. 3. Business Intelligence group project - groups of four students are required to conduct a research on Business Intelligence solution and report the result of analysis via a presentation on June 4 th. This assignment will be thoroughly explained on May 28 th. 4. Information System design group project - groups of 3 students (same groups as for BI project) are required to work on an IS design project. Each group must prepare a write-up and a presentation for this project. A thorough introduction to the aforementioned project will be covered May 21 st. 5. Final exam - a final exam will be taken based on the materials covered in class (textbook, papers, case studies, videos, etc.). When sending an to the instructor, make sure to put MGT3061YA as the subject. 2. Final Examinations. Students who fail to write final examinations must provide satisfactory evidence of illness or extenuating circumstances AND must have the approval of the Dean for a makeup exam. Work commitments, holidays or traffic are not considered legitimate reasons for missing an exam. For unsubstantiated missed final exams that are not approved for makeup by a Dean, a grade of F (0 marks) will be given. Deferred final exams can only be written at times set by the school and instructor. Please note that if a final exam deferral is granted, the date will be set by the instructor and department. Students who fail to write a deferred final examination must provide satisfactory evidence of illness or extenuating circumstances AND must have the approval of the Dean for a makeup exam. 4 3. Conduct of Examinations: The instructor may articulate regulations for late entry to and early exit from the examination room. Instructors may also prescribe or restrict materials that may be used during the exam. No material aids including such items as: mobile phones, computers, or other digital devices, may be brought into the examination site without prior approval from the instructor. Please see additional examination policies in the 2015/2016 University Calendar, page Academic Dishonesty and Plagiarism: Academic Dishonesty and Plagiarism will not be tolerated and will automatically result in a zero grade for the submission. Any student caught plagiarizing may also be subject to additional University sanctions. The University of Lethbridge subscribes to an electronic plagiarism detection service. Students may be required to submit their written work in electronic form for plagiarism checking. 5. Student Conduct: The University s policies are described in the calendar and all students are expected to read, familiarize, and comply with them. Special care should be taken to understand the Student Discipline Policy for academic and non-academic offenses as listed in part 4, sections 4 through 8 of the 2015/2016 Academic Calendar. Students will respect the basic standards of intellectual integrity, including, but not limited to, refraining from plagiarism, cheating or duplicating someone else s work. In addition, students are expected to take an active role in encouraging other members of the academic community to refrain from academic dishonesty, and are asked to advise the instructor if they are aware of any such violations. This provision applies to any work submitted as a group project. CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS Attendance - Please endeavour to attend all classes. If you are unable to attend class, please let the instructor know as soon as possible. If you are late to a class, please be discreet upon entering the class. Be aware, however, that you are still responsible for the material covered during the class. Assignment Submission - Unless otherwise specified, assignments must be submitted electronically by the start of class on the date due. Assignments that are late will have 1 mark deducted per day to a maximum of three days. Thereafter, a grade of 0 will be assigned accordingly. Note that this assumptions might be modified later when each assignment is introduced. Use of Electronic Devices - You may use electronic devices during class at your discretion, except during examinations, guest lectures, and your fellow classmates presentations.
