Lesson 71: Going to the Opera Hi! How are you today? Today s lesson is about Going to the Opera. Let s make learning English fun! Ders 71: Opera ya Gidiş Exercise 1 Vocabulary and Expressions (Kelime Bilgisi ve İfadeler) Directions: Listen and repeat. Öğretmeninizi dinleyin ve tekrar edin. Vocabulary and Expressions aria(arya) dynamics(dinamik/canlılık) Examples Solo aria is the heart of the opera. The dynamics are always changing: there are slow and silent songs and then very fast and loud ones! duet(düet) overture(uvertür/giriş müziği) cast(oyuncu kadrosu) incredibly(akıl almaz derecede) perhaps(bir ihtimal/belki) Duets are usually about love. An overture is what an opera starts with. Andrea Bocelli will be in the cast! Opera is incredibly beautiful. Could you come along perhaps? 1
Exercise 2 Dialogue Practice(Diyalog Çalışması) Directions: Read the dialogue aloud with your teacher. (Açıklama: Diyaloğu, öğretmeninizle birlikte yüksek sesle okuyun.) Adam sees Lisa reading a poster on the wall. Adam: What are you reading? Lisa: Hey, Adam. I am reading a poster about a new opera. Andrea Bocelli is in the cast! Adam: I am so unfamiliar with opera. Yet, even I have heard of his name. He is a singer from Italy, right? Lisa: You ve got it right. He is incredibly good. I have been listening to his songs for a long time. Adam, do you want to come together with me perhaps? Adam: I d like to, But I know nothing about opera! In the beginning of the opera there is some sort of soundtrack, right? Teach me! Lisa: Yes. It is called an overture. It usually describes the mood of the whole opera. Adam: Oh, I see. So generally it prepares spectators for the storyline? Lisa: Yes, it does. And then there it goes opera has arias. They are like opera s songs. They can be sang solo or in a duet... The dynamics are always changing throughout the opera. Adam: It doesn t seem so difficult. I guess I am just unfamiliar with the terms. 2
Check your understanding: Answer the following questions. 1. What was Lisa reading about? 2. Does Adam know opera terms? 3. What is the role of overtures in operas? 3
Exercise 3 Practice Questions(Çalışma Soruları) Directions: Practice answering the questions with your teacher. Choose your favorite answer between A and B. (Öğretmeninizle karşılıklı olarak sorulara cevap vermeye çalışın. A ile B arasından size uygun olan yanıtı seçin.) 1. Have you ever been to an opera? A. Yes, many times. I adore it. B. I was there once. It was a school fieldtrip. 2. What is your favorite opera? A. I love The Magic Flute. B. My favorite opera is Carmen. 3. Do you think operas are for everyone? A. No, I think only some people find it interesting. B. Yes, if they watch them for three times! 4. Have you ever heard about Andrea Bocelli? A. A lot, she is known all over the world. B. I ve only heard her name. 5. What is your favorite part of opera? A. It is the overture. Overtures are so precise! B. I think it is the aria of the main character. 6. Do you have friends who like opera? A. Probably not. Or at least I don t know about it. B. Not that many, but I have some. I don t think opera is that popular nowadays. 4
Exercise 4 Conversation Questions(Konuşma Soruları) Directions: Take turns with your teacher in answering the questions. (Açıklama: Öğretmeninizle birlikte sırayla sorulara cevap verin.) 1. Do you like opera? Why? 2. What are some famous operas that you have heard about? 3. Do you think that opera is only for rich and intelligent people? 4. Do you like duets or solo arias more? Why? 5. Would you want to become an opera singer if you had a good voice? Why? 5
