3 MLK Celebration to host Freedom School coordinator MCC Program set for Jan. 15 in McCain Theater The 1964 coordinator of the Meridian Freedom School will be the keynote speaker at the College s Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Celebration Program. The program begins at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 15, in the McCain Theater. Admission is free and a reception will follow. Levy, reared and schooled in New York, worked at two careers after graduation from Queens College/CUNY. He taught social studies in a West Harlem junior high school and then third world studies in the Queens College SEEK Program. He later left classroom teaching to work as an organizer in the electrical manufacturing and health care industries. After retiring, he became involved in civil rights archival and preservation work. During , he served as special assistant to the president of Queens College for the Civil Rights Movement 50th Anniversary Commemoration Initiatives. He writes for and regularly speaks to high school, college and teacher groups about the movement and its relevance to today s issues. Levy is married to Celine Keating, a fiction writer whose novels center on ethical concerns. This annual event, which celebrates the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, will feature readings from winning essays by local middle school students, music by the MCC Concert Choir and the MCC Gospel Choir and the presentation of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Program Scholarship Award by the Charles Young Family. Rhonda O. Smith, MCC Adult Basic Education recruiter and TAACCT advisor, is the chairman of the College s MLK Celebration Committee. page 3

4 SPEAKING Want to join wellness? To join wellness, please send Wade Heggie a completed form by and the $3 fee through campus mail. The Wellness Committee will be sending more information about events that will be held this semester. For more information, contact Heggie, at extension, at 763. Your help is needed Each legislative session, MCC is assigned two weeks during which the College is asked to send people to Jackson to talk with our legislative delegation. It is an opportunity to put faces with the issues on which lawmakers will be voting this year. Of course, the most important is the Mid-Point Funding. A law was passed several years ago that requires the Mississippi Legislature to fund community colleges, on a per student basis, at the mid-point between K-12 and IHL. Even though the law is on the books, the funding has never materialized.. Any MCCer whol would be willing to travel to the Capitol to let their voice be heard on this and other issues, contact Al Mitchell, at extension 802. I would like to be able to take at least five to six people on each day. Our first week is Feb. 3-6, said Mitchell.
