Welcome, Previous Minutes Discussion, and Roll Call OLD 1. Increasing Committee Participation NEW 1. Educational Presentation: Grief and Grieving Situation/ The NVP currently has three standing committees that are experiencing poor participation. The NVP endeavors to schedule a 45 minute educational presentation on topics pertaining to end of life care for veterans. Discussion/Alternatives (Summary) Rick Missell began the meeting by welcoming all in attendance to the meeting. Previous minutes were approved and roll call was completed. After much discussion on the topic, Rick suggested disbanding the current committees for a six month trial. This action would necessitate the need to create a work group to plan the October 2011 annual meeting. Rick Missell introduced Tom Smith, Aseracare Hospice-Omaha Bereavement Counselor. Tom stated that he has been in hospice bereavement counseling for one year and has over 10 years experience in counseling with mental health patients. Tom presented information on the bereavement process, including phases of grief, common grief responses, four tasks of grieving, anticipatory grief, complicated grief, and bereavement interventions. Tom informed the group of many key points on bereavement including: 1. Grief is a normal and natural process 2. The more the significant the loss, the more None-Informational The group agreed to disband all three current subcommittees. The topic will be discussed in six months, during the June 2011 meeting. A work group to plan the annual conference must be created during our February 2011 meeting. None-Informational HVPhandoutFeb2011.pdf Jennifer Eurek and Rick Missell Review the workgroup process 1

Tom suggested utilizing the services of Teddy Bear Hollow when helping children work through the grief process 9. The one year anniversary of the death, birthdays, and other holidays can be very difficult for those who are grieving 10. Finally, the caregivers and other hospital staff may need grief support as well Tom thanked everyone for the opportunity to speak to the group.
