What are some key trends?* People expect to be able to work, learn and study wherever and whenever they want to. The technologies we use are increasingly cloud based. virtually unlimited memory browser-based software that is device independent 5 * NMC Horizon Report 2012 Higher Education Edition
What are some key trends?* The world of work is increasingly collaborative, driving the way that student projects are structured. The abundance of resources and relationships made easily accessible via the Internet is increasingly challenging us to revisit our role as educators. 6 * NMC Horizon Report 2012 Higher Education Edition
What are some key trends?* Education paradigms are shifting to include on-line learning, hybrid learning and collaborative models. There is a new emphasis in the classroom on more challenge-base and active learning. 7 * NMC Horizon Report 2012 Higher Education Edition
Some questions (longer term) To what extent will bricks and mortar buildings continue to be required? Governments, students and parents will see savings in on-line education. If part or most of a class happens on-line, schools will need fewer classrooms but require More connectivity Longer operating hours (24/7) Different arrangements with faculty Increase in course credit for prior learning. DIY U. (In Quebec, the RAC (La reconnaissance des acquis et des compétences) 8
How might the role of the teacher change? Guide on the side Create, organize and moderate courses Serve more as a resource person, mentor and coach Member of a PLN (personal learning network: the entire collection of people with whom you engage and exchange information, usually online) 9
How might the role of the teacher change? My job as an educator is not to disgorge knowledge. My role is to set the parameters, get everybody engaged and in their places, and just ride it like a freight train. I learn as much as they do. -David Vogt, Director, Digital Learning Projects, UBC 10
Discussion Question In small groups discuss what you think the 2 or 3 most significant differences that will distinguish the classroom of 2020 from today. Consider this from the perspective of the student the teacher the infrastructure 11
A road-map will help us make decisions in the short term. 12
