1 President s Greeting Welcome to the Spring semester at Palomar College, one of the largest comprehensive two-year colleges in the state. We offer over 250 degree and certificate programs; there is something for just about everyone. Whatever your academic goals transferring to a four-year college or university, earning an associate s degree, learning a new skill, or training for a new career we have classes and programs that meet your needs and interests. 2 PALOMAR COLLEGE CREDIT CLASSES SITES DISTANCE EDUCATION FLEXIBLE SCHEDULING Palomar College Class Schedule How to plan your classes Credit Classes All Palomar College credit classes, regardless of where they are taught, are alphabetically arranged by subject (English, geology, math, etc.) in the Credit Classes section of this book. Courses taught at the Education Center/Sites are listed again in the Center/Sites section. Online and video courses are listed in the front Credit Classes section of the schedule, as well as in the Distance Education section. Course Numbers Courses numbered 1-49 are remedial or college preparatory courses, do not apply toward an associate degree, and are not intended for transfer to another community college or four-year college or university. Courses numbered apply toward the associate degree but they are not intended for transfer to a four-year college or university. Schedule Options At Palomar, we offer various schedule options so you may build your schedule of classes around family and work commitments or according to what best suits your lifestyle. Palomar s schedule options include, but are not limited to: Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday Morning, afternoon, or evening One or two evenings a week 8-week session 12-week session Internet (online), Video Self-Paced Independent Study Any combination of the above options Time Commitment For each unit of credit, students should plan to spend three hours per week between class time and study time. For example, a one-unit lecture class meets one hour per week, with an additional two hours per week of study time outside of class. A three-unit lecture class meets three hours per week, with an additional six hours per week of study time outside of class. The number of hours is prorated for short-term and summer classes. Remember to meet with a counselor who is prepared to be your travel guide throughout your stay at Palomar. Noncredit Courses Noncredit courses provide the community with life-long learning opportunities. Classes include English as a Second Language, health and safety, citizenship, and classes for persons with disabilities. In some programs, noncredit courses can assist students to transition to credit courses. Noncredit classes are taught by qualified instructors and are offered at the San Marcos campus, the Escondido Center, and locations throughout the community. They are linked classes that are designed to be taken together by the same group of students, creating a common cohort or community. Each course is graded separately. What are the benefits of a Learning Community? Tutors specifically assigned to your individual class. Students who participate in learning communities often complete more units and earn a higher GPA than students who do not. How do I enroll in a Learning Community? The following courses in each group are linked and must be taken concurrently. To participate, you must enroll in every course in the group that you choose. Place all classes in the group into your online "shopping cart." Click "enroll" to be registered in each of these classes. 5 Learning for Success LEARNING COMMUNITIES: Innovation in Education Algebra 2 N 1 Learning Communities Spring 2015 Students enrolled in Algebra 2 N 1 will accelerate from Math 50 to a college level class in one semester. This course is designed to condense a year of developmental math into a single semester. To enroll in this learning community, add Math 47A, Math 47B, and Math 50 to the shopping cart.
