One of our projects was to get in touch with local businesses, visit them and report back to the group. Some were hesitant: You want us just to call up businesses, tell them we re business students from Europe and ask if we can come visit them? They re not going to want to spend time with us. I remember the professor saying, Well, just try it. See what happens. We tried it. And we got loads of contacts and loads of doors opened for us just by asking. People were amazed at how open the culture was there, and how willing they were to invest an hour of their time. In my country there is a fear that people who invest in your business are going to take it over. But after my IESE experience I became quite liberated in terms of opening up my company to new investors. While I was in the program I decided to approach the largest French manufacturer of office seating, Sokoa SA of France, about a joint venture in Nigeria. This was my first test of the theory I learned in school. I used my proposed venture with Sokoa for my business plan in our entrepreneurship course. My entire class was able to review what I wanted to do and my professor of entrepreneurship could give an opinion about it. Sokoa agreed to my plan on the condition that I be CEO of that company.
