Senior Project Proposal: Web Design By Adam Peterson Carson High School AP Literature Al Mr. Macy October 19,2013
Page One: Task Analysis and Timeline 1. Describe your project, including what you plan to do and what you plan to accomplish. Be as specific and concrete as you can be. My senior project will focus on creating a website for Bordewich Bray Elementary School, one of the schools in the Carson City School District. I have contacted the Principal at Bordewich Bray, Mrs. Karen Simms, and she expressed interest in having a website for her school. I will be meeting with school district administrators to get the site approved and designed. The majority of this project will be spent on my own, working on outlining, designing, creating, and implementing the website. My plan right now is for this website to include a calender of school events, profiles on teachers, and other pages that may be requested by administrators. 2. What will be your product or your hands-on learning? The finished product will be the website I create. The hands-on learning will be extensive, given that this is the first time I have ever accomplished a separately hosted website. While I have made many individual web pages and practiced creating websites, I have never created a website for an individual or group. fact that I can do this for a school that needs a website is a great service I can provide to the community. The 3. Task Analysis: List all the steps you must take and the tasks you must complete to fmish your project. Include the number of hours you think each step will take and the approximate date you plan to have that part of the process completed. I " - Task ICompletion I Hours I Meeting with Bordewich Bray Administration 11125/ Working on Website 02/10/ Various Other Meetings with Administration 02110/ Data Collection (pictures, calenders, etc.) 12/10/ Meetings with Mentor 02/10/ Total Projected Hours 25.0
Page Two: Project Cost List all materials and resources that you will need to complete this project including the estimated cost for each item listed. You will be responsible for funding your project and will need to make sure that you are willing to spend the amount of money needed to complete your intended project. Resource / Material Cost Web Hosting (monthly fee) $ Domain Name (monthly fee) $ Total Projected Cost for Project $_2_0_.0_0 I understand that Carson High School will not fund my senior project and that I have freely chosen to undertake this project with its associated costs. /' v~ ~ /2013 Signature
Page Three: Obstacles and Learning Stretch List and discuss at least three difficulties you might encounter with this project. How do you plan to solve each of these problems? The first difficult I may encounter in my project is cost. If the school district does not want to fund the hosting of a new website, it will be more difficult to maintain the site. Ifthis problem arises, the new site for Bordewich Bray can be hosted through an existing site the school district already has, like carsoncityschools.com at no cost. The second issue that may arise is my incomplete knowledge of web coding. If the administration asks me to do something in the creation that I do not know how to do, I can meet with my mentor or find a solution online. There are many free online services such as codeacadamy.com that provide solutions and help in various coding languages, including HTML 5 and css. The final difficulty that I may encounter is a change in administrators' goals for the site. If they decide that they no longer want a site, it would be difficult for me to accomplish my project. While this issue is unlikely, in talking to Mrs. Kelley, Eagle Valley Middle School also expressed interest in having a site. If Bordewich Bray decided they no longer wanted a website, I would simply change the site to another school in the district. Explain how this project is a learning stretch for you. Indicate specifically what you expect to gain and how. While I have created web pages before, I have never made one for a group. This is a learning stretch because I get to see a new side of website design I have never seen before, the client side. Every web site I have ever created I have done based on what I wanted it to look like and what I wanted it to accomplish. Having to base my website on what others want it to look like and what they want the function to be is going to be completely new to me. In addition to this, most websites I have created have had made up "filler content." This means since the website was only made for practice, no real content was provided or need to be acquired. For this new website, real content will have to obtained, formatted, and input into the website so that it is both ascetically appealing and functional. The final learning stretch will be the hosting of the site. All sites I have created I have uploaded through senatorweb.net. This means I have never had the opportunity to independently create a hosted website. This will be an entirely new skill I will have to learn in order to accomplish my project. My mentor, Mrs. Kelley, will be able to help me with this item.
Page Four: Mentor Information Form Senior's Name: Adam Peterson : 10/20/2013 Mentor's Name: Sherri Kelley Home Phone: (775) Cell Phone: (775) Work Phone: (775) skelley@carson.ki2.nv.us This form should be filled out by the Mentor: What is your expertise in the area the student is studying? Teacher at Carson High School for 11 years teaching Web Design and Flash. Part-time Instructor at Western Nevada College, teaching Web Design, Flash and Graphic Design. How long have you known this student and in what capacity? I have known Adam for 4 years as his Web Design teacher and SkillsUSA advisor. When you reviewed the proposal with the student, what advice did you give himl her about the calendar plan? We talked about the planning process. Unique requirements when working with the Carson City School District. Adam can look at other elementary school web sites on the Internet to get layout and content ideas. Then he needs to coordinate with school personnel and get feedback on what they want. Keep track of meetings for journal entries. What advice did you give himl her about the cost analysis? The total will be minimal. Adam can use the software in the classroom and in the Tech Center Pods. There is also a 30 day free trial version he can use. There will be a small cost for the Portfolio. In what way would you change or modify the project OR what problems do you foresee the student might have? Creating a Web site has many parts that needs to be planned and created, therefore don't wait till the last minute to complete the project. Also backup everything.
