2 The Menu Bar Menu Bar [lefthand end] This is always along the top of the screen unless you are in Full Screen mode In this example: the Finder is showing In this example: the application Pages is showing Finder 1 LaunchPad 2 Mission Control 3 Dashboard 4 Stickies 5 App Store 6 Contacts the little light under any icon means that it is actually open 7 8 Menu Bar [righthand end] This is always along the top of the screen unless you are in Full Screen mode It shows some useful OSX system preferences Bluetooth 1 WIFI 2 Sound Volume 3 Time Machine 4 Battery Charge 5 Keyboard Preferences 6 Logged-in Username 7 Date 8 Time 9 Spotlight Search Notifications 7 Folders 8 Trash The Dock You can drag any application from the Applications folder by its icon to show up in the Dock Similarly, you can drag any Folder icon to the right side of the Dock - note the small line separating the applications from folders and the Trash To remove them you may drag any Dock icon out and it will disappear in a puff, however, the original application or folder always remains in it real location The Dock The Dock This is always along the bottom of the screen unless you are in Full Screen mode It shows OSX applications, Folders, and the Trash The Finder Icon Is always at the very left in the Dock Clicking it once will open a new Finder window The Trash Icon Is always at the very right in the Dock When its icon appears to have paper in it it means it has files within the Trash ready for removal. They are removed when thetrash is emptied. Clicking the Trash icon once will open it and show its contents

3 The Finder Documents The Finder The Finder is an application that is always running that allows you to see all the contents - files, folders, applications, etc. - within your imac Above is a Desktop view of the Finder, without any windows showing Below is a Desktop view of the Finder, with one Finder window showing and a Pages application window is also showing just behind it locating Documents created - like word processing documents - should be saved to the Documents folder Likewise, pictures to the Pictures folder; movies to the Movies folder, etc. It is useful to temporarily save to the Finder Desktop but after use storage in the appropriate folder is essential An alias can be made of any document (or other items, even folders) and used on the Desktop to allow easy access, if required Keeping many files or folders on the Desktop may slow the imac down naming Documents or Folders can be renamed at any time by selecting the object s name : first select the object then press the Return key to highlight the name To alter just a part of the original name : click within the object s highlighted name using the mouse, then type copying Copy any object by holding down the Option key and dragging OR Copy by using the Command key and pressing C Then using the Command key and V you can paste a copy in any location removing To delete a file/ or folder simply drag it to the Trash, then empty the Trash A quicker method is to select the object to be trashed then hold the Command key and press the Delete key - this will move the object directly to the Trash printing To print a document hold down Command key and press P If only a small dialog box appears you can enlarge it - to see many more options - by using the Show Details button special text Shortcuts using the modify keys : Command Option Control Shift are available within most applications and learning common ones can save time Examples: Option key + semi-colon key produces a correct ellipsis : Option key + e key produces an acute symbol, then pressing e again locates that correctly above the e : café moving Move a document or any file or folder by dragging from one location to another If doing this between folders it is useful to have two windows open - one showing the file to be moved and the other the destination

4 Mousing Applications single click click and hold double click selecting To indicate which file, folder, application icon, link or other object you must click once on the object The object will change color to show it is selected To select the name of the object: press the Return key after the selection is made Hold the Command key to select more than one object at a time Hold the Shift key to select between two objects within a list dragging To move an object you must select it and keep the mouse pressed down Moving an object like this is called Dragging A double-click will usually instigate an action to take place : for a file or document it may open using its application Only movable objects usually require a double-click The Dock icons and webpage links only require one click to open A Mouse or TrackPad or Magic Pad or Track Ball : are all kinds of pointing devices They allow you to indicate to the imac where and what you are interacting with Mastering consistent and smooth use of a pointing device is vital right click A right click will bring up a Contextual menu : a pop-up menu with items and actions specific to the object selected scrolling Scrolling can be done by stroking a mouse that has a touch surface Older mouses use a scroll wheel on the mouse document icons folder icon application icons locating All Applications should be in the Applications folder. If downloaded they may download as a disk image installer - that is recognised by the download file ending in.dmg Once the disk image is opened the enclosed application should be dragged to the Applications folder to be copied there OR If an installer is present, the installer needs to be run to install the application and its associated files in the correct Audiophile.dmg locations Once finished you should eject the disk image by dragging it to the Trash. updating Most applications will need updating from time to time Software Update under the Apple menu handles this process for Apple applications Other applications mostly have their own updating systems which should not be ignored when updates become available Apple Support - Macintosh Basics opening Most Applications open with a single click - if in the Dock If opening directly you will need to double-click them A little light shows under all open applications in the Dock quitting Closing windows within an application is not the same as quitting it Even if all windows are closed it may still be open (running) Quit an application by using the Quit command under its menu in the Menu bar, or, hold down Command key and press Q Apple have an excellent web link providing free tuition on all aspects of using Macintosh a document on the Desktop being selected with one click Apple Support - ipad Basics Apple have an excellent web link providing free tuition on all aspects of using ipad
