3 Uummannaq Fjord Disko Bay The Uummannaq Fjord and Disko Bay area is located half way up the west coast of Greenland There is deep sea access for 9-12 months of the year Ilulissat The thriving town of Ilulissat in Disko Bay is one of Greenland s fastest growing centres

5 An area with a history of mining Mining has played an important role in the local economy of the Disko / Uummannaq area until very recent times. Qullissat coal mine, Disko Island closed 1972 Black Angel Pb-Zn mine - closed 1990, attempts are being made to reopen it

11 Charter flights Air Greenland has a large fleet of helicopters as well as extremely experienced sling pilots available for charter Air Greenland s fleet includes Eurocopter 350S, Bell 212 and Sikorsky S61 helicopters 2-3 helicopters permanently based at Ilulissat; 1 at Uummannaq A helicopter mechanic is permanently based at Ilulissat at a fully equipped repair workshop Additional spares can be flown in at 1-2 days notice

12 Airports Permanently staffed airports at Upernavik, Qaarsut, Ilulissat and Aasiaat. Facilities include helicopter hangers, aviation fuel on tap, workshops and regular flights to Kangerlussuaq/Nuuk. Qaarsut airport

16 Onward shipping - cargo Heavy goods can be shipped to favourable beaches / bays in the Disko / Uummannaq area and landed by barge or unloaded by helicopter. Vibroseis truck being loaded from a beach on Disko Island onto a barge. Semi-laden barge being towed by a fishing boat. This barge has a capacity of 70 tons and is permanently based in Ilulissat.

17 Onward shipping - passengers Lots of motorboats and small ships with experienced crew are available for hire in the many ports in the Disko / Uummannaq area. All coastal areas can be directly accessed with a motorboat/dinghy combination, providing a cheap and flexible alternative to helicopter transport.

18 Construction equipment A large construction company is based in Ilulissat with extensive experience of buildings, roads, harbours, mine engineering, etc. Other companies in Ilulissat have machines and equipment available for hire

19 Workshops and storage facilities Ilulissat has many workshops with skilled mechanics who are able to repair boat engines, ATVs, vehicles, snow scooters, etc. Large heated warehouses and containers can be rented for storage.

20 Energy Most small towns in Greenland are powered by diesel generators. Ilulissat and Oqaatsut are powered by a 65 GW subterranean hydropower station at Paakitsoq, 45 km north of Ilulissat. The Paakitsoq power station illustrates the potential for hydro-power to supply energy to a mine

21 Hospitals Greenland provides modern health facilities based on its Danish counterpart, linked with an air ambulance service. 191-bed referral hospital in Nuuk Medium-sized hospital in Ilulissat Small hospitals in Uummannaq and Upernavik Ilulissat hospital

22 Accommodation Four hotels are present in Ilulissat, including the 4-star Hotel Arctic with 5-star conference facilities. Other hotels are present in Aasiat and Qasigiannguit. Hotel Hvide Falk Hotel Arctic Full-board accommodation is also available at Qaarsut airport and at the tourist lodges at Ataa and Eqi.

23 Shops and facilities Most goods are available from the wide range of shops in Ilulissat. Other facilities include banks, a timber yard, fuel depot, cafés, restaurants & 2 large supermarkets. Ship s chandler at Iluissat harbour. Guns and ammunition for polar bear protection can be purchased here.
