(ESYD) he National Accreditation Body of Greece ISSUE 8 бюctober 2003 From the Editorial We are pleased to inform our readers of two recent events of great importance, concerning the status of ESYD and the development of accreditation in Greece. F i r s t l y, the Hellenic Accreditation Council that started operating in the Ministry of Development in 1995, has been transformed since May 2003 into a corporation. The reason was to safeguard its independence and to overcome any functional d i fficulties. The corporation will keep the same logo (ESYD) as before. It should be mentioned that accreditation activities continued smoothly during the transition period. Indeed, an improvement has been observed in all sectors, such as the training of assessors, the fields of accreditation and the issue of certificates, as shown in the graph. E q u a l l y, or maybe even more important, is the progress achieved in joining the EA M u l t i l a t e r a l Agreements on the mutual recognition of the equivalence of the certificates and reports issued by organizations accredited by EA M e m b e r s. The evaluation of ESYD by the appointed EA Team was successfully carried out last A u g u s t, and resulted in a positive recommendation for all seven fields of accreditation operated by ESYD. The final decision will be taken during the EA General A s s e m b l y, next November. N ew fields of accreditation p r ovided by ES Y D C. Kagarakis ESYD Chairman ESYD has recently expanded its schemes to cover several new areas of activity of the accredited bodies. These areas include the flexible scope and multisite accreditation of laboratories, the certification of the occupational health and safety management systems, the recurrent inspection of motor vehicles, and the inspection of vehicles for the carriage of dangerous goods. The first applications have been already submitted to E.SY.D. and some of them are actually in an advanced stage of a s s e s s m e n t.
