You must go to the local county Tax Collector s Office and take with you proof of Florida auto insurance, car title, and if the title is not a Florida title you must apply for a Florida title and have the car you are registering there for VIN number identification. Exact cost is determined by the weight of the vehicle (average total fee for title, registration, license plate and tag is up to $450). **Bring your checkbook with you (some Tax Collector s office doesn t accept Debit Card, no Credit Card accepted)** It is very important that you switch insurance from the state you are in to Florida insurance company (according to the date you arrive). License plates are renewed each year by mail or in person by means of an adhesive tag which updates your plate, and it occurs every year on the registered owner s birthday. A registration is evidence of having paid the registration tax and fees on a motor vehicle. It consists of a metal license plate, a serially numbered validation decal and a registration certificate. Why must I register my motor vehicle? In the State of Florida, a motor vehicle is required by law to be registered within ten days of the owner either becoming employed, placing children in public school, or establishing residency. Registering your motor vehicle goes hand in hand with the titling process. The only exception is if you continue your state residency by continuing to own your house in another state and your vehicles are registered in that state. Often the personal property tax charged by that state is tied to both your home and car ownership; the state of Florida recognizes this. Why do I change the title to change the name on my registration? Except for leased vehicles, the name on the registration and the certificate of title is one and the same on the motor vehicle data base. Therefore, one cannot be changed without the other.

2 What are the basic registration fees? The 12-month registration period begins the first day of the owner s birth month. Company owned vehicles use the month of June. Full amount is charged for the registration period regardless of when during the registration period the vehicle is registered. 2) Driver s License If you possess a valid out of state license, you only need a visual examination to obtain a Florida driver s license.
