2 Welcome! As the Campus Pastor at NCU, I want to extend a huge welcome to our NCU faith community. Faith is a journey of seeking, asking and discovering. This core value of dynamic and healthy faith development has been a pursuit at this university since its founding in I genuinely hope and pray that every student, staff and faculty member would experience vibrant and deepening faith while at NCU. We also believe that the local church is an invaluable part of this journey of spiritual growth. A word of caution: Chapel does not replace local church involvement. Therefore, we encourage each student to visit, participate and serve in a local church while they are growing and learning at NCU. A healthy church will add inspirational worship, multi-generational mentoring, and forming service opportunities to your faith journey. So go for it! Try out a number of local churches and see where you can both get encouraged and challenged to grow outside of NCU. Grace and Peace, Pastor Troy What to look for in a good church: Worship- Is the music and atmosphere inspiring, engaging, sacred and well done. Is the congregation involved and participating? Is the worship leader helpful, encouraging, and directing he attention of the congregation to God? Teaching- Should be Jesus centered, committed to the Bible and its truth, personally enriching, and real life applicable. You should be challenged to love people and live more fully for God and not just be entertained. Community- Look for a welcoming and warm group of people that feels as though they genuinely like each other and serve together. Try to find people to connect with easily and a place that offers events other than just Sundays (i.e. small groups). Possibly a college-age group if you so desire. Service- Opportunities to get involved serving at the church and in the local community. Look for serving opportunities focused on individual gifts rather than just filling a hole for a volunteer. If you don t see a first place to serve, they ask are they open to new ministry ideas?
3 Heritage Churches Who we are: The heritage of NCU includes three primary church families historically referred to as the Stone-Campbell Movement or Restoration Movement. We gained momentum in the U.S. in the early 1800 s as a unity movement. Early leaders like Barton W. Stone and Alexander Campbell (their busts are located in the lobby of Chapel) emphasized the core beliefs and tenants that most Christians hold in common - A strong commitment to Biblical truth; a deep focus on Jesus and sharing his love; and a renewed call to unity for all Christ followers. A couple of key phrases accompanied this young movement: In essentials, unity; in non-essentials, liberty (freedom); in all things charity (love). No creed but Christ. We are not the only Christians, but we are Christians only.
