2 ABOUT GWC GOLDEN WEST COLLEGE Oceans of Opportunity Located in Huntington Beach, also known as Surf City, Golden West College is regarded as one of the most beautiful campuses in Southern California. The 122-acre campus is located just a few minutes from the beach. Golden West is a mid-sized community college offering Associate Degrees, career & technical education, and a strong university transfer program. 3 How do I Qualify for Admission? Anyone 18 years of age or older who can profit from instruction qualifies for admission. If under age 18, you will qualify for admission if you: Graduated from high school. OR Passed the California High School Certificate of Proficiency Test or the equivalent. OR Completed the 11th grade and received permission from your high school principal and parent to attend. (Detailed K-12 student admissions information is available on our website). What is the Cost? California Residents: $46* per unit Non-residents: $214* per unit Plus: Health Service Fee -$19 College Service Charge -$17 Parking Permit -$30 per semester (optional) Course materials fees (varies by course). * Cost at the time of printing this brochure. 4 ASSOCIATE DEGREE DEGREES Associate Degrees Golden West College offers students several ways to earn a degree: the Associate in Arts Degree (AA); the Associate in Arts for Transfer (AA-T); and the Associate in Science for Transfer (AS-T). The AA-T and AS-T degrees are intended for students who plan to complete a bachelor s degree in a similar major at a California State University (CSU) campus. Students completing these degrees are guaranteed admission to the CSU system, but not to a particular campus or major. Degrees with a Two Year Completion Guarantee Golden West College currently offers many Associate Degree for Transfer majors that have been pre-scheduled, making it possible to complete in two years GUARANTEED! Students enrolled in these cohorts will receive priority registration every semester to assure available seating in required courses. Meet with a GWC counselor to enroll in one of these majors. 6 TRANSFER Start Your Bachelor s Degree at GWC and transfer to a university. A good GPA from Golden West College is a great credential for university acceptance. The best indicator of college ability is a successful college record. Transfer Courses Courses identified in the GWC college catalog as transferable to the University of California (UC) are acceptable at all UC campuses, at least for elective credit. Likewise courses identified as transferable to the California State University (CSU) are acceptable at all CSU campuses, at least for elective credit. Transfer Majors You can start your Bachelor s Degree at GWC for most majors. To see majors available at the different UCs or CSUs, use the Explore Majors feature on the ASSIST website ( Transfer Services GWC s Transfer Center provides services to help you successfully transfer to a four-year college or university by offering: Transfer Fairs Visits by University Reps University Tours Counseling Classes Workshops & Seminars Catalog & Reference Library Computers for Online Research Fast Facts 55% of CSU graduates and 28% of UC graduates started at a community college and upon transferring, obtained GPAs equal to, or better than, native UC or CSU students. Transfer students from community colleges to the University of California account for 48% of UC s bachelor s degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). 7 Transfer Guarantees UC Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) Seven UC campuses offer guaranteed admission to California community college students who meet specific requirements: UC Davis; UC Irvine; UC Merced; UC Riverside; UC San Diego; UC Santa Barbara; UC Santa Cruz. By participating in a TAG program, students receive early review of their academic records, early admission notification, and specific guidance about major preparation and general education coursework. Eligibility requirements, limitations and the application process are different for each school. Please refer to their website for current information: CSU Admission Guarantee Admission to a CSU campus is guaranteed for any community college student who completes an Associate Degree for Transfer. Students completing these degrees are guaranteed admission to the CSU system but not to a particular campus or major. Consult with a GWC counselor for more information and transfer requirements. General Education Certification General Education requirements for graduation from California State University (CSU) and University of California (UC) schools may be taken at Golden West College and certified for university recognition. Certificate of Achievement for CSU GE-Breadth This certificate is designed specifically for students intending to transfer to the CSU System. Students who complete this course work will complete the maximum lower-division general education units allowed by the 23 CSU campuses. Certificate of Achievement for IGETC (UC/CSU) The Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) certificate is designed for students who intend to transfer to a UC or CSU, or who are unsure if they will transfer to a UC or CSU campus. Students who complete this certificate will complete the lower division general education units required by the UC and CSU. Students transferring to CSU must complete a minimum of nine additional upper division general education units after transfer. Articulation Some university majors require or recommend introductory or prerequisite courses. These major requirements are described in CSU and UC campus catalogs. Most campuses have articulation agreements with community colleges specifying coursework taken at California Community Colleges that can satisfy lower division requirements for the major. Articulation agreements for specific majors are available at It is important to meet with a counselor regularly to plan for a successful transfer.

8 CAREER PROGRAMS CTE Career & Technical Education Golden West College offers Career & Technical Education (CTE) designed to provide educational, vocational, and technical training that will lead to specialized employment, career advancement, or transfer to a university. Our career programs are taught by highly qualified instructors who are working or experienced in the field they teach. In addition, the programs have been designed with the advice and counseling from industry advisory committee members who volunteer their time to keep our programs current with industry trends and technological advancements. Certificate of Specialization This certificate focuses on the student gaining competency in a skill so that he/she can quickly move into the workplace. There is emphasis on updated or newly emerging technologies and the coursework is less than 18 units. This certificate does not require state approval, and it does not appear on your transcripts. 9 Certificate of Achievement The Certificate of Achievement goes through the State approval process and requires a minimum of 12 units of coursework in a particular academic or occupational area. This certificate appears on your transcripts and students are recognized at the graduation ceremony. 10 STUDENT LIFE CONNECT! Student Activities There are many ways you can get involved, connect with friends, and enjoy campus life at Golden West... Join a club. It s a great way to meet people with similar interests and enrich your academic experience. Participate in events throughout the year Homecoming, BBQs, live entertainment, Diversity Week, Intercultural Program events, community service projects, service-learning opportunities, and leadership conferences just to name a few. Become a Leader. Run for Student Council, join the Student Senate, or be the student voice on a campus-wide committee. Whatever your interests, there is a job for you in student government. As a representative of the students, members put their leadership skills to work. Hang out with friends in the Student Center between classes. Play video games or shoot pool in the game room, watch the big-screen TV in the lounge area, or get a bite to eat in the Cove Café. Athletics The excellence of Golden West College s athletic program rivals the school s academic reputation as one of the finest all-around programs in the State of California. Since 1966, GWC Rustlers have captured more State Championships than any other California Community College. Fifteen sports men s and women s cross country, soccer, swimming & diving, track & field, volleyball, and water polo; men s baseball, and football; and women s softball are all sponsored by the college. 12 ENROLL Enrollment Steps Step 1 - APPLY FOR ADMISSION Apply online at An application confirmation will be sent to the address you provided on your application. This will include your Student ID number, Student address, and your MyGWC login information. Step 2 - ORIENTATION Complete an online orientation session through the link on MyGWC. The orientation is designed to acquaint you with the many programs and support services available at the college and to assist you in selecting your first semester classes. Orientation must be completed at least 24 hours before your registration time. Step 3 - ASSESSMENT You will need to take placement tests in English, reading and mathematics to determine the right courses for you in these areas. It is not a pass or fail test. Step 4 - PLANNING Attend a Counseling (Planning) Workshop to develop your Student Education Plan (SEP). Step 5 - REGISTER FOR CLASSES Register online at on or after your registration appointment date and time via your MyGWC portal page.
