Dr. Patrick Lawrence is Assistant Professor of Trombone, Euphonium and Tuba at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. He completed the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Arizona State University where his dissertation Solo Literature for Trombone and Organ, an annotated bibliography, was recognized as an important musical reference for trombonists and educators. Dr. Lawrence also holds a Master of Music Degree from the University of Arizona, and Bachelor degrees in Secondary Music Education and Performance from The University of Mary. An active performer, he is the conductor of the Wausau Symphonic Band, and principal trombonist with the Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra. A strong advocate for collaboration with organists, he commissioned and premiered Resolution for Trombone and Organ in 2009 and performed at the American Guild of Organists-South West Convention. He served as 2nd trombonist with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra and has given recitals in the United States and Canada. As a sideman, Patrick has shared the stage with musical greats Yo-Yo Ma, Louis Bellson, The Temptations, Doc Severinsen, Wayne Newton, Jerry Lewis, Linda Ronstadt, the Don Rickles Orchestra, Buddy Morrow and the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, and the Artie Shaw Big Band. Dr. Lawrence was the 2013 recipient of the University of Wisconsin- Stevens Point excellence in teaching award. He is a passionate educator, working with elementary through college-age students. He taught middle school band and orchestra in Arizona where his student groups received superior and excellent ratings at local, state and national music festivals. Dr. Lawrence has articles and music reviews published in the International Trombone Association Journal, the International Tuba and Euphonium Association Journal, and Wisconsin School Musician.

White Eagle Overture Steve Hodges Guest Conductor: Dr. Patrick Lawrence With a dramatic introduction and a beautiful "Andante" section, this overture presents an excellent opportunity for the band students to demonstrate contrasting styles. 8th Grade Concert Band National Emblem E. E. Bagley arr. Andrew Balent Edwin Eugene Bagley was born in 1857 in Craftsberg, Vermont. He began his musical career at age nine as a singer and began playing cornet at age 14. He composed over twenty marches and several other works. This famous march has been played for many generations and will be performed for many generations to come. Highland Echoes Larry Deahn Guest Conductor: Dr. Patrick Lawrence This piece is based on 18th Century Scottish folk songs. It opens with a very old bagpipe song entitled Blythe, Blythe, and Merry Was She. It quickly moves into the Highland Dance followed with The Lass of Gowrie. The piece ends with the two very familiar Scottish melodies Scotland the Brave and Auld Lang Syne.

Victor Lopez High School Concert Band Malagueña Ernesto Lecuona arr. John Cacavas Soloists: Ivy Becker - Clarinet Nolan Morris - Trumpet Scott Lucey - Baritone Malagueña is a folk tune that is native to Málaga and is associated with a spanish dance that is similar to a fandango. In addition to his prowess as a composer, Lecuona was also an accomplished and popular concert pianist, and it was while on a performance tour of Spain in 1924 that he became enamored of that country s music and culture, particularly in the various cities and villages of Andalucia where Málaga is located. So on returning to Cuba he composed his most famous large-scale piano work, his Andalucia Suite. The best known among them is the the final Malagueña. Among The Clouds Brian Balmages Guest Conductor: Dr. Patrick Lawrence More than a third of the dreaming population reports having had at least one flying dream. While anyone can have them, they tend to occur in people who are especially creative and imaginative. Of particular interest are lucid dreamers, those who are actually aware they are dreaming and can then control their actions while inside the dream. Among the Clouds takes us into the minds of these lucid dreamers as they drift off to sleep and wake up in a dream where they own the skies.

6 March is Music In Our Schools Month Music Is The Difference To study music is to study the learning process. Music is an academic subject that involves learning in the major domains: cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), affective (attitudes and feelings), and kinesthetic (the senses). Music comprises its own complex body of knowledge, requires the development of motor coordination, shapes attitudes and feelings, and requires learning via the senses. Through music, people engage in the entire learning process and develop keener understandings and insights as to how knowledge, skills, attitudes, feelings, and the senses all interrelate. To study music is to study art. Music gives us a means to develop aesthetic sensitivity. The study of music teaches people to appreciate quality - those products of human creativity that represent the highest order of thinking, feeling, and technical achievement. When one is able to understand and express the great works of art, one is more able to experience the richness and beauty of life. Music is a means of understanding and relating to the noblest desires and aspirations of people throughout the ages. Music plays an important role in everybody s life. Warriors have gone to battle to it. Athletes warm up and train to it. Joggers jog to it. Bikers bike to it. Writers write to it and thinkers think to it. It heightens every experience. Most importantly, music is a healer. It touches where nothing else can reach to nourish weakening spirits and bolster broken hearts. Music is NOT an extra.
