2 The Faculty The Faculty of Humanities is the largest faculty at the Tshwane University of Technology and of its kind in the country. It is situated in Soshanguve, 30 km north of Pretoria. Most of its programmes are offered through contact education. The faculty has approximately distance education students. Its programmes are offered at the Soshanguve North, Soshanguve South, emalahleni, Nelspruit and Polokwane campuses, and at service points in Durban and Cape Town. Tshwane University of Technology

3 Departments Applied Languages TUT is the only institution in South Africa that offers language practice at a postgraduate level. This department is one of only two in South Africa that offer a nationally accredited qualification in broadcasting. Educational Studies This department has the largest number of postgraduate students in the faculty. It offers ACE, BEd, BEd (Hons), PGCE, MEd and DEd programmes. It was recently awarded the tender for teacher training in the ACE (Advanced Certificate in Education) programme in Mpumalanga. Journalism The Department of Journalism is one of the leading departments of journalism in South Africa. Law This is the only department in South Africa that offers a three-year qualification in paralegal studies. It participates in the annual Moot Court contest, which is an international competition open to all universities in Africa. Mathematics, Science and Technology Education This department offers specialisation programmes in the fields of Mathematics, Science and Technology Education. In 2009, it was awarded the OR Tambo Chair in Mathematics and Science Education. Public Management This department offers programmes in public management and local government management. It offers a three-year qualification in local government, with the possibility of progression to a master s degree and doctorate. In 2007, the ilgm (Institute of Local Government Management of Southern Africa) presented the department with an Excellence Award for contributing to the development of the local government domain and related matters. Public Relations and Business Communication This department is known for its unique career-focused qualifications in the field of communication. Safety and Security Management This department offers programmes in policing, correctional services and traffic-related fields to fulltime and part-time students through contact and distance education. It is one of only two institutions in South Africa offering the above programmes at undergraduate level. Many of the successful students of the department are high-ranking police officials. 4 Executive Dean of the Faculty Dr Stanley Mukhola obtained his Doctorate in Environmental Education from the University of Johannesburg. His areas of expertise include Environmental education; Food, Water and Sanitation. Dr Mukhola is passionate about the transformation of higher education in South Africa and is committed to quality education. He was involved in all the Higher Education Quality Committee (HEQC) audits at this University and he has chaired audit committees of other universities. Under his leadership, the first libraries were opened as community projects in rural Limpopo and in KwaZulu-Natal. A word from the Dean I am extremely excited about 2012 and I hope you are too. 5 Associate Dean of the Faculty Prof Elsabe Coetzee is the Associate Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and her office is situated on the Soshanguve North campus. This campus accommodates four of the eight departments of the Faculty. Apart from assisting the Executive Dean in all the management activities of the Faculty, Prof Coetzee is also the Faculty coordinator with regard to the planning and execution of the Integrated and Operational Plan (building and renovation projects) on the Soshanguve campuses. A major electricity upgrading project on the Soshanguve North campus was completed in Teaching venues on both Soshanguve campuses are in the process of renovation and are being equipped with the most modern teaching and learning technology. Strict safety and security measures are currently implemented on these campuses. In the near future, the main entrances and landscaping areas will be attended to. Prof Coetzee s ideal is to cooperate in all processes with the aim of making the TUT campuses the centre of attraction in our environment. Soshanguve residents and students should always be proud of TUT, know what the university means to them and how they can be involved in the development that TUT brings to them. Prof Coetzee is also involved in research and is focusing on topics like community engagement, postgraduate studies and open and distance learning. The Faculty of Humanities has developed impressively in many areas over the past few years and she is proud to be part of the management team of the Faculty of Humanities and TUT. I am honoured to serve TUT, the students and the community during these interesting times. 6 Department of Applied Languages Applied Languages Language is an instrument without which no human being, organisation or community can function effectively. By using words: people interact; products and services are marketed; companies are managed; negotiations are conducted and conflicts defused; knowledge is acquired and shared; realities are created and changed; and people empower themselves. A language practitioner is assured of ample challenging employment opportunities and an exciting work environment! The Department is probably one of the largest language departments in South Africa, offering service subjects to more than 45 National Diploma and Bachelor of Technology programmes on six geographically dispersed campuses (Pretoria, Soshanguve, Ga-Rankuwa, emalahleni, Polokwane, Nelspruit). QUALIFICATIONS, ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS AND COURSE STRUCTURE Language Practice The minimum requirement for admission to the three-year National Diploma: Language Practice, is a Senior Certificate or equivalent qualification, with at least D symbols or level 4 score for the major languages offered in the programme. Students with an N Dip: Language Practice, a BA (Languages) or an equivalent qualification may apply for admission to the Bachelor of Technology degree programme in Language Practice (a fourth year of study, equivalent to the traditional honours degree). Students are selected with care and only a limited number are accepted for this prestigious programme. The practical course content, firmly based on scientific theory, and the entrepreneurial approach enable competent graduates to present themselves to prospective employers with confidence, and also to generate employment. Prof Mashudu C Mashige Department of Applied Languages For admission to the Master of Technology programme, a B Tech: Language Practice, BA (Hons) (Languages) or an equivalent four-year qualification is required. Candidates for the M Tech: 4 Department of Applied Languages

7 Language Practice have a choice between a research project and a dissertation on an approved topic from the language practice field or a study course in Computer-Assisted Language Teaching (CALT). The Doctorate in Language Practice (D Tech) comprises a research project and a thesis on an approved, industry-related theme. The Department of Applied Languages is the only department in South Africa to offer master s and doctoral programmes in Language Practice and CALT. VERSATILE Broadcasting A one-year National Certificate programme in Versatile Broadcasting is currently offered at the Soshanguve South Campus, with a view to extending it to a full National Diploma programme in the near future. Admission requirements A Senior Certificate or an equivalent qualification. English or Afrikaans with a D symbol (second language) or a D symbol (first language) or level 4 score. In exceptional cases, the head of the department may permit applicants who do not comply with all the language entry requirements to take part in the selection process. All prospective students undergo a selection process. Successful candidates will then be invited for a voice test. Oral and written language proficiency is extremely important and special emphasis will be placed on these skills during selection. The programme provides hands-on training on modern equipment in a range of broadcasting skills. The facilitators are all experienced professionals specially selected to offer the best possible training. This department is one of only two in South Africa offering a nationally accredited qualification in this field, and was the first to do so. Please note: Acceptance and Enrollment of one programme i.e. Language Practice does not mean automatic qualification and acceptance for the other programme i.e. Versatile Broadcasting and vice-versa. Postgraduate studies can currently be pursued at this campus only. The National Certificate in Versatile Broadcasting is currently offered at the Soshanguve Campus only. 28 Department of Journalism Journalism The Department of Journalism is one of the leading departments of journalism in South Africa. It offers a National Diploma after three years of study, a Bachelor s Degree in Journalism after four years, as well as a Master s and a Doctorate in this discipline. The study entails two years of full-time studies on campus. Experiential learning is done in the third year at a newspaper, magazine or radio or television station. Majors like Print or Broadcast, Politics and Feature Writing will be the subjects followed in this year. In the fourth year, when they are registered for the B Tech degree, most students will be working as junior journalists and attend classes on certain Saturday mornings. Successful students are employed countrywide and even internationally as journalists in all media-related careers. Typical positions will be at newspapers, magazines, radio (SABC and community stations), TV and online publications. Admission requirements FOR STUDENTS WHO OBTAINED A SENIOR CERTIFICATE BE- FORE 2008: A Senior Certificate or an equivalent qualification. English or Afrikaans with a C symbol (second language) or a D symbol (first language) at the Higher Grade. The head of department may, in exceptional cases, permit applicants who do not comply with all the language entry requirements to take part in the selection process. FOR STUDENTS WHO OBTAINED A NATIONAL SENIOR CERTIFI- CATE SINCE 2008: A National Senior Certificate or an equivalent qualification, with a minimum pass rate of 4 for English (first or second language) and with a total Admission Points Score (APS) of 22 or more (six subjects, excluding Life Orientation). Preference will be given to candidates with a 5 or more for English. Candidates receive an additional credit point for a pass in any of the recommended subjects listed below. General knowledge and language proficiency are extremely important in journalism and special emphasis will therefore be placed on these aspects during selection. Prospective students are advised to prepare themselves accordingly by, for example, reading books on journalism and the political system in South Africa, reading newspapers regularly, and consulting professional journalists on the nature and requirements of the profession. A student may do the Work Integrated Learning with an accredited employer only, and although the Tshwane University of Technology undertakes to assist students with placement for Work Integrated Learning, it is the student s own responsibility to find an accredited employer for a period of at least six months. A student himself or herself must negotiate with the employer regarding conditions of service and other applicable conditions. An agreement for Work Integrated Learning constitutes a separate agreement between an employer and a student.
